Halloween is a fun fall celebration where kids and adults dress up in costumes and enjoy a wide range of sweets, treats, and candy. This holiday also is a time when everyone should be thinking about how all these treats will impact their dental health. It is okay to eat candy and other Halloween treats as long as you have a plan in place.

Tip #1: Limit Snacking on Sweets Letting your child snack all day on the pile of candy they got is not a good idea. It is also not a good idea to constantly snack on other sweet treats. If you do, you will have a buildup up bacteria that creates plaque, as well as acids that eat through the enamel on your teeth.

Tip #2: Eat Sticky Treats with Care Gummy bears, taffy, caramel apples, and other sticky treats can remain on the teeth longer. As such, the longer it remains, the more it can increase risks for tooth decay. It is a good idea to brush and floss after enjoying sticky treats to clean the teeth.

Tip #3: Eat Treats at the Right Time Instead of dessert after meals, this would be an appropriate time to eat Halloween candies and treats. Your mouth is already stimulated from the meal with sufficient saliva to help break down sweet treats and cancel out some of the acid and bacteria they produce.

Tip #4: Drink Water with Sweet Treats Instead of soda and juices, stick with water when enjoying your favourite Halloween candies, sweets, and treats. Water helps rinse the candy and snack particles off the teeth to limit how much is left on the teeth.

Tip #5: Brush Teeth at Least Twice a Day Make sure to stick with a healthy oral care routine that includes brushing teeth for two minutes in the morning and again in the evening before going to bed. You should avoid sweets and treats after brushing in the evening. If you do eat some more treats, remember to brush again after.

Tip #6: Floss in the Evening Make sure to get into the habit of flossing your teeth too. Flossing helps remove tooth-decay-causing bacteria from candies and treats from in between the teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach.

Tip #7: Consider Healthier Halloween Treats While some candy and sweats are expected, think about healthier choices like apples and other in-season fall fruits. Instead of passing out candy to trick-or-treaters, hand out non-food items, like a kid-friendly toothbrush.

Tip #8: Visit Your Dentist Often Schedule regular visits to your dentist to help keep your teeth clean. It is recommended to see a dentist every six months for teeth cleaning. There is still some plaque that gets on the teeth that you cannot remove yourself with brushing and flossing. Everyone at Kennedy Square Dental wishes you and your children a safe and fun Halloween!
