Controlling the spread of infectious bacteria and germs is not only important while at home but also when you visit your dentist. Reducing bacteria and germs in the mouth is far more than just simply brushing your teeth twice a day. It extends to other hygiene habits to keep harmful bacteria and germs away that could not only affect your oral health by your overall health and well-being.

With concerns about COVID-19 (coronavirus), there are specific things you should be doing, even while at home including:

1. Frequently Wash Your Hands: Wash your hands with warm water and soap and scrub gently for several minutes before rinsing. Hand washing should occur when you first arrive home from being outdoors, at the grocery store, or from seeing your dentist. You should also wash your hands after handling grocery bags, delivery boxes, and other items that you bring into the home.

2. Close the Toilet Lid Before Flushing: When you flush the toilet, the water molecules can spray bacteria, germs, and fecal matter out of the toilet and into the air. By closing the lid, you keep these things contained in the toilet where they belong.

3. Replace Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months: Get into the habit of replacing your toothbrush every 3 months. After about 3 months, germs and bacteria can become more prevalent on the bristles.

4. Use an Anti-Bacteria/Germ Fighting Mouthwash: To keep germs and bacteria in check inside your mouth, make sure to use an anti-bacteria/germ fighting mouthwash twice a day after brushing. You can even gargle with it to kill germs and bacteria on your tonsils.

5. Wear a Face Covering When Leaving the Home: Always wear some type of protection on your face that covers your mouth and nose when leaving home. You should keep the face covering on when in public areas, the grocery store, or while waiting to see your dentist.

6. Don’t Rub Your Face or Eyes: It can be hard when your nose itches or you need to rub your eyes, but don’t do it when you are away from home. When at home, wash your hands with soap and water first, then you can scratch your nose. Instead of rubbing your eyes, take a facecloth and wet it in cool water and apply it to the eye. Remember to wash your hands afterward a second time too.

7. Clean Your Invisalign Aligners/Mouthguard/Retainer: If you are using Invisalign, or have a mouthguard or retainer, make sure to rinse these is cool water. You can also take and gently brush these things with your toothbrush and toothpaste to help remove bacteria and germs.
