some of the adjectives that come to mind at the mention of Dubai – our focus for this issue.

And all this is encapsulated in the magnificent masterpiece that is Emerald Palace Kempinski Dubai. A regal tribute to the great palaces of Europe, it is the jewel in the crown of this vibrant, non-stop city. On pages 16-23 we unveil how artisans from Italy and France created this beautiful, majestic palace from marble,

precious metal has been a symbol of wealth, luxury, and celebration. And where better to search for golden gifts for weddings and other special occasions than the famous Dubai gold souk? Turn to page 24 and prepare to be dazzled. Used in the past to search for pearls and to carry trade goods, the iconic Arabian sail boats - dhows -have lost none of their romance. Today they take part in long distance races. You can take a cruise along the Dubai Creek and enjoy dinner on board. In our feature on page 28 we take a closer look at these vessels. Few products reflect a country’s cultural identity more than the Cuban cigar. This iconic national symbol has been produced in the time honoured way for almost 200 years.

gold and precious woods.

Our Burning Passion article on pages 46-51 follows the journey of the cigar from leaf to finished product, then on pages 52-55 relax and savour the moment in the Cigar Lounge at Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich. With four official languages and 10 religions, Singapore has many influences and there is much to explore. Join us on pages 66-71 for a wander around Little India - one of its most colourful and spirited districts, and discover a world of fragrant aromas, mouth-watering food, and stunning architecture. The birthplace of Alpine winter tourism, St Moritz has twice hosted the Winter Olympics. On pages 40-45 we trace the history of winter sports in this famous Swiss resort and take a look at what’s on offer for today’s sporting enthusiasts. Elsewhere in the magazine you’ll find the latest news about our properties around the world and discover some truly amazing experiences for Kempinski guests. I hope you enjoy My Kempinski Experience and I look forward to welcoming you to a Kempinski destination very soon.

This traditional, labour-intensive process has remained unchanged for around 200 years. However, with new technology, cigars can now be tested for quality without having to be lit, and advances in fermentation technology have lowered nicotine content.

Did you know… · Former British prime minister, Winston Churchill became a cigar aficionado while stationed in Havana in 1895. Today all leading Cuban cigar makers produce a ‘Churchill’ cigar. · The band around the head of a cigar (la anilla) was introduced in the 1860s, originally to stop the cigar staining the fingers or white gloves of European smokers. In recent years, holograms have been added to the band to reduce counterfeiting. · Larger varieties of cigars can take up to three hours to smoke.

THE LABOUR-INTENSIVE PRODUCTION OF HABANO CIGARS FOLLOWS A 200-YEAR OLD TRADITION. THE LEAVES PASS THROUGH A THREE-YEAR PROCESS BEFORE BECOMING PART OF A HABANO. FILLER LEAVES ARE EXPERTLY ROLLED BY HAND INTO TWO OR THREE BINDER LEAVES. THE BUNCHES ARE THEN TRIMMED AND PRESSED IN A RACK. THEY ARE NEXT ENCASED IN A WRAPPER COMPRISING ONLY THE BEST LEAVES, TO GUARANTEE A BEAUTIFUL FINISH. A CIRCULAR DISK IS ADDED TO THE CIGAR’S ROUNDED HEAD BEFORE IT’S GIVEN A FINAL TRIM. THE FINISHED CIGARS, EQUAL IN SIZE AND SHAPE, ARE CHECKED FOR IMPERFECTIONS BY A QUALITY CONTROLLER. FINALLY THE MARQUE’S BAND (LA ANILLA) IS ADDED AND THE CIGARS ARE BOXED AND SEALED.

Discover Venice with a private gondolier SAN CLEMENTE PALACE KEMPINSKI VENICE

Gondolas are one of the most iconic and enduring sights in Venice. And no visit to this enchanting city is complete without a romantic ride in one of these historic boats. San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice has made the experience even more magical with their exclusive private gondola tours for KEMPINSKI DISCOVERY members. The tour begins and ends on the famed Piazza San Marco, so you’ll be sure to see Venice’s most important sights from a different perspective. Steering into a small canal, your professional gondolier will stop for two minutes under the famous Bridge of Sighs. Make sure you’re with your loved one, because according to legend, if a couple kiss under the bridge their love will last forever! Continuing along smaller, scenic waterways, you’ll reach the house of Marco Polo, then along the last section of the Grand Canal, you’ll pass the Guggenheim Museum, grand luxury hotels, and many other historical buildings. Sit back and marvel at some of Venice’s most stunning architecture and spectacular bridges as you glide majestically along the atmospheric canals. It’s by far the best way to learn about the history, culture, and character of this most romantic of cities, and to uncover its hidden secrets. Gondolas were once the main form of transport in Venice. A few hundred years ago, around 10,000 of these stately flat-bottomed boats drifted sedately along the canals. Today there are only about 500. Gondolas are still hand-built in dedicated workshops called ‘squeri’. Gondoliers own and maintain their own boats, and their businesses are often passed down through the generations. Only after extensive training, and a tough exam on Venetian history, will a licence be granted. So you’ll be in good hands as you explore breathtaking Venice from the water on board an exquisite example of living history.
