If you have traditional braces, whether they are metal brackets or clear, it is important to keep your teeth healthy. After all, you are working towards realigning your teeth for a beautiful smile. With braces, maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential to help prevent cavities from occurring.
Even with braces, tooth decay is still a concern. We recommend having a dental exam and cleaning at least twice a year. However, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits to help keep plaque and tartar under control. Let’s look at some commonly asked questions and their answers about cavities and braces.

Q. How Can I Get Cavities with Braces? Traditional braces have more places for food to get trapped. Trapped food breaks down in the mouth. As it does, plaque forms and tooth decaying bacteria are released. This is why brushing, and flossing are just as essential when wearing braces.
Q. What If I Get a Cavity? How Is It Filled? It will depend on the location of the cavity. If it is in an accessible area, then your braces do not need to be removed. However, if it is under the metal wires or overlays, then those need to be removed first. Then the cavity is filled. Afterward, the wires and overlays are refitted onto the teeth.
Q. How Often Should I Brush and Floss with Braces? With braces, it is important to keep food particles from becoming trapped. It is a good idea to brush your teeth after every meal and snack. Flossing should also be performed a few times each day, like after lunch, and again before going to bed at night.
Q. Are There Any Other Options Besides Braces If I’m Worried About Cavities?
If you are worried about getting cavities while wearing braces, you should talk to your dentist about Invisalign. Invisalign will also help realign and straighten your teeth. Instead of wire brackets and overlays, you wear clear plastic aligner cups over your teeth.

You remove the plastic cups at meal and snack times. You also remove the aligner when drinking any beverages besides water. You still must brush your teeth after every meal and snack, as well as anytime you drink sugary beverages before putting the aligners back in.
You also need to floss a few times each day. Although, preventing cavities can be easier with Invisalign since there are no wires or overlays to worry about. If you do get a cavity with Invisalign, you just take out the aligner to get it filled.
Q. What Else Can I Do to Prevent Cavities with Braces?
To prevent cavities with braces, you should:
1. Drink Plenty of Water
2. Limit Sugary Beverages, Candy Bars, Treats, Etc.
3. Eat More Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
4. Practice Good Oral Hygiene Habits
