Building a Brighter Future Together: The Power of Inclusivity in Our Chamber
At the heart of our chamber’s mission is a commitment to fostering an environment where every member has the opportunity to thrive. Inclusivity is not just a buzzword; it’s a cornerstone of our success and a vital ingredient for collective growth.
In a diverse and rapidly evolving business landscape, embracing inclusivity means acknowledging and celebrating the unique perspectives and strengths that each member brings to the table. When we create pathways for success that accommodate diverse needs and viewpoints, we not only enrich our community but also drive innovation and resilience.
Inclusivity starts with ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. By actively seeking input from a broad spectrum of members and addressing varied needs, we build a more dynamic and responsive chamber. This approach fosters an environment where creative solutions flourish, and everyone feels empowered to contribute their best.
Moreover, an inclusive chamber is better equipped to tackle challenges and seize opportunities. By recognizing and supporting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our members, we position ourselves to address a wider range of issues and capitalize on diverse perspectives, leading to more effective and innovative outcomes.
Our commitment to inclusivity also extends to providing resources and support that cater to all stages of business development. Whether you’re a startup or a seasoned enterprise, our goal is to ensure that every member has access to the tools and networks necessary for success.
In embracing inclusivity, we’re not just building a stronger chamber; we’re paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous community. Let’s continue to work together to create an environment where every member can thrive and contribute to our collective success.

On August 21, 2024, our Membership Luncheon at the Kelso Elks Lodge was nothing short of inspiring. Mary Cranston captivated attendees with her powerful insights and dynamic approach, urging everyone to embrace the challenge of “swimming in the deep water.” With a background as a collegiate athlete and the daughter of a Hall of Fame coach, Mary’s expertise in sports psychology, mental health, and parenting offered a unique and motivational perspective. Her authentic coaching style encourages individuals to reject external approval and focus on living purposefully and intentionally. We left the event energized and committed to pursuing work – life – harmony in the deep water.

Lower Columbia College
Lucas Myers LCC Faculty President
New Year, New Faces: Future is Bright at LCC!
As September awaits around the corner, Lower Columbia College (LCC) is bustling with energy for the start of the Fall Quarter. New students, faculty, and leadership have added to the excitement for this upcoming academic year. It is an exhilarating time to be a part of LCC and this great community. A changing culture at LCC and growth among programs and buildings have made for a bright future.
With the new leadership at various levels, we have continued to work on improving and modeling shared governance on our campus. Shared governance is a process of governing in higher education, as well as in other industries. This form of governance involves including key stakeholders in policy development and strategic decision-making. As the LCC Faculty President, I am lucky to be involved in this process as faculty and administration work through improving and continuing our shared governance model to make LCC a great place to work, learn, and grow. Through this process, we can make improvements to our campus environment and policies with direct information from necessary stakeholders. This process involves regular meetings between faculty and administrators at various levels to discuss current issues and plan for future changes to our campus and education. We are in a mode of being proactive rather than reactive as we push forward into new and uncertain times in education. With our new president, Dr. Matt Seimears, and our vice presidents, we have been able to move our shared governance model into a new stage of collaboration that has allowed for necessary changes and improvements to our everyday working models, leading to a changing culture on our campus with improved trust and workplace enjoyment. Shared governance is a great model for higher education, but it takes faith, accountability, and humility to operate effectively. Here at LCC, we have continued to work toward modeling those three behaviors regularly among our governing bodies.
In other news at Lower Columbia College, we have recently made some exciting new hires that will continue to help grow the culture at LCC. In athletics, we are thrilled to welcome Troy Shorey, our new Head Women’s Volleyball Coach. Troy comes to LCC from Crescent Valley High School in Oregon, where he won multiple state championships as their Head Coach. His impressive track record and dedication have already made a significant impact at LCC. Troy will not only be leading our volleyball team but will also serve as the advisor for our Career and College Preparation (CCP) students, a
brand-new position created through our shared governance process to better serve our CCP students in on-boarding and transitioning from CCP courses to college level certificates and programs.
We also recently hired a large batch of new faculty at Lower Columbia College who will begin their tenure track positions this fall. These are highly competitive positions for applicants, and we are excited about the new faculty entering our community. One area in particular we are most excited about is our full-time engineering position. We would like to see an engineering program grow and develop further as we have a tenure-track faculty member overseeing the program. This academic program has always sent great engineering students to WSU in Vancouver, but we hope to bolster and grow this program further with tenure-track faculty members nurturing the program. In the past, this program had been mainly supported by adjunct faculty members who often spread across multiple departments, campuses, and sometimes states. With a newly hired tenure-track engineering faculty member, Firarol Fekadu, we look forward to seeing an engineering program that grows and develops into a top-notch program in our region and state.
Lower Columbia College continues to be a beacon in our community. Under our new leadership and a growing model of shared governance, we are committed to making great strides in improving the quality of education in our community. Our goal is to have a lasting impact on the long-term economic viability of our community members and the greater southwest Washington region. It is through our unwavering commitment to shared governance that we will continue to move LCC forward as a leader in our community and the northwest.

balanced and inspired both personally and professionally.

August Success: Sold-Out Events and Upcoming Annual Clean-Up
The Kelso Business and Community Association (KBCA) marked a momentous August, highlighted by the resounding success of two signature events that showcased the vibrancy and entrepreneurial spirit of the Kelso community.
On August 8th, the KBCA hosted the much-anticipated Kelso Bites, Brews, and Brothels Progressive Dinner and Historical Walking Tour. The sold-out event, was a unique fusion of local culinary delights, craft brews, and rich historical storytelling. Participants enjoyed a choose-your-own-adventure-style experience, wandering through the historic streets of Kelso while indulging in delicious offerings from local eateries. The evening was not only a gastronomic success but also served as a journey through the city’s storied past, with engaging narratives that brought to life Kelso’s heritage. The event’s overwhelming popularity underscores the community’s enthusiasm for innovative and engaging local experiences. Stay tuned for more events with new historical twists in 2025!
Following the success of the Bites and Brews event, the KBCA continued its winning streak with the Kelso Kids Bridge Market on August 9th. This inaugural event was a heartwarming display of youthful enterprise, featuring 40 young entrepreneurs eager to showcase their businesses. The market provided these budding business owners with an invaluable platform to present their
products and services to the community. From handcrafted goods to creative services, the diversity and quality of offerings at the Kelso Kids Bridge Market impressed all in attendance. The event not only fostered a sense of achievement among the young participants but also reinforced the City of Kelso, Cowlitz Economic Development Council, and KBCA’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of business leaders.
Looking ahead, the KBCA is gearing up for its annual Kelso CleanUp before the Highlander Festival event on September 12th, just before the Highlander Festival. Each year, the community comes together to ensure the parade route is spotless for the festivities. Volunteers will gather from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at the Kelso Longview Elks parking lot before setting out to clean up the designated area. This tradition highlights the pride residents take in their city and their collective effort to present Kelso at its best during one of the year’s most celebrated events.
To learn more about these events and stay updated on future initiatives, visit our website at http://www.letsgokelso.com or follow us on Facebook @letsgokelso. The KBCA continues to create vibrant, community-centered experiences that enhance the social and economic vitality of Kelso, and we invite everyone to be a part of this exciting journey.
