E
ducation is one of the most powerful means of positively transforming young lives to resourceful adults. At KenGen, actively supports education of the youth at primary school, secondary school and university levels as one of its key Corporate Social Investment pillars. KenGen does this mainly through the following ways: • Offering Annual scholarships to bright and deserving students; • Supporting schools infrastructure developments such as school facilities, furniture and provision of educational materials; • The Annual Mentorship Programme

ince 2005, KenGen has invested over KSh. 17.5 million in education scholarships for tomorrow’s leaders, with over 350 students benefiting from the programme by the year 2014.
Objectives: •
Every year, KenGen continues with its custom of offering annual scholarships to 36 students across the country many from areas where the company has operations. 18 of these scholarships go towards high school education, while the rest target university students.

High school students who attain Grade A in KCSE get automatic sponsorship to universities, while university students who attain first class degrees upon graduation receive automatic employment at KenGen in line with the company’s Corporate Social Investment policy.

What the scholarship means to you

he central goal of this program is to enable beneficiaries realise their dreams and achieve their life goals through the achievement of a holistic education. It aims at assisting students fully realize their potential and enable them become better citizens and major players in the realisation of our country’s social and economic goals. The scholarships offer the beneficiaries opportunities to achieve academic excellence while at the same time opening doors to great careers and better futures. While it is KenGen that gives out these scholarships, the actual work towards achieving and realising the goals set out lie with individual beneficiaries, who are encouraged to take full advantage of the programme to ensure the scholarships are offered to only those who deserve and make use of it.

he KenGen Foundation organizes the Annual Mentorship Programme for all the Scholarship programme beneficiaries in order to enhance their academic performance, character, social and leadership development. The holistic mentoring enshrined in the vision of the Annual Mentorship Programme guides the students in discovering their potentials and talents that they are endowed with, and project them onto the path that will lead them to become tomorrow’s transformational leaders. In addition to personal mentoring, students are also exposed to peer-mentoring and coaching opportunities by leading motivational speakers and mentors. The mentorship programme attracts leading professionals at the top of their fields to deliver a series of lectures and workshops. This creates a platform that allows the students to become transformational leaders of tomorrow by interacting and learning from the great leaders of today.

he central goal of the Mentorship Programme is the creation of a strong relationship between the Foundation, (which serves as a role model and life coach) and the beneficiaries. The students require a lot of nurturing and guidance. The defined expectation is improving the mentee’s academic skills and enabling them acquire new skills and knowledge as we build relationships.

All students under sponsorship are expected to maintain good grades through out the scholarship period and have no disciplinary issues with their institution. The Company will carry out terminal checks on academic performance. Beneficiaries are expected to submit their performance records to the KenGen offices within their area each term without fail. No student is allowed multiple scholarships, and anyone found to have flouted this will automatically forfeit his/ her scholarship opportunity. Students that are awarded university scholarships are encouraged not to apply for HELB loans, as these are a burden when they are employed. All students must submit their full annual fees structures at the beginning of each academic year.

Employment Opportunities
T
he success of the Annual Mentorship programme is emphasised by Secondary School students who attain the best grades and University Students who graduate with first class honours. As per the CSI policy, the KenGen Company is obliged to offer high school students who attain an A grade in KCSE automatic sponsorship to university, and university students who attain First Class Honours employment depending on the subjects taken and availability of positions. The students have also expressed interest in working with KenGen and are very enthusiastic to join the Company. The motivation from this award has made the sponsored students very competitive in their studies. The Foundation continues to encourage them to achieve impressive results to enable them become more suitable for the job market.

The KenGen Foundation ince its formal establishment in 1997, KenGen has been involved in Corporate Social Responsibility activities, specifically targeting communities living in areas neighbouring its installations. This corporate effort has been driven by KenGen’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen and its belief in adding value to the livelihoods of targeted communities by establishing relationships and implementing sustainable community projects.
The effort has also been encouraged by the company’s realization that it cannot operate in isolation from the environment around it. This environment includes among others communities, natural resources, stakeholders and development partners. KenGen established a Foundation in 2012 to serve as the vehicle for up-scaling its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programs. The KenGen Foundation is run by a Managing Trustee and is governed by a Board of Trustees. KenGen is fully committed to long-term environmentally sustainable development that is consistent with national and international standards in the generation of reliable, safe, quality and competitively priced electric energy in the Eastern Africa region.
