Artist Statement Heaven and Earth, 2019 With this group of images, I revisit the eternal and fascinating relationship between earth and sky— between stoic landscapes and their influencing opposite: a troposphere bursting with activity and rapidly shifting intention and mood. The work in this cycle reflects a welcome (if never quite settled) return to form, after a year of challenges that left me with a truer appreciation than ever of the sweep of time. Nothing, for me, expresses this better than the never-ending rhythms of the natural landscape, and the considerable but ultimately temporary imprint of human activity. I feel fortunate to live these years in the upper Hudson Valley, which is still rural and agricultural, with more farms (and farms of greater diversity) than it had even five years ago. Surrounded by mountains laced with foot trails, it is an ideal location for an inveterate hiker and painter whose work depends on landscape as a setting for captured and imagined drama.
