Our mission
‘Generation after generation stands in awe of your work; each one tells stories of your mighty acts’ Psalm 145:4-7 (NIV)
2017 is also going to be a great year! As Riverlife, we will move into a new ministry facility and continue to progress forward and reach more people. We are going to continue passionately pursuing our Father’s presence and pour out unprecedented levels of compassion on all who He brings to us. Thank you so much for all you do in the name of Jesus and for the church. With love and gratitude for your faithfulness, John Robertson Senior Pastor

I am extremely thankful to God for all He has done this year. I am also thankful for you. It’s because of your serving, your giving and your prayer that lives have been changed; not just at KBC but also in other churches and communities across the globe. God has called ordinary people just like you and me to step out in faith to accomplish extraordinary things in His power and through His provision so that the world might know about the new life that they can have in Jesus.
Thank you for the love and support that you so generously give towards others. People’s lives are being changed every day at our church because of the way you have opened yourselves up to be used by God to love, care for and reach out to people. You are a blessing and I am so grateful and thankful for the part you have played this year.

2016 was a monumental year at Kenmore Baptist Church! Celebrating the 50th year since the KBC family was started, we took the next steps of faith in pioneering a new work to bring life for generations to come. Throughout the year we have seen the emergence of the new ministry facility at Seventeen Mile Rocks, a much anticipated and exciting journey of faith for us as a church. It was stirring to see that, as the building emerged, so too has our enthusiasm to make the vision of bringing life for generations a reality. God has continued to demonstrate to us His provision for this project, and your faithful and sacrificial gifts are incredibly generous. Thank you.

lifecentre and Prayer The LifeCentre and Prayer Ministry continued to minister into our congregation and the greater community in 2016. Each area is growing as more people are seeking prayer. The MOREH and Sozo teams grew as we added new members through training and mentorship. The Sozo team has done over 100 sessions and MOREH has seen over 60 people for ministry, many times on multiple occasions. It is a blessing to see God restore wholeness and reveal truth to relationships and individual lives. Many people inside and outside the church have been touched by the LifeCentre and Prayer Ministry. Over 500 prayer ministry sessions were conducted in the LifeCentre during 2016. The LifeCentre Pastor alone has conducted over 200 prayer ministry sessions for inner healing, deliverance and physical healing. Two intercessory prayer teams met regularly to uphold the greater church, services, staff as well as the Streams Ministry. Weekly opportunities for prayer are also extended through prayer ministry in each service, use of the prayer chain and staff praying for the needs of the congregation each Monday.
sozo for me, is simply about giving space to “ Sozo, God who wants to give me more than I can
hold. This gentle ministry of guided prayer helped me to ask the right questions and to listen to what God was saying. That brought deep healing and restoration in my life. Spending such an intimate time with God brought a renewed sense of peace to several situations. I was also able to share some of the things God revealed to me with those closest to me, bringing joy to them. That was an unexpected blessing I didn’t expect to receive from a Sozo. Each time I have a Sozo, I walk away with a love letter of revelations. As part of Sozo, one prayer minister writes down all the wonderful things that God speaks into your life during a session. Having these letters from God allows me to reflect on these revelations in the weeks to come. This helped me take the truths God spoke to me and allow them to settle deep into my heart and mind after the session was over. What a wonderful journey God has set before us! I hope my experience will inspire others to receive prayer ministry through the LifeCentre.”

community Outreach It has been a fruitful year for Community Outreach with 100 homes supported by Street Teams and over 50 people participating in Alpha and Towards Belief. It is common to hear people talking about how exciting it is to make Christ known in our wider community through word and action! We have run two ‘Frontline Forums’ to further our cultural shift towards everyday outreach. KBC Football and Netball clubs provided opportunity for connection with those yet to know Christ. Many participants on our sports teams have no connection to the life of the church, yet we have strategic and brilliant leaders in place helping to bridge the gap.
Despite some opposition to Religious Instruction in Queensland schools, God has graciously enabled our team to overcome all obstacles and allowed instructors to press forward within our local schools. We have creatively experimented with social media outreach, deployed our LOGOS team into local schools and community events, and anticipate brilliant Christmas outreach events at both the Combined Churches Community Carols and a new initiative in connection to the Sinnamon Park Christmas lights utilising our new coffee trailer.

A highlight of every Alpha season is the Holy Spirit Retreat Day. Held in the last few weeks of the program, this all-day event allows participants to dig deeper into receiving Jesus as Lord and experience Holy Spirit’s presence. In some cases we are able to pray for participants to receive the Holy Spirit; their willingness a sign of trust and openness that has been building throughout the course. The Holy Spirit Retreat Day piggybacks onto the Encountering God Retreat, and in this last Alpha season a couple of participants joined in on the Encounter Retreat’s prayer and cleansing stations.

Part of the thrill of leading is walking alongside each participant with all their assorted backgrounds, experiences and age ranges, allowing the opportunity for diverse opinions and challenging conversations. It’s always great to see the reaction of the participants when they have the opportunity to really share what is on their heart without judgement or correction, opening up for them the possibility of a life with Christ.

year my wife, Laura, and I have been blessed “ This to participate in both Streams courses. Through these courses, God has fuelled a desire in us to see His will done in our everyday lives. For both of us, this whole ‘being a Christian’ thing finally made sense at the first Encounter weekend. Sure, we had said the words, spent heaps of time reading the Bible and generally tried to be ‘good’ Christians, but it had never clicked. The missing element, for us, was community; particularly a community intentionally coming forward in worship and making space for God to do what only He can do. This amazing opportunity has left us wanting more. Through a series of incredibly unlikely events, we are now heading off to Bali for a 6-month Discipleship Training School through YWAM. We have absolutely no idea what God has planned for us, but we are excited to find out.”

It has been a significant year of growth and consolidation in our Spiritual Formation ministry. We have had another great year of Streams courses, with more than seventy people taking the Transforming journey into healed and whole living. We placed a special emphasis on the Engaging course this year, with the desire to raise up those who had experienced life in Christ, and were ready to step into exploring calling and service. We had fifty-five people go through this course, and we have already seen God call many of those people into new areas of service and greater depth of intimacy and partnership with God.

Young adults “I’ve found an incredible home in KBC.” – Jess, a new YA at KBC this year. It is exactly this sense of belonging that we are passionate about creating in Young Adults ministry. Our passion is to see people revived by God and find a deep family connection. We have been blessed this year to have a number of significant guests with Pastor Paul Yadao (Destiny Ministries, Philippines) and Georgian Banov (Global Celebration) bringing fresh momentum and joy to our passion for God. We have had great opportunities to join in community at our Fireplace suppers each month, with more than 600 people attending across the year. We have had deep times of corporate celebration at our ‘Lounge Room Worship’ events; and a new cohort of Young Adults leaders, preachers and ministry members have been rising up through our YAs by YAs nights and the Young Adult Executive leadership team. Our outreach across University and Schoolies mission trips (Red Frogs, Scripture Union and Power to Change), as well as YAs on mission trips (Borneo, Thailand, Africa and more) has seen amazing personal growth. The power of the Good News is being declared and demonstrated to people everywhere from our home front to the nations.
came to KBC to pursue a girl. It “ Iturns out that it was one of the best
decisions I have made in my life - not only because of the girl, but because of the home I have found amongst the young adults of KBC. For a country guy coming from a small church it was a big change, and such a blessing to be engaged in what is an extremely rich young adults’ culture. Through the support of Christian friends I have been able to make the most of what the Young Adult Ministry offers. From meeting new people at the Fireplace Suppers to joining a growth group, my faith has continued to grow. Earlier this year I went on mission to Malaysia. I have never felt closer to God than when my circumstances required me to fully trust and rely on Him. This experience, combined with the Transforming Course, has completely revolutionised how I see God and myself and has led me to now invest into the next generation as a Foundations Ministry leader. Overall, my faith and knowledge would not be what it is now without the Young Adults Ministry at KBC. I am truly blessed to be a part of something so great.”

been on several overseas mission trips “ I’ve but our recent time in Borneo was definitely
a special one. KBC has been investing in the nation of Malaysia for many years and to head over and experience what God is doing throughout our partnerships over there was truly remarkable. Early on in the trip our team was asked to pray a blessing over a man’s family in the city of Kuching. Upon arriving at the house it became evident that God had bigger plans for this family. God revealed specific things we were able to pray and minister into, giving us the chance to share the good news of Jesus who was clearly at work. We stood in awe as we witnessed the grandfather right down to the youngest daughter receive Jesus into their life. Stories similar to this were not uncommon throughout the trip and God really touched the lives of many young people in the hostel we support in the village of Timbua. The God we know, love and partner with is at work in powerful ways in the nations He has led us to. May these nations come to know His light!”

Community Development This year has been a wonderful year for Growth Groups throughout the whole church family, seeing 47% growth across all categories. We have over 1170 people listed as group attendees. This excludes Youth (12-18 age groups) where we have another 100 regularly meeting on a Friday afternoon and evening. Another alignment series and new Growth Group training was introduced during this year, providing great opportunity to walk together. The break down is exciting within all areas, seeing strong and healthy growth through a thriving small group ministry. We have also seen an amazing work amongst the other areas helping to bring a sense of community to our church family. ‘Beloved’ Women’s Ministry regularly connected together to be a blessing to one another which culminated in a retreat with over 120 women. From morning ‘til night, nearly every day of the week, activities are held in the lower and upper halls that bring a sense of community and engagement as family. Whether it is KidsPlay with new programs providing an increase in numbers during the day, or Soul Café on a Sunday night, the current facility is heaving with life and is ready to expand. A great sense of excitement is building as we transition across the river in 2017, seeing a heavy focus on developing ongoing community with many new ‘Life Groups’, to engage new life within our church family.
growth groups had been looking for a Growth “ IGroup for some time prior to coming
to KBC. As a shift worker, it can cause my attendance to be irregular which has made it a challenge to be part of a group. When talking to the pastors about joining a Growth Group it was pointed out that they have a large number of Growth Groups with numerous dynamics to suit different people’s lives. I was introduced to a group with the flexibility so that my work was not a barrier. It has allowed me to meet some absolutely lovely people while learning a deeper understanding of the Bible, and has also allowed me to draw closer to the Lord. On occasions we all get together to enjoy a meal and each other’s company. I would really recommend to anyone who would like to be part of a group, but think that for one reason or another they can’t, to talk to the pastors. You would be amazed at what is out there.”

Kids Fo u n d a t i o n s a part of the Grade 6 Foundations “ Being team this year has challenged me, excited
me and brought me abundant amounts of joy. My role was to mentor a group of girls every Sunday morning for the program, consisting of a message, worship and small group discussion. The passion and energy that the kids have really took me by surprise. Their willingness to pray for our visiting speaker or partake in small group discussions is what I admire the most. Not only was I impacted by the kids, but also by the speakers. The messages they shared were so pertinent to the season of life I was in and I left every Sunday feeling refreshed and empowered. The girls who I mentored grew so much in the semester; from being awkwardly shy and not talking in our first group session to maturing into people who asked tough questions, prayed for each other and developed the courage to genuinely care for one another. I have seen that Foundations provides the opportunities for kids to seek answers and to freely explore God and who He is without hesitation or pressure, in a safe place where they can be vulnerable. I am excited to see where this new ministry goes!”

It’s Sunday and the halls, courtyards and every available space are buzzing with the sound of kids’ voices. Spaces are transformed with colour and kid-friendly games, and tables and props ready for leaders to share God’s love and truth. Catering for kids from one year old and up, Sunday morning is a busy place where 85 leaders invest their time, love, knowledge and God’s grace into the lives of our youngest KBC family members. This year we followed God into an exciting new ministry area. 18 eleven to twelve year olds committed to a 16 week spiritual growth course called ‘Foundations’. These Grade 6 students were equipped, challenged and nurtured as they spent every Sunday morning together, supported by a team of teachers and mentors. Through an interactive variety of learning experiences, the students learned about Christ, their calling, their character, their strengths and weaknesses, and have had the opportunity to serve the church community in a wide variety of areas. It has been thrilling to see how their faith has grown as they engaged with God as the true Foundation and source of their life. Our weekly kids’ ministry also extends outside of Sundays. Girls’ Brigade continued to grow this year and now ministers to 80 girls. Rock also reaches another 60 kids every Friday night.

Worship and Creative Arts It’s Sunday. Birds are chirping, trees swaying gently in the breeze, voices are raised to God in harmonious praise. Children dash from room to room. People pause to catch their breath at the top of the myriad of stairs. Ping pong balls randomly hit those who try to shortcut across the courtyard. High-fives, handshakes and beaming smiles are freely given by the friendly Host Team tribe. Cars coming in narrowly miss those going out. The smell of roasted coffee beans wafts out from under the sails. Thirty Youth Church kids squeeze into a room designed for ten. It’s Sunday, at KBC! Sunday is family day: a time when we join together as God’s family to worship and encounter Him, encourage one another, grow in our faith and prepare for our frontlines in the week ahead. This looks different from week to week, and in 2016 has included fun and fabulous family services, young and hip youth services, 26 baptisms, 13 infant dedications, countless opportunities for prayer and ministry and being led in worship by our team of 147 fabulous volunteers. The teaching has been varied throughout the nine different series, but predominantly has reminded us again to continue to see God’s Kingdom advance by being on mission every day. Creativity has danced, sung, played and visually dazzled its way into our hearts throughout the year, culminating in stunningly beautiful Good Friday and Christmas productions, and the heart-warming extravaganza by our own KBC Kids, ‘He Knows My Name’.

Over the year I have grown from never deviating from the service plan, to saying “Jesus, take this service and do what you want”, then listening to Holy Spirit and moving where He wants to go. year started off with a bang thanks “ This to KBC Youth, with the Jan Slam event
being an awesome weekend with friends and heaps of fun! Not long after this my faith really grew during the time away at Awaken Camp where I was prayed over by my leaders and encountered God in a powerful way. Following this time I decided to be baptised at a 5pm Youth Service which was a proud moment for me, publicly committing my life to God for eternity! God has since been at work in my life, building me up and strengthening me in His image, showing His faithfulness in my life even emotionally and financially and I’ve since experienced things I would have never thought were possible for me. I’m learning how to be a leader both in and out of the church and was recently given the privilege of being appointed School Captain at Kenmore High for next year. I’m excited to see where God leads me as I head down that path in 2017. A big shout out to my youth leaders who have been with me all the way!”

We continue to strive for a positive influence and greater reach into the wider community through our weekly schools activities and weekend events which have allowed us to engage with thousands of young people this year. A highlight for us is sitting back during a youth service on a Sunday night seeing the youth band leading us in praise and worship, hearing a young person share how Jesus has impacted their life for the better and later seeing that same person down the front of church with their hand on the shoulder of a friend who is doing it tough, desiring to make a difference. For us, nothing compares to seeing God work in a young person’s life this way and we are thankful for all He has done and continues to do through KBC Youth.

What a year it has been across KBC Youth! 16 baptisms, a mission day trip to Cherbourg, outreach events with a mission team from the United States, Skate up events at the Bellbowrie Skate Park, Awaken Youth Camp, Jan Slam Weekend and more! We count it the biggest privilege to have just over 100 youth from 13 different Brisbane high schools call KBC Youth home every week. We have an amazing group of world changers who continually blow us away with their potential and, as leaders, we are grateful for the opportunity to invest into their lives.
Reaching nations
local and global snapshots in 2016 While KBC goes to the Nations the nations are also coming to us. We continue to see a thriving Taste of Australia Ministry reach out to hundreds of international students and migrants through English classes and specifically designed connection events. Our Tuesday English Class draws people from countries around the globe, many of which are closed to the Gospel. A highlight was a Buddhist couple wanting to know more about Christianity. They are completing a Discovery Bible Study and are very responsive.

Hope Collective Mission Team had a breakthrough year seeing Japanese people give their lives to Jesus, many physical healings and opportunities to pray and share Jesus in schools. The presentation, ‘My Father’s Eyes’, provided a boost for churches to engage in friendship evangelism with unreached communities.
Against the backdrop of IS death threats and forced church closures, Jesus continues to build His Church: eight baptisms, three new converts and 80 people attending the Easter service. Our prayer is that Pastor Ismail’s book, ‘Proclamation in Christianity and Islam: a Comparative Study’, will open dialogue about freedom of Christian expression in a hardening Muslim country.

A partner worker has launched a bold initiative ‘525’ to pray weekly for and within five years to plant 52 churches; one in each of the 52 Malaysian zones. This is a huge task with increasing Islamisation of Malaysia and hostility towards Christians.
God is growing our partnership with three KBC teams sent this year. They were able to assist the ‘Rumah Kommunity’ in leadership development and practical support within the hostel. Teams met with six local pastors for leadership development and spiritual encouragement and had the opportunity to teach English in the local Muslim schools.
Pastor Moses, partner worker to the Orang Asli, experienced an incredible miracle. After 20 years of ministry he was facing the possibility of being unable to continue the work of feeding stations, Bible schools and a children’s home due to financial pressures. God provided miraculously to allow the work to continue for years to come.
KBC continues to support Pastor Rez’s church in Cairo. Pastor Ric Benson visited Egypt to conduct marriage development for pastors and wives. This is a vital work enabling key leaders to continue their witness in majority Muslim communities.

We look forward to going to church and meeting with God and learning from His Word. We look forward to meeting with friends over a cup of coffee after the service and then going out with others for breakfast. We enjoy meeting up with fellow church family over a meal or at a picnic on the weekend. We really feel we have found our spiritual home and look forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for us as we move forward.”
Pastoral care visits and conversations are a constant feature of the role of District Pastors. Over the last nine months they have visited approximately 300 people with many more informal pastoral care/prayer ministry conversations on a Sunday. A team of six volunteers care for the elderly in our church family, regularly visiting particularly those not as mobile as they once were.

Things however really started to take off after we attended a Newcomers Lunch. Hearing the heart of the leadership and finding ways to get involved made a huge impact on our lives. Craig started to regularly meet with a few men and is now mentoring a younger man. We have been able to meet up with families socially and have been loved, supported and encouraged in many ways. I have joined the Kids Church team as a helper and have found it to be a blessing in my life in many ways.
Ensuring there is a point of contact, a welcoming smile, a listening ear and prayerful support are all part of the Community Care functions that have been fulfilled through the various teams this year. From our Host Team welcoming and engaging people with the ‘sermon before the sermon’ through to our Help Desk volunteers, Zone Leaders and Pastoral Carers, our great desire is that people would be assisted to find a rich sense of belonging and a deep family connection. We have increasingly become more intentional about collecting contact details from newcomers to assist them in integrating into the KBC family, and have been available as District Pastors to have that face to face pastoral visit when required. One email received from a newcomer said that it was so good to be looked after and felt like, as a newcomer wanting to connect, ‘a huge weight had been lifted from her’.

Finances - General The church year ends on 31 December each year. Income for the nine month period to 30 September was over 107% of budget, which is a wonderful result given that an additional $800,000 was given to Building for Life over and above our regular income. Expenditure has been carefully managed and is about 91% of pro-rata budget for the same period. Membership There were 462 members as at the end of September 2016, representing about 20% of our regular adult attendees. Our membership list is kept current via the membership renewal exercise that occurs each year. Staff A number of staff passed significant service milestones during the year and we thank them for their faithful contribution over many years. You make KBC what it is, you are the life within our walls. Without you KBC would be an empty shell. Thank you for being a part of our community.
