COLOURING WITH CAUTION: THE TRAP OF “STANDARD” RESULTS

COLOURING WITH CAUTION: THE TRAP OF “STANDARD” RESULTS

What we call today hair colouring is but an evolved form of a practice that has existed since time immemorial and in many different places bound to each other by common purposes: distinguishing themselves from other tribes, sending out a message, and discovering the pleasure of taking care of oneself and pleasing others.

Still today, lots of women all over the world feel the need to colour their hair. Most women believe hair colouring is a “great ally for their beauty” and the fact that hair colouring comes in second in market share worldwide and first in Europe shows just how popular and successful this service is among women1

However, there are multiple reasons why women make this choice and these vary depending on age and the attitude and overall image they want for themselves.

In addition to the widespread need to cover the much hated grey/white hair, women also want to express their own personality, enhance their features, change, improve their self-image, or simply play with their look and experiment with their aesthetic identity.

Despite the wide-ranging reasons that lead women from all over the world to colour their hair, the data from manufacturers report a mind-boggling statistic:

1 Source: Kline – World market, year 2021

4

intermediate shades (from 4 to 7) belonging to the natural tonal family are the most widely sold, followed by the ash and gold families. In other words, it seems we are heading towards a standardization of hair colour results of huge proportions.

In fact, the importance hair plays in building our self-image is also a source of fear and insecurities. These profoundly inhibit the product offering and the decision to change, all the more so when it comes to such a delicate aspect as hair colour.

There are various factors that make the “wrong colour” idea scary:

• Hair damage

• Inability to fix the result

• Inability to predict the result

• Misunderstanding between hairdresser and client

Indeed, when hairdresser and client suspect they have different views on the final result, they “rescale” the colour change project and go for safer choices to close the gap between their expectations.

This is how professionals and consumers way too often end up in a shared and limiting comfort zone and both miss an opportunity as a result.

In fact, every time the client settles for the “usual”, they give up all those little changes that would satisfy the specific reason that led them to colour their hair in the first place and their desire to be unique. The hairdresser, instead, gives up the consulting skills that set him or her apart as a hair colour expert

9

EXCLUSIVE SHIELD TECHNOLOGY TO ENSURE PERFECT RESULTS

The innovative Shield technology acts by way of special shielding intermediates contained in the colour cream. These prevent oxidative intermediates from oxidising prematurely

Oxidative intermediates are tiny molecules that react with the cream developer first and then with each other to develop into bigger structures, that is, the actual pigment which becomes trapped inside the hair. Because the special shielding intermediates in the formulation are the first to react with the developer, they protect the other oxidative intermediates from premature oxidation during product mixing and application, allowing them to penetrate deeper inside the hair fibre

Hypothetical scale representation of colour intermediates and their size before and after oxidation

Moreover, these tiny oxidative intermediates only need a balanced alkalising action to penetrate into the hair fibre This translates into minimal cuticle swelling and sensitisation of the hair.

A more compact and pigment-rich hair fibre will always tend to express more beautiful and vibrant tones and maintain the colour shiny and intact

10

COCONUT OIL FOR PLEASANT FLUIDITY AND MAXIMUM COVERAGE

Coconut oil is a key ingredient that gives Cramer Color System some of its more peculiar characteristics.

The coconut oil in the colour cream, due to its low-melting-point properties, acts as an additional support to Shield technology. It, in fact, enables quick mixing with the developer, almost immediately giving a fluid and smooth blend that goes on easily and evenly. This very unique texture also provides the needed grip and homogeneity to produce excellent coverage

Easy and smooth application

Maximum coverage

Nourishes hair and highlights the colour

Additionally, it is rich in lauric acid, a triglyceride that is highly similar to the hair’s protein structure. For this reason, it penetrates deep inside the cuticle, preventing damage and thus lending a richer, more vibrant and lasting colour result plus a protected hair fibre.

VELIAN COMPLEX: A TOUCH OF PROTECTION EVEN FOR THE SCALP

In 2006, in the hills of Umbria – not far from our plant – we converted 20 hectares of land to organic farming.

This is how we started a long and intense period of experimentation with the plants in our “open-air laboratory”, a research activity that still goes on today and has led us to achieve unprecedented results for cosmetics. After a long period of studies, we selected four plants for their emollient and soothing properties. These plants, native to the area, hardy and resistant, do not need a lot of water and are grown in accordance with organic farming techniques in our Kemon Open Lab.

Velian Complex is the result of a combination of:

• Mullein (Verbascum densiflorum): with soothing powers.

• Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum): with calming and refreshing powers.

• Flax (Linum usitatissimum): with protective and emollient powers.

• Dyer’s Chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria): with antioxidant powers.

The result is a patented blend of plant extracts, the fruit of extensive scientific research conducted by Kemon in collaboration with Vivacell Biotechnology (Denzlingen, Germany) and the University of Ferrara.

The new Cramer Color System has been enriched with this very important ingredient to boost the protective action on the scalp throughout the entire colouring process.

The patent

Scientific studies have demonstrated that “specific blends of extracts of mullein, helichrysum, flax and dyer’s chamomile, produced using plants grown in accordance with organic farming techniques in our Kemon Open Lab, possess noteworthy anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant characteristics”, and that the patented Velian Complex blend produces an important synergistic effect, with results greater than those expected from the sum of the individual extracts.

The characteristics of Cramer Color System make it a valuable and reliable ally in the salon, good for the vast majority of classic hair colouring services especially when good coverage of grey/white hair and vibrant tones are requested. On the next page you will find some tips on how to get the most out of this product and how to offer it to clients through a range of services, for a simple and enticing service menu.

Hair colour with coconut oil

Enhancing the hair colour’s key ingredient is a simple and effective way of breathing new life into classic colouring services and to set oneself apart. Coconut oil is especially known for its emollient, protective and shine-boosting properties and quickly allows for a rich product with a highly cosmetic action.

Ammonia-free re-toning

Use Cramer Color tone on tone with 6-volume Uni.Color Oxi for restoring the level and tone of colour-treated hair. Fast and accessible, this service is great between colour treatments to keep the tone rich and vibrant.

Hair colour with coconut oil + Ammonia-free re-toning

Using Cramer Color permanent at the roots and Cramer Color tone on tone on the mid-shafts and ends will deliver long-lasting colour results and maximum brilliance while being respectful of the hair. The combination of the two offers a complete and distinguishing service.

Extra-coverage hair colour

With the Super Naturals and Nordic Super Naturals you can enrich your menu with a service dedicated to clients who want well-defined results or who have always had coverage problems, providing the choice of a warmer or cooler tone.

16

Natural coverage hair colour

For clients looking for brilliance and who prefer to minimise the regrowth touchup commitment, you have the possibility to apply tone-on-tone shades with 16-volume Uni.Color Oxi without needing to mix it with the natural base.

Masking

Cramer Color tone on tone and 6-volume Uni.Color Oxi let you offer a service that is accessible and completely dedicated to first-time hair colour clients who want to manage their first grey/white hairs. The tones will look natural and vibrant while the short-term regrowth will hardly be noticed.

Men’s hair colouring

The Grey Naturals special series provides quick grey/white hair masking, giving a salt and pepper result.

Illuminators

The use of the Illuminators is ideal to increase tone intensity and to tone blondes. The special ingredients in this series enhance the hair’s brilliance, ensuring lustrous results even on processed mid-shafts and ends.

Bleach-free blonde

The Ultra-lighteners are excellent for one-step lightening and toning, producing perfect and luminous blondes without bleaching. This service requires an accurate assessment of the hair’s condition and existing colour, but it can really be a very good alternative to bleaching, including on more sensitive hair.

Pastels

The Pastels series is perfect for creating lustrous and long-lasting pastel results. These shades are used with 6-volume Uni.Color Oxi on pre-bleached hair.

17

Correctors/Intensifiers

Special series

Shade CI.13 is used to correct unwanted red tones.

Add shade CI.13 according to the table.

Cl.13

The amounts of CI.13 specified in the table refer to a dose of colour (50 ml of colour cream + 50 ml of Uni.Color Oxi). If 1 to 10 cm of corrector is added, it is not necessary to increase the amount of Uni.Color Oxi.

Shade Cl.55 is used to intensify red tones.

It can be added in greater amounts than corrector Cl.13; however, keep in mind that if the amount of intensifier exceeds 1/4 of the mixture with the chosen shade, you will have to add Uni.Color Oxi also for the Cl.55 part in a 1:1 mixing ratio.

Example: mix 30 ml of 6.55 + 20 ml of CI.55 with 50 ml di Uni.Color Oxi.

Super-lighteners

Ideal application bases: 5 / 6 / 7.

Mixing ratio: 1:1.5 only with 40-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 50 minutes. To achieve maximum lightening and the highest degree of tone deposit, the processing time can be extended to up to 60 minutes.

Example: mix 50 ml of Super-lightener 100 + 75 ml of 40-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 50 minutes.

Example: mix 50 ml of Ultra-lightener 1000 + 100 ml of 40-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 50 minutes.

Additionally, the Ultra-lighteners make it possible to create streaks and highlights on natural and colour-treated hair regardless of the technique used. It is recommended to always use foil

Ideal application bases on natural hair: 5 / 6 / 7 / 8.

Ideal application bases on colour-treated hair: 6 / 7 / 8. The result may vary depending on the type of colour and saturation on the mid-shafts.

* It is recommended to apply the Super-lighteners and Ultra-lighteners on the natural regrowth. This should not exceed 1.5 cm to avoid demarcation lines. Newly grown hair, in fact, is easily penetrated and less resistant to the product, which achieves its maximum lightening power.

Grey Naturals

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Rules for grey/white coverage

With the exception of the Illuminators, all the shades mixed with 16-volume Uni. Color Oxi can provide up to 70% coverage and be applied directly on grey/white hair without the need to mix them with the natural series.

Rules for grey/white hair masking

With the exception of the Illuminators, all the shades mixed with 6-volume Uni. Color Oxi can provide up to 30% masking, great for concealing and blending the first grey/white hairs with natural tones and discreet results. All of the shades can be applied directly on grey/white hair without the need to mix them with the natural series.

Special series

The ideal series to mask grey/white hair with a salt and pepper result. Especially suited for men’s hair colouring.

Mixing ratio: 1:1.5 with 6- and 16-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 5 minutes.

For immediately visible results, mix with 16-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

For subtle results and no regrowth touch-up commitment, mix with 6-vol. Uni. Color Oxi.

If there is regrowth, make sure you apply the colour just at the roots; apply the colour on the mid-shafts and ends only if necessary and allow it to process for 2 minutes at the most.

30

Illuminators

The ideal series for toning colour-treated or chemically processed mid-shafts and ends, delivering extreme brilliance and long-lasting results.

Mixing ratio: 1:1.5 with 6-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 5 to 20 minutes.

The Illuminators have an essentially neutral pH and can be used alone or in combination with the rest of the colour applied at the roots. Mixing the Illuminators with the other shades will produce a delicate formula that is especially suited to achieve perfect colour results on porous hair. The range consists of 5 shades that cover all the colourist’s needs.

Application: while the colour applied at the roots is processing distribute the mixture throughout the mid-shafts and ends using an Illuminator of the same tone. If applied by themselves, the Illuminators restore the tone without changing the level. If applied in combination with the colour, they are always mixed in equal parts and can recover both level and tone. A service with this series will always leave the hair luminous and easy to detangle.

Pastels

4 shades that are perfect for creating fashion effects on pre-bleached hair.

Ideal application base: 10 with a yellow undertone for shades Peach and Champagne and with no yellow undertone (removed by pre-toning) for shades Wisteria and Rose Gold.

Mixing ratio: 1:1.5 only with 6-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Processing time: 20 minutes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CRAMER COLOR PERMANENT HAIR COLOR

How does the technology work?

The balanced percentage of ammonia swells the hair structure gently, highpenetration micropigments pass through easily, and coconut oil enables easy and smooth application and maximum coverage.

Is it possible to mix Cramer Color in a 1:2 ratio to achieve a higher level of lift?

No, that would change the pH of the mixture and the concentration of the pigments.

Is it possible to add some bleach to the Super-lighteners to increase lightening?

No, that would change the alkalinity of the mixture; in addition, the action of the bleach would destroy the pigments in the Super-lighteners.

Is the skin allergy test indispensable?

The skin allergy test (patch test) is indispensable, just like for all other hair colour products.

In cases of particularly stubborn 100% grey/white hair, to achieve a 7.34 and impeccable coverage is it necessary to mix 7.34 with the Super Naturals and 20vol. Uni.Color Oxi?

No. The Super Naturals are always mixed with 30-vol. Uni.Color Oxi, so the correct mixture is: 25 ml of 7.34 + 25 ml of 7.000 + 50 ml of 30-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Is it possible to cover grey/white hair with the Ash series?

No. The Ash series (.1) only covers up to 30%; for full coverage mix in a ratio of 1:1 with the Naturals or the Nordic Naturals (.08) or, in the event of stubborn hair, with the Nordic Super Natural series (.008).

36

When using intensifier CI.55 in the colour mixture, is it necessary to add more developer?

Yes, if the amount of CI.55 exceeds 1/4 of the mixture with the chosen shade, you need to add Uni.Color Oxi for the intensifier part as well, in a 1:1 ratio.

Can the Super Naturals or Nordic Super Naturals be applied to tone mid-shafts and ends?

No. It is not recommended to use these series since they can only be mixed with 30-vol. Uni.Color Oxi.

Is it possible to use the Super-lighteners or Ultra-lighteners with the other Cramer Color shades?
