Meet the new Assistant Director for Housing Operations, Everette Nichols! HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM DHRL!

2015!

On Monday, March 14th the Department of Housing and Residence Life received a new Assistant Director for Housing Operations, Everette Nichols. Everette replaces the former Assistant Director, Don Morrissey, who retired at the end of December after 34 years of service to Jefferson. Everette comes to TJU from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he served as the Interim Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Development. Please help us welcome Everette to Thomas Jefferson University! In Everette’s previous role as Interim Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Development at Appalachian State he worked with historically marginalized students and student organizations. He trained faculty, staff and students on topics of social justice and served as the advisor of the Black Student Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and the Sexuality and Gender Alliance club. Before Appalachian State, Everette served as a Resident Director at Florida Gulf Coast University, in the department of Housing and Residence Life. In that position he supervised Resident Assistants, advised Hall Council and worked with university camps and conferences. Before entering the field of Student Affairs, Everette attended Michigan State University (Go Spartans!!!) and attained his Master’s Degree in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education. He also received a certificate in Teaching Excellence. Everette is passionate about working in higher education which came from his experiences as a Resident Assistant and student leader at Appalachian State University. “I love working with students, families and community partners in addition to all of the learning that takes place in and outside of the classroom” says Everette. One of his lifelong goals, and one reason he chose to move to Philadelphia, is to attain his PhD and/or JD, eventually serving as a Dean of Students or Chief Diversity Officer. Even though his current role is outside of the “traditional world” of Higher Education, Everette’s goal is to bring the world of Residential Operations and Residence Life closer together with the help of the Desk Clerks, Resident Assistants and main office staff. Outside of work Everette loves reading comic books (specifically Original X-Men and the Justice League), volunteering, reading books on social justice, working out at the gym, traveling and visiting new restaurants. He can easily be spotted, most days, wearing a bowtie and dreads.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month RA Article by: Sara Munie, Orlowitz RA FACTS:  A forcible rape occurs every 6.2 minutes within the U.S.  Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) have been raped at some time in their lives  More than half of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8% by an acquaintance.  Most female victims of completed rape (79.6%) experienced their first rape before the age of 25, and 42.2% before the age of 18  More than 1 in 4 male victims of completed rape (27.8%) experienced their first rape when they were 10 years of age or younger. How can you help prevent sexual assault? The bystander intervention approach gives a witness or a bystander safe and positive ways to intervene and stop incidents that can lead to sexual assault and speak out against language that supports sexual violence. Five steps toward taking action 1. Notice the event along a continuum of actions: a. Is it a healthy, age appropriate, mutually respectful and safe? b. Is it age-inappropriate or non-mutual? c. Is it harassment? d. Is it sexual abuse or violence? 2. Consider whether the situation demands your action 3. Decide if you have a responsibility to act 4. Choose what form of assistance to use: recruit friends, other by-standers or the police 5. Understand how to implement the choice safely Resources: http://www.victimsofcrime.org/our-programs/dna-resource-center/untested-sexual-assaultkits/about-sexual-assault http://www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/Publications_NSVRC_Factsheet_Bystander-SAAM-2011.pdf
