Re:school Design competition

Weekend home The brief is to design a weekend home in an isolated site near Vasad, which is 35 kms from Vadodara for a couple. The main idea of this house was to be used as a get way from the busy and hectic life in the city and have some time for themselves and achieve peace. Being a weekend home, thier requirement also stated that there will be a lot of guests coming around. Thus it should it should be open and at the same time it should have thier own privacy. The site located in an isolated area, It is on top of hill where you see a lake right in front of you. Thus, the building was designed in such a manner that it takes all the advantages of the site and solve the isuues created by the site. The building is basically divided in 3 zones. public, Semi- public and Private. The building also has a green recreational space and a swiming pool placed in a way that the pool gets the view of the lake and the green space is always shaded with the help of buildings shadow.

With the spaces working in a hiearchy, It is also defined with a level difference. With each different zone, there is a step down and with that there is a sky light added between the two slabs which not only defines the different zones but also gives a cinematic view inside the envolope of the building.

Meditation center People coming from different places and with different mindsets, to a place like this where they come to find inner peace, one needs an environment which helps them to attain that. Thus by creating a landscape that makes multiple pathways and closer to each other that keeps the pathways cozy. Between these landscape, in the center of the site there is this contour garden which can also be called as a conclusion of the whole project where one can go and sit after the meditation or the therapy. It is also in the center of the site because it gets the main focus and is equal distance to everyone. The main built area is the meditation hall, therapy centers and the registration building. all these buildings are tried to keep in different corners of the site the the people get distributed and it would get easy for them to know where they have to go. The compound walls has a height of 5.5 meters which helps to keep the noice pollution down and thus people can concentrate and attain inner peace.

Extension proposal for a performing arts institute The faculty of performing arts follows a very strong style of architecture pattern and the total area provides a scope for extension of the building. The faculty of performing arts includes courses for music, dance, and theater but the existing building is not able to fulfill all the required facilities to run all the three courses. The issues faced by the students and the staff in the campus is mostly related to parking, less no. of workshops and no space dedicated as informal sitting or gathering space. The college also demands an amphitheater to exhibit and showcase their work where not just the students but people from outside can come and understand the art and see what the college is trying to achieve. Thus after studying the building and its context in detail, this design proposal is made which has been made by taking care of its context, students and staffs need and the other major problems the building suffers from. The extension tries to create spaces which will benefit the campus and also the students studying here.

Skill developement institute There was need felt for scaling up concerted efforts to enhance skill development in India, in response to identified gap in the area of skill development. Government of Indian has taken policy decision to take up capacity building in this unaddressed area. This programme of skill development will encourage the entrepreneurship attitude in majorly existing youth population in study area. In the context of county’s transition to knowledge based economy, through the creation of a professional skilled workforce government has decided to facilitate youths both in urban and rural area by establishing a properly designed learning environment. It is an institution dedicated to the advancement of attitude, skills and knowledge for survival in global working environment

Documentation of a performing arts institute The Sursagar precinct has a very strong historical context with old fortified mandvi city towards the eastern side and major institutional buildings flanking at its edges. One of which is the performing arts institute. The structure being longitudinal, The major axis passes horizontally. The minor axis passes vertically. The building of performing arts institute has been built to the plinth level of 3 mts. from the road because earlier the Sursagar lake had no concrete boundries and channels built for water diversion in flood situations. The building has wooden staircase which is half-turned staircase with landing and the main staircase is just at the enterance of the building. It acts as a junction for students to interact. The building has wooden flooring. The roof of this building is inspired by Padmanabhapuram palace. Wooden trusses are of the supporting elements that covers a large span and works in load span.

Re:school, volume zero design competition Education as a tool has a pivotal role in imparting a perspective regarding your role in the cosmos through making you understand your potential, capabilities and own self. It caters to your intellect, physiology and conscience and make you more humane towards your approach for life. This project would enable imparting education in its truest form that is to create better humans and help sustenance of humanity, it will guide the future course of actions in this situation of unrest rightly through citizens by citizens and for citizens, this would lay foundation for a more aware, humane and equipped future generation who seek peace, inspiration and development not eye for an eye. In an insurgent region like Kashmir, where each day is passed with fear and social unrest, Education is directly compromised. Parents fear sending their wards to school in such an environment of havoc and distress. The proposal aims at overcoming the prevalent social anxiety in Kashmir through built form where children can learn without mental distress.

Double insulated ballistic glass to retain heat and forms walkable recreational space.

Steel truss forms roof.

Concrete ramp connecting both the courts, allowing easy accessability to kids. Platforms for theoretical education.

Space beneath ramps creating rooms for academic and admin purpose.

Amphitheater in adjacent court for practical and informal education.

Stone, locally available in Kashmir, forms a protective layer to the interior from extreme weather conditions.

Keeping in mind the extremely harsh cold and winds, going -5.0 M below the ground helps maintain thermal comfort.

32

Basic design Basic design plays a key role in design developement and understanding design principles and colour schemes. These are 3 different Basic design exercises which explains the idea of what the process tought and created at the end of it. These exercises help understand different forms which we can create from very basic shapes and then exploring it further, try to give it a meaning and putting a function in it.

33

34

Metamorphosis Material: Fabric and steel Fabric structure is a type of structure charachterized by tensioning of fabric membrane with the help of structural members to provide critical support to a structure. Tensile fabric structures permits designing of exciting forms that would be almost impossible with traditional building methods.

35

Montage

Vertical lines will form the arches and the diagonal lines will form the supports.

The structure will consist of arches and support made of steel and fabric as a filler material. Space frame will be formed of steel. Fabric will be used as a filler material. On scaling the model 6x times, triangles having longer side 50 cm (arch) and shorter side 21cm will be formed which acts as unit for the space frame.

36

Evolution The purpose of this exercise was to understand the space crated by triangulation in a wooden branch. The framwork is either covered or semi covered which is explained through plans, sections and models.

A branch was taken, which then was covered by thread on its every corner, which formed triangles on its outer part. Then some of the triangles were covered with a translucent or an opaque material of a neutral color scheme. This hide some the branches because of the covering material and some were partially seen. After the model completed, using its triangles a model was to be created which basically showed the exterior of the branch where all the points on the model were the end points of the branch and all its triangles made using surface development method. The surface development model was then documented and its sketches were made using different mediums.

Using the surface development model, It was assumed to be a proper building structure and then conceptual drawings were made showing ramps, glass, balcony etc. Using the surface development model, using its edges and corners, another model was created with bamboo sticks and connected with strings. And just like the first exercise some of the triangles were covered using black and grey sheets. Then its sections were made.

37

Amalgamation Few images were taken which gives an understanding of space, landscape, interior, and structure. These images were used in different shapes to depict a scenario like “Structure in a landscape”, “Interior of a space”, and “Detail of a structure”. Out of all the compositions, one was chosen and a part of it was selecter. The selected part was extruded and tried to create a space out of it.

38

Photography & Installations As a part of extra carricular work, Being the Cultural head for the academic year 2018-19, These are a few installations constructed during the time. Along with that, Photography being on of my great interests, These are are few captured during our related study programmes.
