EDITOR’S COMMENT
Welcome to Kennedy’s Confectionery Trade Buyer 2010
Y
es, a crazy chicken was an unusual choice for a front cover, even I admit that. It did make you stop thinking ‘what the hell,’ right? Which is all part of our cunning plan. I’ll tell you a story. Our front cover originally had an image of the perfect luxury and most delicious looking chocolates – predictable? Then looking through this issue – it’s all about innovation and creativity and where to find some of the world’s most interesting confectionery products. And we are no chickens! You have to be tough to be in this fast moving and dynamic industry. There are two ways to go forward, build and strengthen the brand that fits with the key trends (also mentioned in this issue) or go wild and launch the most unusual product you can think of. We cover both of course and profile many of the excellent producers that not only will you find at ISM, but from all around the globe.

What will be the top 7 break-through products of 2010? Today’s mega-trends of health and wellness, convenience and sustainability are set to be high on the agenda for 2010. Seven core trends have been identified by Mintel that will have a global impact on new product development as manufacturers try to pique interest in new launches, while keeping shoppers comfortable. 1 Symbol overload: Consumers are hungry for nutritional facts. However, people feel confused and skeptical about different companies' nutrition symbols. In the UK nearly half (45%) of consumers find nutritional labels too cluttered. In response, more manufacturers will opt for clean, clear facts on front-of-pack statements in 2010. 2. Sodium reduction: Poised as the next major health movement, for example 35% of UK consumers now consider low salt content when buying food.

What will be the top 7 break-through products of 2010? << Continued From Editor’s Comment 3. Origins: Consumers still want products with recognisable origins and those that haven't been shipped too far. In the UK 46% of consumers buy products from their own country when they can and 43% of US consumers claim they buy local when possible. In 2010, the definition of "local" will expand, becoming more practical for major companies to use and for mainstream shoppers to purchase. 4. Simple made special: Ready to get a kick out of buying "ordinary" products like soap and juice? Well, in 2010 chic packaging and premium positioning will turn today's grudge purchases into enjoyable events. The recent trend towards boutique-inspired packaging highlights how manufacturers will make the mundane a little more special next year. 5. Colour coding for convenience: Cluttered supermarket shelves making it hard to find a favourite cereal flavour or shampoo variety? Not anymore. To help shoppers make faster choices, more manufacturers will colour-code their products in 2010. In the UK, 45% of consumers claim to compare products by their labels often, and nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) say they want colour-coded packaging, which also helps brands stand out. 6. Iconic budget brands: Private label "brands" are starting to look a lot more like brands. As consumers cut spending because of the recession, smart marketers ramped up promotions for their private label lines. Many shoppers now equate private labels with national brands and value them as such. In 2010, low cost, high quality private labels will thrive. 7. Gen Y cleans up: Generation Y (born between 1977 and 1994) consumers now make up 21% of the global population. While they grew up with tried and trusted established brands, this generation is now calling out for products of their own. Looking at the cleaning sector, there aren't a wealth of Gen Y-focused cleaners on the market at present

Signs of recovery in UK mergers and acquisitions on the horizon In 2009, the number of food and drink sector deals (mergers and acquisitions) involving UK businesses declined by 30% to just 70 transactions, according to figures analysed by sector experts Grant Thornton UK LLP. This contrasts with 2007 when in a buoyant market there were 132 reported deals. Nevertheless, there are signs of a recovery in mergers and acquisitions and Grant Thornton are cautiously optimistic for 2010. "M&A activity in the food and drink sector was extremely depressed in 2009 both in terms of volume and value. Compared to the buoyant market conditions in 2007, deal volumes were down by 47% and over half of the transactions completed related to acquisitions from insolvent companies or businesses in distress." commented Phil Jackson, Head of Food Sector at Grant Thornton. Underlying a growing optimism, share prices for UK food companies have rallied through 2009 and on average have recovered half of their losses incurred since the end of 2007. "Many food businesses are reporting significantly improved profits in 2009 as the impact of food price inflation has reduced and the benefits of cost and efficiency savings have come through. The increase in share prices of the quoted companies reflects this." Jackson explained. "The recovery in profitability is bringing buyers back and encouraging potential sellers to test the market". The ongoing takeover battle for Cadbury and the anticipated sales of Gu and Kettle Chips reinforce this
Tesco launch Valentine’s Day Gifts Tesco UK have launched new confectionery range especially for Valentine’s Day, featured in their Real Food magazine. Among the products vying for UK hearts this year are the ‘Hollow Love Bears’ (£1·99/100g), ‘Jelly Beans in Acetate Heart’ (99p/100g), and the quirky 99p ‘Love Bugs’.
view. Another factor influencing privately owned businesses to consider selling is the concern that the rate of Capital Gains Tax might be aligned with income tax. Whilst valuation multiples will be lower than 2007, the prospect of returns being decimated by up to 50% tax instead of the current 18% is a major driver for a sale. "As M&A levels pick up, it is likely that consolidation in private label dominant categories such as bakery, fresh produce and dairy will predominate. Highly leveraged groups may also gauge that the timing is now right to sell some assets to reduce debt. In addition foreign buyers will be attracted by the relative weakness of sterling," Jackson concludes.
Aldi present their ‘less than 70 calories’ cereal bars’ Aldi, is well known across Europe for their range of quality products at low prices. New to the UK stores for 2010 are Fruit Chews and Mint Chews, 79p per pack from Dominion. ALDI will be join the industry shift toward healthier choices products with ‘Benefit Less Than 70 Cal Cereal Bars’ that do exactly what they say on the packet, retailing at £1.29/pack.

Kinnerton ‘Characters’ enter the Sugar Confectionery Market. Kinnerton Confectionery (UK) has established a new division of the c o m p a n y c a l l e d ‘ T h e G re a t Character Candy Company’. To support this, Carl Richardson has joined Kinnerton after 14 years experience at Mr Lucky Bags to head up the new project.
This division will focus on developing an innovative range of licensed sugar confectionery products targeted primarily at everyday sales. Carl Richardson said ‘this is a fantastic project which brings together my skills in sugar confectionery with Kinnerton’s strong presence and
distribution in the market place. I am sure that together we will quickly establish significant sector innovation for our customers, so driving incremental sales for the group.’ The first products will be available to the market early 2010. Kinnerton will be at ISM in the UK pavilion.
Bigger players look to Kosher Certified According to the KLBD in the UK, the Kosher Division of the London Beth Din, Mars have chosen to certify some of their products by opting for the Kosher logo on some of their leading brands including Mars, Snickers, Ripple, Minstrels, Galaxy and Trackers. The KLBD told Kennedy’s that there is an increasing trend for manufacturers to opt for the KLBD logo on their confectionery bars. It’s also reported that Mackays Preserves and Marmalades are ready to hit the high street globally with the Kosher logo as well. Returning to the British Pavilion at ISM for the fourth year, Florette Hyman, Marketing Director of KLBD, commented, “ISM has been key for us in driving awareness of what we do and the benefits of having Kosher Certification.” KLBD, is 150 years old, under the Court of the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, and is claimed to be the oldest, Kosher Certification Authority in the world. KLBD have certified many leading international brands, including Drambuie, The Glenrothes, Tio Pepe Sherry, Jean Marc XO Vodka, MARS, Bendicks of Mayfair (Storck), Burtons, Cadbury’s, and Rivita to name but a few.
KLBD currently certify some 1000 companies in 48 Countries and also certifies 130 c a t e r e r s , restaurants and shops in the UK. The USA is also a major market for k o s h e r confectionery and this is where KLBD certified companies have the opportunity to expand their export sales, by exhibiting under the KLBD banner. KLBD told Kennedy’s they also work closely with distributors in Israel, USA and Europe, to promote certified companies and forge links between distributors and manufacturers. The company will be in the British Pavilion at ISM HALL 4.2 – STAND J17.

Elizabeth Shaw Re-branding Hailed a Success Elizabeth Shaw (UK) est. 1881, had a rejuvenating year in 2009 with a major packaging redesign. The company re-launched a large part of their existing product portfolio in 2009, projecting their chocolates to a wider audience. The quality remains, and the classic Elizabeth Shaw signature has been updated, with striking new colours and even the chocolates themselves have been reformed. The company selected two of the company’s most recognisable brands to receive most of the attention. “Our main aim in looking at the re-designs was to invest in our existing products,” says Managing Director, Malachy McReynolds. Famous Names, the most popular brand of liqueur chocolates in the UK, was bought completely up-to-date with a reformulated chocolate shape. A café liqueur selection pack was introduced alongside extended pack sizes. For chocolates often bought as gifts, giving consumers a greater choice of price points makes the product even more relevant across a wider range of
occasions. Mint Crisp was another of the brands receiving a makeover. A challenge, considering how popular the existing branding was with the core consumer group. However, the new colours have proved a great success. Another key aspect of the makeover is the foiled presentation. Their octagonal pack stays, now the new ‘C’ window shape giving the packaging a new individuality. Another important aspect was the need to reduce the packaging environmental footprint. The materials in the Mint Crisp packaging have also been adapted to use less plastic as well as creating a strong visual identity. Elizabeth Shaw also introduced their New Mint Cream in 2009, a uniquely shaped treat packaged in a new tumble-filled structure; adding something entirely new to the line-up. The innovation goes on into 2010, with dark and milk Mint Crisp becoming available in a 7-piece pack. “With our new line up for 2010, we hope we will be giving consumers
something new but familiar,” McReynolds continues. ISM, stand: G23.

With other products such as Sun Fruits and Aussie Natural Glucose Bag-a-Lollies popular down under, Allsep’s big new venture is developing export lines. Elegance Confectionery bring best sellers to ISM “The customer’s delight is what we want to achieve, not just satisfaction,” is part of Elegance Confectionery’s mission statement. Kennedy’s have worked with Elegance, one of the fastest growing confectionery companies in Syria and know that now this isn’t just a mission statement, it’s become reality. Double Pop® License ApS seek new license holders Double Pop® License ApS (Denmark) is currently looking to work with new partners from around the world. Kim Jacobsen, CEO of the company, told Kennedy’s that around 50 years ago he would return home from school to help his parents with their sweet shop in Tivoli Park, Copenhagen. The candy coated, chocolate covered popcorn on a stick was synonymous with the park; and production continued when Jacobsen eventually took over the small factory. Visitors to the park wanted to take the treat home with them, and he received regular enquiries from across the world from importers wanting to represent the product. Today patents for Double Pop® have been applied for in 52 countries. Jacobsen has done his research and designed a worldpatented machine, perfect for making caramel coated popcorn bars. It keeps the popcorn mass stable for long enough to be compressed into the bar and is capable of
producing up to 8000 an hour. Double Pop® is also claimed healthier than other snack bars; the caramelised popcorn centre means it’s low in fat and high in fibre. “The marketing strategies are in place and ‘Double Pop® will become a recognised brand worldwide,” claims Jacobsen. ISM Hall 11.1 A022.

THOMAS TUNNOCK
Thomas Tunnock prepare to add new treat to traditional line Since the 1950s Tunnock’s have been supplying Scotland, and more recently the rest of the world, with qualty chocolate-covered products. Now exporting to over thirty countries, things have changed hugely since Tom Tunnock first bought a shop in Uddingston, near Glasgow in 1890 and started supplying the town with flour confectionery. The first export was to Canada in 1957, where the Scottish treats were savoured. Nowadays, you can purchase a Tunnock’s Teacake as far away as Japan. In 2010, the company is still expanding rapidly with efforts constantly in place to grow the export market even further. The proportion of the world where you would struggle to locate a Tunnock’s product is shrinking, and the popularity is growing, becoming more and more modern. Tunnock’s boasts a strong following on the social networking website Facebook – inspiring three groups, the largest, ‘Tunnock’s Appreciation Society”, has an astonishing 1,068 members. The Caramel Wafer Biscuit is exactly the same today as it was when it was first created in 1950, the strength of the brand’s ability is to mix tradition with modernity. Tunnock’s tells Kennedy’s that a lot of investment has gone into the company recently, with new plant and equipment in the production line and a new product due out later in 2010. A new face in the traditional line-up is sure to cause a stir in the confectionery industry; Tunnock’s is so well known for it’s existing products that a new launch is
certain to attract much attention. Only a limited few are yet to sample it and very few details have been released, even to Kennedy’s! Today, the company is still a family-run business, currently headed by Boyd Tunnock. His daughters and son-in-law also have vital roles, pushing into the fourth generation of Tunnock’s. Around 600 people are employed and every part of the product is made on site, 100m from the original bakery. With major plans coming up in 2010, this could be Tunnock’s year. Judging by the international popularity of the current range, such as Caramel Wafers, Teacakes and Snowballs, Tunnock’s new product is poised to make a global impact. Tunnocks will be exhibiting at ISM – Hall: 4.2 Stand: J39. With such a strong product line and continued expansion, their stand is a must-visit.

GOLDEN CASKET
Kennedy’s spoke to Douglas Rae about the advances of Golden Casket’s formidable confectionery range since the company was established in 1959 Established by Douglas Rae in 1959, Golden Casket has emerged as a confectionery heavyweight in the UK, with brands such as Millions and Halfpounders sweets fast becoming household names throughout Britain. This family-owned company has also systematically acquired other confectionery brands over the years, including Buchanan’s and J & A Ferguson’s, to broaden its range and its appeal. “We have built up some very strong brands over the years and a lot of this is to do with the unique nature of our products,” Rae told us. “For example, Gibb’s sweets, which we have owned for over 20 years, are striped by hand by the very best people. These sweets are often referred to as ‘jewels’ by customers and have also been described as the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of sweets. Our chocolates are produced to the highest quality standards whether they target premium or mainstream markets.” Fudgy Wudgy is another of the company’s leading lines – a small fudge bar that is sold throughout the UK. As well as manufacturing lines the company also markets some exclusive lines too. The integrity and quality of Golden Casket’s product range is one of the company’s greatest assets, along with its strategic approach to business, which has helped it to secure strong support from all retail markets. Gibb’s boiled sweets, for example, target niche retail markets, while Halfpounders are often referred to as the independent retailer’s ‘own-label’, while Millions has a wide distribution network among private and multiple retailers. Similarly, the premium chocolate brand, J & A Ferguson’s is positioned as an exclusive brand, targeting independent shops, while Buchanan’s
is strongly favoured by the multiples. “There is something for everybody,” said Rae. “We target adults and children from all walks of life and try to make our products as accessible as possible. All of our brands are strong players in their own markets.” Golden Casket has also focused on increasing the distribution network of Ferguson’s finest chocolates beyond the Scottish borders. “Ferguson’s is Scotland’s oldest and finest chocolate manufacturer dating back to 1794 and we are proud to own it,” said Rae. “However, we want to build on its traditional distribution areas.” Fergusons extended their range at the end of 2009 to include a range of 10 glass collectible mini jars - all traditional boiled sweets in natural colorus and flavors. Also there’s a range of three 113g gift bags of fudges and scottish tablet. www.fergusonschocolates.co.uk The company has extended the distribution of its Fairtrade range, which was launched in 2007. The confectionery is made from sugar sourced from the Kasinthula Cane Growers Association in Malawi "I feel that it is only right that everyone should benefit from the Fruits Of The World, and we can make a big difference by offering growers a fair price. Our range is one of everyday sweets at everyday prices – fudges, toffees, boiled sweets and mints. We supply Fairtrade sweets to numerous EU countries now and our distribution is growing all the time,” said Rae. www.millionssweets.co.uk

CHOCOLATE STORIES
New Dutch venture tells a story with chocolate Marc Truyens of the new company, Chocolate Stories of Amsterdam, tells us his story of why he thinks his new venture will be a success. Chocolate Stories make moulded pieces to form individual letters of the alphabet The letters theme is a message in itself and the product can be bought and delivered to order. Marc Truyens said: "The idea is exciting – the current chocolate market is boring and all based on the same thing. It's moving the niche market on. For us, we are looking to the 'mood' market. With excellent suppliers and the chocolate letters, we are tapping an open market.” (Holland sells around 40 million chocolate products every year.) With Valentine's Day approaching, the 'Heart Letter' is sure to be a popular addition to the traditional 26 characters. The cupid celebration 'letter' is the instantly recognisable open heart with its arrow. Valentine’s Day is obviously the pivotal story line for lovers and chocolate, but the company believes that a message in chocolate is a love token all year round – could this be the next generation of sending a message, rather than with flowers? Marc says it tells the story of the love letter: "Stories are made from words, words are made from letters. Chocolate Stories is relaunching the chocolate letter worldwide. Expressing yourself in chocolate creates a very personal message ”chocolate telling a story isn't just a romanticised concept confined to the 14th February. Another fun concept is the chocolate Skulletjes – obviously a top idea for Halloween. It's bizarre, unique and lots of fun. The letter or letters are presented in a metallic look box, which can also serve as a photo frame, cleverly designed as a keepsake. From mid-2010 you can add numbers and other symbols into your message to mix even more personality into your chocolate.

MILLIONS
April 2010 sees a big change to Millions as they will have no artificial colours and go natural The enduring popularity of Millions means that it remains one of the UK’s leading confectionery brands today. Owned by Golden Casket, these tiny, chewy sweets are available in a wide variety of options, including weigh-out jars, gift jars, pre packs, tubes, shakers, chocolate bars and mini tubes. Innovations Millions rarely stand still. With a host of new innovations, flavours, and packing options constantly being introduced. For example, in 2007 Millions Shakers were launched in resealable packs – and are now available in six flavours. 2007 saw the introduction of Millions milk chocolate bars which contain the trademark tiny, tasty, chewy sweets. The bars were developed in response to a great deal of consumer feedback and as a result of this, two flavour varieties were introduced – strawberry and orange.
In 2008 Millions moved into completely new territory with the introduction of a strawberry yoghurt flavour, available in 65g tube packs. As well as being vegetarian approved, it contains real fruit juice. The strawberry flavoured yoghurt sweet also contains 15% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium. Jelly Belly
Jelly Belly to debut new flavours at ISM
Following six years of determined and effective international expansion, Jelly Belly (USA) have developed a brand of new jelly bean products marketed towards more regional tastes and preferences which will be at ISM this year.
With a new factory in Rayong, Thailand, completed last year, the refreshing new flavours including Chile Mango, Green Tea and Lychee, are very much targeted towards Asian and Latin markets and will be introduced in the USA. “It’s been a very exciting and very busy few years,” explains Sharon Duncan, Vice President of Jelly Belly International. “The genius of Jelly Belly is in its ability to meet local preferences and expectations within a global market place.” It was 1869 when Gustav Goelitz arrived in America from Germany as a young man and began making candy. His brother Albert joined him and the family business was born. Back then, hard candy, stick candy, mint drops and lozenges were en vogue, and it wasn’t until 1976 that their first gourmet jelly bean was created. The bean caused a flavour revolution, with even Ronald Reagan becoming a devotee. His move to the White House was a remarkable catalyst, sparking the events that catapulted Jelly Belly to
a world-wide audience. Today, Gustav’s great-grandson Herman Rowland Sr. is Chairman, and seven children and grandchildren work in the business. Jelly Belly prides itself on its ability to be on the cutting edge of flavour development and the ability to be flexible in a globally varied market. “High quality innovation is the company’s benchmark,” Duncan continues. “We welcome new ideas, so the product is constantly refreshing itself.”

Jelly Belly
With flavours such as Cappuccino, Pina Colada and Buttered Corn available, it’s not surprising that Jelly Belly have built a strong reputation for authentic flavours. The dramatic taste is produced using real fruit juices, purees and natural flavours. The 50 permanent varieties have recently been re-formulated, now containing more natural flavours than ever before, and the company is now keen to stake a claim in the ever-expanding free-from market. “With Jelly Belly Beanaturals®, we have produced a jelly bean with no artificial flavours or colours for those consumers who want free-from confectionery.” Duncan explains. “Sport Beans®, the dedicated sports performance jelly bean, is now made entirely from natural ingredients, while at the same time delivering a hugely effective sport nutritional product”. The Sunkist® Fruit Gems have also been improved, now containing all natural flavours. New graphics have refreshed the presentation of the line-up, which focuses largely on ease and convenience. Re-sealable pouches and flip-top boxes have been developed, perfect for consumers on the go. “We set our
sights on researching what new markets want. Meeting those requirements with a quality product that does justice to the brand is our challenge,” says Duncan. With the beans available in an impressive range of colours as well as flavours, they have a fantastic novelty factor beyond confectionery. Used by artist Pete Rocha as an innovative medium to create over fifty fantastic portraits, each requiring many thousands of beans, the product has a strong sense of fun. Catch them at ISM, Hall 10.2, Stand F071.

FIESTA
‘Fiesta’ translates from Spanish as ‘any festival or celebration’, and Fiesta S.A., one of the best-known confectionery companies in Spain, tells Kennedy’s just why they have much to celebrate Established in 1965, Fiesta has grown into a substantial multinational company, now exporting to over 25 countries. The distribution and sales are managed by General de Distribución Fiesta sa SL (GDF), a move made necessary by Fiesta’s ever-expanding delivery network to around 50,000 traditional outlets. GDF has 21 stores across Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. With candy flavours including ‘Chillies’ – a rubber, spicy, chilli-shaped sweet described by Fiesta as ‘an extreme sensation’ and ‘Euros’ – forget chocolate coins, these are crafted from jellies – it’s easy to understand why Fiesta is so popular. The ‘Kojak’ lollipop is the most well known product, now available in an wide range of flavours from watermelon to ice cream, and filled with gum. New products for 2010 include the Fiesta® Fruit Jellies. Juan Mayoral, export director at Fiesta, exclusively told Kennedy’s, "The Fiesta® Fruit Jellies are an exquisite assortment of fruit jellies that are delicate in texture and delicious to taste. Fiesta S.A.’s recipe for its Fruit Jellies commands the finest all natural ingredients, using fruit juice (from apples, grapes and strawberries), pectin (a natural source of soluble dietary fibre extracted from fruits) as well as its premium selection of natural flavours: raspberry, apricot, pear, black currant, pineapple and orange.”
The Fiesta® Fruit Jellies are placed individually on an elegant tray that is packed inside a 200g assortment box, 12 boxes per case. A floor stand shipper with 48 -200g boxes is also available. Fiesta® Fruit Jellies are NAF NAC and a gelatine free and gluten free product. Also brand new this year is Electroshock™, a chewy candy with a sour filling available in an individually wrapped XL size. The product is introduced in a Strawberry flavour (of course with natural flavours and colours) and each sour filled cable is individually wrapped in a 75cm long pack, with a net weight of 80, presented in a 36 count vertical display box. Like the Fiesta® Fruit Jellies, Electroshock™ is a gelatine free product."

In 2009 confectioners were no chickens!
Even with the troubles that haunted the great financially troubled year of 2009 with cash strapped consumers, still, innovation remained a driving force of the international confectionery industry with 1000’s of new products coming to market. 2009 was a year of huge imagination and creativity throughout the internatonal confectionery industry. There were so many launches that we’ve struggled to squeeze them all in. So what were the most innovative products from around the world last year? We attempted to answer this question for you. We asked David Jago, Trend and Innovation Director at Mintel who has handpicked a selection of what we believe to be some of the most innovative confectionery products that were launched last year. Products were sourced on their aspects of originality, positioning, formulation, pack design, price and shear courage! It’s fair to say that some products appear to me more PR stunts than a genuinely edible or marketable product. Never the less, they set the trends and it’s their shear creativity that drives the industry forward to new markets. Sadly (in the case of some of our examples), we found a few products to be plainly ridiculous, but this fearless attitude is just what makes the industry so vibrant. In the pages to follow check out the most innovative products month by month and at the end of the section we could not help but write a bit extra on some of the most daring products than won our acclaim. A general trend we have noticed is that companies were been keen to push the flavour boundaries, with increasingly unusual tastes in chocolate and candy, ‘sweet is now not sweet enough’. The more weird and wonderful, the better, it seems. Lotte, we noticed, made a bold statement in April 09 with a new ‘Vegetable X Fruit’
gummy candy range, available in Tomato & Apple and Carrot & Lemon varieties. Wrigley’s were not to be left out when in May they launched their Sangria flavour chewing gum range with a Tangerine Tea gum to follow in October. In comparison, Alnatura’s Chilli Cherry Chocolate seems tame! Novelty products also appear to be high on the Richter scale when in May, the Candy and Toy Factory launched ‘Biz Chicken Chat’ loose on the market, described as a ‘squawking chicken with egg shaped candy’ (pictured), truly an eggciting launch (sorry). Now stress parents could purchase chocolate created specifically for them from the company Meybona (Austria); called ‘Gob-Stuffer Choc for Stressed Parents’. That’s it, it’s the answer to all parent’s stress, wish it was that easy. 2009 continued with a steady flow of health-conscious offerings. Many of the new products reflected this, but can the metabolism-boosting benefits of green tea really work when combined with chocolate? ‘Crunky’ from Lotte gives the concept a whirl. And, if you want to enjoy chocolate with none of the calories, and snuff is your thing, you could find ‘Le Whiff’ (France) from Labogroup , you simply inhale the chocolate. Yes really! Tongues are no not needed and chocolate is clearly not for eating? Finally at the end of this section we selected the most curious products, some of which were quite ingenious. It’s sad and true that the more crazy products tend to enjoy the most publicity, but fear not, there are good reasons why people stick to their known brands, find out why and read on. Continued >>

The most innovative! Hunger Alleviating Gum Kracie Foods’ (Japan) Obesity and weight management have become important issues in recent years, with consumers voicing concern over their weight, health and lifestyle. Satiety has been topping the weight control product trends, and chewing gum has long been considered as a means for curbing appetite. Kracie Foods’ (Japan) new Grapefruit & Soda flavour gum product is said to create a feeling of fullness when consumed, due its combination of ingredients, most notably glucose and konjac powder. The glucose raises the body’s sugar levels, with konjac powder which is used in Japan for generations by those wishing to lose weight. The root extract can expand by up to 200 times its original volume – combined with the high glucose levels, this is claimed to achieve a feeling of satiety, helping consumers forget their hunger. The most innovative! Reversed Chocolate Morinaga Japan
Valentine’s Day usually involves men forgetting to buy chocolates and flowers for the special lady in their lives. However, in Japan, things are remarkably different. It’s only the women who give presents – usually chocolate – to most of the men in their lives, not just loved ones. ‘Giri choco’ is the obligatory gift to colleagues and friends, and ‘honmei choco’ is for the man she is romantically involved with. Morinaga, the Japanese based confectionery company, looked to reverse this tradition. Three chocolate lines – Dars, Carre de Chocolat and Koeda – are now available in reversed, mirror image packaging; marketed to men for women on February 14th. The reversed lettering makes the product stand out on the shelves, and also feature a blue ribbon with ‘Thanks to You’ printed, allowing the product to be given to most people, not just loved ones. Each pack costs US$1.33 and is marketed towards trend-conscious men and women.

EDITOR’S CHOICE - COMPANY PROFILE
The Jelly Bean Factory
Aran Candy take the jelly bean back to nature
Kennedy’s talks to Peter and Richard Cullen, owners of Aran Candy Ltd (The Jelly Bean Factory®) of Dublin Ireland, who have been producing jelly beans for over twelve years.
The company continues to enjoy solid growth and has been housed in its new premises since 2008. The Jelly Bean Factory® currently produces about 12 million jelly beans a day. Over 90% of production is exported to around 46 markets as far afield as Canada, Australia and the Far East. Sales in the USA are under ‘The Jelly Bean Planet®’ brand The Jelly Bean Factory® can now claim that every single bean from Mango to Blueberry Pie, Pomegranate to Strawberry, will be all-natural in 2010 and contain 5% Fruit Juice. Their range has over 36 flavours with no artificial colours or flavours and suitable for both vegetarians and celiacs. No gelatine or gluten is used in production. Nut allergy sufferers can enjoy gourmet jelly beans, safe in the knowledge that they have been produced in a nut free factory. The products are halal compliant and contain no GMO ingredients. In 2009, The Jelly Bean Factory® launched a range of new pack sizes; from the handy pocket-sized 25g and 50g sachets right up to a ‘Monster’ 4.2kg jar. An exciting gift range followed, with bean-inspired alarm clocks, (complete with 120g of Gourmet Beans) a cosmetics bag and an embossed 500g tin selection with 12 popular flavours. 2010 will see the brand go “natural”. Buyers can see the new range at ISM with new pack formats catering for a wide variety of trade categories from gift, multiple grocery to travel retail. In addition to the “natural” development, up to 5% Fruit Juice is being added to the fruit flavours. This quality move will put The Jelly Bean Factory® brand, ahead of many of its competitors. Peter Cullen says “The fantastic taste of our new “natural” gourmet jelly beans is just like eating the real fruit. More innovation is to come from an ongoing product development programme in The Jelly Bean Factory ®”
The Jelly Bean Factory ® is pleased to support developing countries by using “FAIRTRADE®” sugar in its new box range. Richard Cullen says “We are pleased with our new branded developments, and it’s clear that The Jelly Bean Factory® brand will continue to grow from strength to strength with retailers and consumers alike. The modern image of the re-branding, undertaken in 2009, is now in place and supports our continued growth and innovation. In 2009 we introduced “The Jelly Bean Factory” destination points in a number of major UK department stores, and following positive consumer feedback we plan to extend our innovative merchandising at retail level” Find out more and meet The Jelly Bean Factory® team at ISM, Hall 11.1, Stand: J29.

To help promote UK confectionery, Kennedy’s Confectionery Trade Buyer will be available from UK stands at ISM - Over 2500 copies
The UK is set to show off its strengths at ISM 2010 with a strong showing of some 55 companies all looking to build on strong international sales. The UK remains one of the world's major per-capita consumers of confectionery, with the market valued at £4.5 billion. And the outlook market remains positive. Trends in low sugar and natural products continue, whilst the private label category offers increasing competition to branded products. UK expertise is recognised internationally, as UK exports continue to boom. Latest annual export figures show UK exports of sugar confectionery rose to £65.2 million and chocolate sales reaching an impressive £154.9 million. Sweet biscuits account for a further £95.2 million of exports. Building on this, ISM provides an ideal stage to showcase a strong mix of UK companies from traditional shortbread and fudge, to character novelty confectionery and gift tins. Amongst many iconic brands, the UK pavilion at ISM UK Pavilion organiser
will this year feature a number of new exhibitors including Thistle Products, taking classic treats and giving them an imaginative twist. Their award winning range includes handbaked premium biscuits and oatcakes. New for 2010 is Farrah’s traditional preserves, biscuit drums, gift boxes of candies and chocolate bars that have been tastefully re-branded and an attractive new box of chocolates. Family owned Maxons Ltd, traditional boiled sweet manufacturers and producers of Sherbet, will be exhibiting perennial favourites from “Grannie’s Herbal Tablets” to Pear Drops, Yorkshire Mixture and newer flavours such as Cola Fizzballs and Sour Apples. The new Fosters Kiln Jar premium range from Chambers Candy has proved a sound success with independent retailers throughout the UK. Chambers now aim to find
new customers worldwide for their range of traditional British favourites, all made with no artificial colours or flavours at ISM. With current exchange rates, sourcing from the UK is now a very attractive proposition for international buyers. UK companies have seized this opportunity to exhibit at ISM. PS8, the organisers of the UK pavilion, will be pulling out all the stops to ensure a very productive week in Cologne. We are delighted to feature all of the UK companies in partnership with Kennedy’s over the next few pages and are confident that you will find something of interest. Huntly Aberdeenshire AB54 8JX +44 (0)1466 792086 Contact: Scott Kelman Email: info@deans.co.uk www.deans.co.uk Stand: H11 The story begins in 1975 at the heart of Helen Dean’s kitchen in the small town of Huntly, North East Scotland. Business grew steadily during the 1980s with more and more customers buying the Dean’s product. Later in 1992, Dean’s moved to a new purpose built bakery, which has since been expanded on four occasions. Although the business now operates on a much larger scale, it still maintains its home-baked trademark on all products. Building on the Dean’s brand strength and recognition for its award
winning shortbread, the business has now started to stretch into new areas with the launch of five indulgent home-style oat biscuits; Stem Ginger, Apple & Cranberry, Coconut and Treacle, Sultana and Heather Honey and Original. I was buying free from cakes and saw the badly presented and poor quality offerings at huge premiums in the supermarkets. When I took over the Mrs Crimble’s brand we focused on product quality and gave the brand a modern, high quality look that compared well to any normal cake brand you could buy. Then we priced fairly and relative to standard products and the brand took off quickly establishing its lines amongst the best sellers in the ‘Free From area’. Mrs Crimbles is free from wheat and gluten. One product, Mrs Crimble’s Choc Macs, is now rated as the best selling free from cake in the country and the 15th best selling cake of any kind in the UK.. In Scotland the name Tunnock’s is synonymous with products of the very highest quality. The business was founded by Thomas Tunnock in 1890 and four generations later it is still an independent, family run company employing almost 600 people in a state of the art production centre in Uddingston, Lanarkshire only yards from the original premises. Tunnock’s is famous for a very distinctive range of biscuits and confectionery. Across the UK no supermarket, convenience store or corner shop would be regarded as complete without the instantly identifiable pack and wrapper designs of Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers, Tunnock’s Tea Cakes, Tunnock’s Caramel Logs and Tunnock’s Snowballs. By maintaining their quality standards down through the decades Tunnock’s have built a reputation for excellence and it is fair to say that no other comparable product range is held in more affection or commands more brand loyalty. Many believe that the worldwide popularity of Tunnock’s products is due to the huge number of people of Scottish origin and ancestry across the globe but the truth of the matter is that quality is appreciated by everyone. If Tunnock’s makes them feel a little bit Scottish, there’s nothing wrong with that.
