What is the real meaning behind Cinco de Mayo? RA Article by: Carrie Wise, Martin 8th Floor RA While commonly mistaken as Mexico’s Independence Day, May 5th recognizes the Mexican Army’s huge victory over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Today, the United States recognizes Cinco de Mayo as a celebration of Mexican history, culture and heritage. From tasty dishes and drinks, to festive mariachi music and colorful décor, there are many activities to engage in. Check out the local restaurants, museums and events celebrating this festive holiday throughout the first week of May! Chipotle Guacamole (Via chipotle.com) Ingredients: 2 ripe Hass avocados 2 tsp lime juice 2 tbsp fresh cilantro (chopped) ¼ c red onion (finely chopped) ½ jalapeño, including seeds (finely chopped) ¼ tsp kosher salt

Directions: • Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit • Scoop out the avocado and place in a bowl • Toss to coat with lime juice • Add salt and combine ingredients until a smooth consistency is reached • Fold in remaining ingredients • Taste, and adjust seasoning if needed Reference: http://www.mexica.net/literat/cinco.php

Moving Out?!? Some other items to consider… FINAL ELECTRIC BILL: (Barringer & Orlowitz only) Property Management will notify Energy Management Systems of your termination date. Final electricity charges will be billed directly to Philadelphia Management. Those charges will be added to your ledger and will be deducted from your security deposit. STORAGE LOCKERS: Barringer and Orlowitz residents: Remember to empty your storage locker and leave it unlocked. All items must be removed from storage upon termination. Items found in storage after a resident’s departure will be considered abandoned and discarded. Thomas Jefferson University and the Department of Housing and Residence Life are not responsible for items, lost stolen, damaged or discarded. GENERAL INFORMATION: Please do not attempt to patch any holes or to remove any picture or mirrors that are fastened to the walls by adhesives. If you live in Martin you can notify the property management staff (via the front desk) to arrange item removal so that damages can be minimized. If you live in Barringer or Orlowitz, Philadelphia Management Company will remove extraneous nails and adhesives after your move. When moving items out the building back door of the Orlowitz building, notify the desk clerk to open the door for you (and, in turn, turn off the alarm.) NEVER LEAVE THE BACK DOOR UNATTENDED. The protection of yourself and other tenants is dependent on each person’s responsibility in this area. Immediately notify the front desk when you are finished using the back door in order to have the alarm door re-activated. Elevators and hand trucks cannot be reserved. They are, however, available on a first come, first served basis when you leave an ID with your front desk clerk. Do not pass a cart to another tenant- the last person to sign out a cart is held responsible for its return. Tenants are urged to return and secure carts to the designated cart storage locations in each building’s lobby. LOADING ZONE: There is limited loading zone space behind all three Residence Halls. Please only park there when you are fully ready to move your belongings out and not while you are still packing or cleaning. Remember to get a parking pass for the loading zone. Each parking pass is good for only one (1) hour. Make sure to get the pass renewed if you need more time!

May Holidays th

RA Article by: Alexander Adams, Martin 5 Floor RA Two of the most important May holidays are Mother’s Day on Sunday May 8 and Memorial Day on Monday May 30. For many, these are holidays of reflection with family and friends, at a beautiful time in the year where warm weather and flowers are arriving and plans are being made for the forthcoming summer. In line with the reflective theme, please enjoy these poems, the first about spring time, entitled “[in Just-]” by E.E. Cummings; the second an author’s tribute to her mother, entitled “Sonnets are full of love” by Christina Rossetti; and the third about the sacrifice of soldiers, entitled “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. “[in Just-]” in Justspring when the world is mudluscious the little lame balloonman whistles far and wee and eddieandbill come running from marbles and piracies and it's spring when the world is puddlewonderful the queer old balloonman whistles far and wee and bettyandisbel come dancing from hop-scotch and jump-rope and it's spring and the

“Sonnets are full of love” Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome Has many sonnets: so here now shall be One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me To her whose heart is my heart's quiet home, To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome; Whose service is my special dignity, And she my loadstar while I go and come And so because you love me, and because I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name: In you not fourscore years can dim the flame Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws Of time and change and mortal life and death. By Christina Rossetti

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up your quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. By John McCrae
