REFLECTION
Thesemesterhascametoanend,here'swhatIfeltaboutit, Eventhoughthemodulehasbeenfun,thiswasatoughsemesterfor myself. I think I could have done better, coming into the semester from a 9 month break of school, I overestimated my skillset and memory. I worked most of my time at the start of the semester and struggled catching up. I'm glad, as even though at phases where it was a horrible experience being overwhelmed with both work and studies, I have managed to pull through with in my opinion some greatstuffonbothendsofmyworkandstudies.
It puts a smile on my face when I see how far I have came as a designer. I managed to absorb and apply knowledge learnt from previoussemesterswhichincludesmyinternshipatAkitekAKIPRIMA.I am happy with the ideas I have produced and I wish to continue learningandfurtherimprovethem.
I am thankful of my family, peers, tutors that has made my time studyingmoreenjoyablealongtheway.Iambeyondexcitedtoenter the new semester again carrying my project 'teh tarik out of time' forwardandseetheheightsitcouldgo.

Cross-stitch weaving is one of many traditional techniquesusedlocallytoproduceSongkets.
We create contrast from the existing raw material of REXKL with the colorful yarns To beautify, as we enhance the appreciation for the historical building meanwhilepromotingournation'straditions.

Why is this so? I think..
Gentrific ation has opened up better alternati ves. Physical environment usually has poor hygiene and weather.
Increase in price has encouraged paying slightly more for cafes with better environment. Westernized world and the rise of social media has altered society's perception.

Origins of 'Kopitiam'
While kopitiams come in many different shapes and sizes, they are marked by the creative fusion foods that were invented by their progenitors: Hainanese chefs working for British households in 18th-century Malaya. There’s toast spread with a rich coconut jam called kaya, a chicken chop withgreenpeasanddarksoysauce,and,of course, the iconic coffee a light, buttery roastdeliciousenoughtowinoverlocalteadrinkers.Thebrewowesitsuniqueflavortoa combination of, locally-grown Liberica coffeebeansandcannedcondensedmilk.

This semester, I wanted to tackle a real world problem that is close to my heart. With this new discovery of koptiams facing a decline, I have decided to dive deeper and battle the root causes of gentrification and attempt to reinvent andgivingnewlifetoa'dying’culturalstaple.
Unfortunately, gentrification is unavoidable, how I see it, we canonlydoourbesttoencourageandupliftourtraditional habits and culture, and if the generations above appears arrogant and sees no point passing the torch, the youth sees no benefit in carrying on the old traditions, the Malaysiastorywillend.
It is a shame to me, because I think, truthfully, the people andourcountryitself,aretrulyahiddengemintheworld,a multiracialcommunitywithevensuchatragicdisputesuch asthe13thMayhashappened,we,Malaysiansarestillable tomoveonandrecoverandpractice'selamat’likewehave beenfordecades.
For this project, I have decided to design a space that will not only cater to any Malaysian, but in hopes bringing the communityandtheculturecloserthanbefore.
TheStinkof Modernisation
My phase I project, is an artwork which depicts the older generation kopitiam owners losing once their jobs/homes in this new era of business monopoly, if this goes on, the older generations do not only lose the opportunities they had. The younger generations will never have the opportunity to experience our bare Malaysian culture for what it is. We should not only look at the younger generations as the future of the country, but as a whole collective work together for a better tomorrow, bringing in the old, new, whatever that works great for the people.
