Dear reader, The spirited sense of adventure and discovery that imbues the Kempinski brand is inspired by our founder, Berthold Kempinski - a true pioneer. From his beginnings as a wine merchant and restaurateur in the 1890s, he challenged the conventions of food and beverage. And he did it with the European flair, warmth and charm that are his legacy. Over the generations at Kempinski, while we never forget our history and tradition, we are also inquisitive explorers of the world, constantly pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, celebrating creativity, and daring to be different. Today, a new generation is leading Kempinski, which I am proud to be part of. We embrace Kempinski’s values and heritage, and look forward to a bright and exciting future for the brand and our portfolio. So it’s only fitting that we should launch this new magazine now. As you turn each page, you will get a sense of the unique qualities and the bold vision that personify Kempinski today. For example, the sympathetically and painstakingly restored Palais Hansen Kempinski Vienna, featured on pages 24, embodies the essence of Kempinski. Combining history, Viennese charm, and 21st century design, the restoration of this cherished landmark artfully strikes a balance between old and new, with all the amenities today’s guests expect. Just like Berthold in the 19th century, we delight in searching out and discovering inventive new approaches to cuisine. And of course given our origins, excellent wines are an essential complement to the creativity of our chefs. So in Berthold’s honour, we are delighted to announce the Kempinski Wine Programme, directed by ‘Best Sommelier of the World 2013’ winner, Paolo Basso. We asked Paolo to select exceptional wines to perfectly complement our signature dishes to create yet another exclusive experience for our guests. On pages 06 you can read how Paolo has risen to the challenge. In keeping with our heritage of refinement and culture we are enthusiastic committed supporters of the arts. Established in 2009, the Kempinski Young Artists Programme is a perfect example of how we pay homage to our past while embracing the future. Find out more on pages 64. And turn to pages to see the work of one of our gifted young artists - George Sebastian Sachin. George was born in India and still lives and works there producing his very original works made from paper. We hope you enjoy this journey through the world of Kempinski and that you’ll make some fascinating discoveries of your own!

Mini travelling companions
By Farid Chenoune
What do you take when you set off on a journey? It depends on the journey, of course. On whether you’re going for two days, a month or forever, for summer or winter, for work, for a holiday or to change your life. Some people, whether small-scale travellers or seriously nomadic, always take with them some special chosen object and keep it by them on their travels. Like a fetish, lucky charm, talisman, amulet and souvenir rolled into one, as precious to their owners as the apple of their eye. A rather poetic exhibition of such travellers’ mascots was held in Paris this summer. The idea came from the journalist Alexandra Senes, an eager and wide-eyed globetrotter. The objects she brought together came from about a hundred migratory Europeans, famous or unknown. People from fashion, design, entertainment and the media, writers, architects, business people, scientists, aid workers and more.

SPANISH VIBES
::: Sensual Delicacies at Salero Tapas & Bodega ::: Tapas lie at the very heart of Spanish lifestyle and culture. Each region has its own specialties from baked scallops in Galicia to stuffed peppers in San Sebastiรกn, symbolising the festive, sensual and vibrant nature of Spain. Originating in Andalusia in the 19th century, tapas have become a global sensation, invoking the intimacy of relaxed dining with family and friends. In response, Kempinski has created a sophisticated modern-day twist on traditional tapas at Salero Tapas & Bodega, which opened in 2013, at the Kempinski Hotel Mall of Emirates in Dubai. As its name implies, Salero brings charm and elegance to a unique Spanish gastronomy experience accompanied by time-houroured festival rituals. Feast on delicious nibbles while enjoying exquisite guitar melodies and the flamboyance of Flamenco dancers. y
