PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Draftsperson | Architectural Nexus Summer 2011 Logan, UT bpetroff@archnexus.com – Bob Petroff

ABOUT ME Former Male-identified Co-chair: UI Gay-Straight Alliance (Spring 2011 - Fall 2011) BSA Eagle Scout UI Ballroom Dance Team Member (2009-2012) Interests: Sustainable Urbanism, Social Justice, Political Science, Art, History

I am an interdisciplinary designer. I found the desire to to look outside an insular world of Architecture after entering college and involving myself in the University of Idaho’s Gay Straight Alliance. There I was made aware of not only the challenges of the LGBTQIA community, but minorities everywhere. This experience turned me on to a wider world of concerns, and led me to take up Political Science as a minor. But as I pursued Architecture and Political Science concurrently, I began to consider how these seemingly unconnected areas might have a confluence, Today I am following this question, looking how policy and issues of social justice manifest latently within the holistic built environment. It has led me to not only find fascination with buildings, but the issues of environmental stainability, social stainability, urbanism, and the implementation of our knowledge as a field. I seek to further my experience in the professional realm to gain further insights into these 2 musings, and to challenge my own creativity, communication, and competitiveness for the years ahead.

Arch 453 | Fall 2012 | Service learning project | Clients: McIntosh Farms, Nez Perce County, Idaho The winery is intended to be a simple and functional space primarily, while incorporating an agricultural/industrial aesthetic with a touch modern elegance. A strong integration with the surrounding farmland dictated many design choices. The design engages visitors in the experience of wine making and wine tasting.

STRATIFY GONANO TECHNOLOGIES, INC.

Arch 453 | Fall 2012 | Service learning project | Clients: GoNano Technologies, INC., Port of Clarkston, WA Stratify was designed with the belief that high technology could be mixed with ancient wisdom in a meaningful way, and that this could be communicated through the medium of rammed earth, which like the earth itself is deposited in sentiments. This reflects what this facility is intended for: A combination of high tech and age old that provides a place for GoNano (makers of silicon nanosprings) to grow and succeed for generations to come, each generation leaving their mark like strata in the earth. Arch 454 | Summer 2012 | UI Rome Program

28

The summer of 2012 I had the privilege of studying Architecture and Urbanism in Rome, Italy for 2 months. Piazza Sant’ Edgidio Re-Sett was a culmination of this study. Re-Sett seeks to activate Piazza Sant’ Edgidio by adding shade, water, and seating to a piazza primarily used as a pedestrian conduit. The inspiration for the project is the boglum sett (cobblestone) paving pattern, enlarged, abstracted, and elevated. The water seeks to create a dialogue with the trees in the piazza (a rarity in Rome), and the tensile canvas awning adds a layer of building technology history to Rome.

STATION 5 IDAHO CONCRETE MASONRY ASSOCIATION COMPETITION

Arch 354 | Spring 2012 | Boise, Idaho

32

Station 5 is an exercise in the reinvention of what a fire station is, and what it can be. This project attempts to break out of the associated symbols of a fire station to better serve firefighters in their mission of service to the public. This project also seeks to mediate the relationship between the living/leisure spaces of the firehouse program, and the industrial/work spaces through contrast of materials and architectural language, while attempting to let the relationship be symbiotic and without dissonance.

Arch 354 | Spring 2012 The Magic Theater is a place within Hermann Hesse’s Counter culture classic, Steppenwolf. In this project my studio was tasked to imagine the magic theater in the context of post apocalyptic Stugart, Germany in a way that suspended the limits of today, and entered into pure creation. This project includes four theaters of different modes: Baroque, Elizabethan, Greek, & Blackbox (modern).

Arch 353 | Fall 2011 Designed to be a center for a sustainable and diverse community, Courtyard + Rowhouse looks to row house and courtyard dwellings to enhance the lives of not only residents, but the neighborhood at large. This is accomplished by not only being inwardly focused, but street focused through windows (Jane Jacobs “Eyes on the Street), stoops, and by adding a grocery store which further serves to mix primary uses and mitigate the Urban Food Desert.
