When you walk down the dental care aisle are your local drug store, pharmacy or grocery store, one thing you quickly notice is there are many different brands and types of toothpaste. Some offer added whitening, others help with sensitive teeth, and yet others provide added “anti-cavity protection. Deciding which toothpaste you should use depends upon your dental care needs. Some people choose whitening toothpastes to help address issues with staining. However, what they may not realize is these toothpastes can contain abrasive additives to help remove stains. These same additives can also slowly destroy the protective enamel layer of the teeth.

Prolonged used of whitening toothpastes can lead to sensitivity. To address tooth sensitivity, then you have to switch to a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. As you can see, sometimes using one particular toothpaste can lead to other dental issues. Ideally, the best way to decide which toothpaste is best for you is to talk to your dentist and dental hygienist. They are familiar with your oral care and what would be the best toothpaste to use. In addition to their recommendations, look for toothpaste brands which feature either the American Dental Association (ADA) or Canadian Dental Association (CDA) seal of approval. These seals mean the toothpaste has been put through rigorous testing to ensure it meets the association’s standards and quality. Besides selecting the right toothpaste, your brushing technique is equally important. You can have the right toothpaste, but if you do not brush correctly, you could still get cavities and experience other dental problems, like gingivitis. Proper brushing techniques require you to use small circular motions to remove plaque and food particles from the teeth. You should never scrub back and forth or apply a heavy amount of pressure to your teeth. Doing so can actually damage the gum tissue and the enamel on the teeth. Furthermore, you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes. The best way to do this is to break your teeth down into quadrants like your dental hygienist. When they clean your teeth during a dental visit, they start with one side of your mouth and slowly clean each quadrant. For example, you would start brushing your top left front teeth and do so for fifteen seconds. Then you would switch and brush the back side of the top left teeth and brush another fifteen Website: https://www.kennedysquaredental.com/

seconds. Next, switch to the lower left front teeth and repeat this process until all your teeth are brushed. Lastly, remember to brush the tops of the teeth. Good brushing techniques are further supported by remembering to floss at least once a day, normally in the evening to remove any trapped plaque and particles caught between the teeth.
