Here we go. A place in the grand final is up for grabs this weekend, with Ringwood set to battle Launceston.
The Hawks booked their spot in this preliminary thanks to a strong performance against Mt Gambier.
These two teams played each other twice during the regular season, both walking away with a win each. Regardless of the result, this will be the final home game for the Hawks and what a season it’s Thanksbeen.
The Tornadoes managed to get Keely Froling, Kelsey Griffin and Marianna Tolo on the floor at the same time for the first time in their elimination final. It makes them a giant threat, with their 8th place finish during the regular season not representative of the talent they have on the floor. They got past Nunawading last night and will be eager to back it up, however fatigue may play a factor in a tough double weekend.
They ended up winning that one 77-71 with Marena Whittle (27pts & 10rebs) and Marta Hermida (26pts & 5asts) leading the way. Digna Strautmane didn’t have her usual scoring impact, but still managed to impose her influence on the game, flirting with a triple double with seven points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.

They were led by Mariah Payne who had 23 points, 1 steal and 1 block, Keely Froling who had 20 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals, Kelsey Griffin who had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block and Marianna Tolo who had 15 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks.

The Tornadoes continued their winning form last night in the Semi Final against the Nunawading Spectres and will be looking to keep that momentum going today against the Hawks. The Hawks come into this game having won our Qualifying Final against the Mt Gambier Pioneers (77 71). We were led by Marena Whittle who had 27 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block, Marta Hermida who had 26 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block, Digna Strautmane who had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists and 3 steals and Toni Farnworth who had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocks.
Today’s game will see the winner progress to the NBL1 South Grand Final. With the stakes at their highest, get ready for a classic! Tess Madgen was terrific for Bendigo once more with 29 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and two steals with Megan McKay contributing 23 points and seven boards, and Abbey Wehrung 20 points and seven rebounds. Cassidy Mihalko finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds for Nunawading who have earned a finals double chance.
Marena Whittle produced 27 points and 10 rebounds in the win for the Hawks while Marta Hermida added 26 points, six boards and five assists.
The playoffs in the NBL1 South got underway on Saturday with an elimination final at the State Basketball Centre and it was the visiting Waverley Falcons who proved too strong for the Knox Raiders, winning 83 68.
The Waverley Falcons and Launceston Tornadoes extended their NBL1 South Wom- en's seasons with elimination final wins on Saturday night while the Bendigo Braves and Ringwood Hawks won straight through to being able to host preliminary finals.
The NBL1 South Women's finals series got underway on Saturday night with all of the top eight teams in action, but by the end of the evening, the season was over for the Knox Raiders and Geelong Supercats, and Bendigo and Ringwood had advanced to the preliminary final.
The Braves proved too strong too to move into hosting the preliminary final next week by beating the Spectres 91 73.
The other qualifying final took place at The Rings and it was a tight affair where the Ringwood Hawks produced a strong second half to end up beating the Mount Gambier Pioneers 77 71.
Cassasndra Brown top scored for Mount Gambier with 20 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Sara Blicavs produced 25 points and 12 rebounds as the season came to an end for the Supercats.
The first of the qualifying finals on Saturday night then took place at Red Energy Arena and it was a brilliant atmosphere in Bendigo with well over 1000 people crammed into the building as the Bendigo Braves hosted the Nunawading Spectres.
Bec Cole was outstanding for the Falcons in the win with 25 points and six assists while Carley Ernst put up 22 points and 10 rebounds. Alicia Froling had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Kiera Rowe 17 points and nine boards for Knox as their season came to an end.
The other elimination final took place at The Geelong Arena and the home team couldn’t stick with the Launceston Tornadoes who went on to defeat the Geelong Supercats 77 65. Maria Payne finished with 23 points for Launceston with Keely Froling contributing 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Marianna Tolo 15 points, 12 boards, five assists and five blocked shots.

time is starting preparations for the 2023 NBL1 season with the announcement of the appointment of popular Hawks Assistant Coach Damien Smith to the role of Men’s Head Coach.
Smith has been on the Hawks bench as an Assistant Coach for 11 seasons but his connection to the Club started many years before that. As a skilled and super quick junior player, Smith developed his love of the game and love of the Club through the Hawks VJBL program. He was soon noticed by the State’s best coaches and was selected in State squads and programs and then eventually into the Hawks senior program. His journey was just starting though as the USA came calling and Smith joined another Hawk Jason Eversteyn at Hill College in Texas. After a season in Texas, Smith was arguably at the top of his game and upon return to Australia headed to Mount Gambier when he helped the Pioneers win a memorable National Championship. Despite only playing 2 seasons with the Pioneers, Smith was voted in the top 20 Pioneer players of all time.
When it was time to return to Victoria, Smith followed Coach Ken Harrington for 2 seasons at Sherbrooke where he was outstanding on and off the court, leading the team to the Big V playoffs both years. In late 2005, Harrington and Smith then returned to Ringwood where they have both been for the last 17 years, Harrington as Coach and Smith as a player and Assistant Coach. Together they had a part in 6 State Championships and in the process turning the Hawks into a powerhouse. It is now poetic that Smith will take one step up the bench and replace Harrington who was happy to pass the torch to his loyal player, assistant and friend. “Damo is going to be a great Head Coach.” Harrington said. “He has all the attributes that matter, he loves the game, he loves the player’s and he loves the Club. He is ready to go.”
“I have definitely been around long enough and have watched great coaches like Kenny.” Smith said. “This Hawks team has made improvements each year in NBL1 and I can’t wait to get to work and hopefully take another step next year. “

Smith has had a front row seat to the trials and tribulations of Head Coaching at Big V and NBl1 level so he will hit the ground running and start the process of building his coaching staff, rosters and everything else that goes with it. He is definitely excited about the next step.

Back in 2016, the Hawks had a 3 game semi final series against the Knox Raiders. After going down in game one at home, the Hawks dug deep and won games 2 and 3 on the road to propel themselves in to another grand final.
