Kennet Explorer News September / October 2013 Just wanted to start this Newsletter by welcoming all the new Explorers that have moved up from the Scout Troops and also congratulate everyone on their Exam results that they received during the Summer Break. I’m sure most of you saw the Special Summer Camp edition of our Newsletter which contained lots of photos of what we got up to, but I couldn’t resist sneaking a few into this edition as well! Summer Camp – Gower South Wales

Parents / Welcome Evening We welcomed over 20 new Explorers from the various Troops at the beginning of September. They have settled into the Explorer Units well and are enjoying all the great activities we offer. District Archery Sessions These continued on a Sunday Evening throughout Sept & Oct giving several Explorers the opportunity to complete a course in Archery for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Congratulations to Eleanor Rollinson who become the first member of our new “50 Club” (Scoring over 50 with just 6 Arrows). I’m sure there will be several more joining the club soon. District Archery Day – 22nd September 12 Explorers took part, and it was a very close competition with just 1 point separating the top 2. Congratulations to Joe Rollinson with his score of 43 out of 60, and commiserations to Amy who achieved 42 and two 41s! Many thanks go to Adam D, Aidan, Beth, Joe & Eleanor who helped on the ranges all day! EXPLODE 2013 - Berkshire County Explorer Camp This was held at Paccar Scout Campsite on a slightly damp weekend in mid-Sept. Over 100 Explorers from throughout Berkshire attended and enjoyed a wide variety of activities including Archery, Rifle-Shooting, Crate-Stacking, High-Ropes, several Army challenges and a GLOWTASTIC Neon/UV Party!!

First Response First Aid Courses We ran 2 courses during Sept & October for Explorers and Leaders to gain a First Aid Qualification. Both of the courses were well attended. Young leaders require this for Module K of their training. Brecon Beacons Hill-Walking A minibus full of Explorers & Leaders travelled to Wales, and spent a glorious, although damp weekend walking in the Brecon Beacons. Several members were invested behind a waterfall and then decided to have an outdoor shower!

Snow-Tubing Members of Pegasus & Wyvern ESU’s visited Bracknell Ski Centre to try out SnowTubing. Thorpe Park Fright Night Weekend We spent the Halloween weekend staying at Earleywood and attending Thorpe Parks “Fright Night” event. Everyone donned Spooky costumes and spent the day enjoying the rides/attractions. We invested 8 members into Pegasus whilst riding on Vortex.
