BAYANIHAN CO-HOUSING TRANSPORT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT With Jean Michael Diosma Ideas Competition 2016

HOME ALONG THE RAILROAD

The Bayanihan Co-Housing TOD seeks to re-conceptualize the human habitat in a fast-paced, urban set-up by integrating several livable spaces along the infrastructure of rail transportation; creating a collective for transient workers, while also addressing the problem of limited and premium land space. The outcome is a unique, mixed-use typology that supports its users with greater access and faster, more efficient commute to the various economic and industrial hubs between Mega Manila and the outlying provincial areas. The project aims to transcended the bounds of public housing by providing---in addition to an equitable, fully habitable environment---a strong context for human interaction and socialization among users through spaces designed for communal living. The project is intended as a self-running, self-sufficient neighborhood that encourages occupants to comingle and share roles and responsibilities to improve and help sustain their community. Denoting the Filipino spirit of cooperative undertaking for which the project is named after, Bayanihan Co-housing is thought as a paradigm for urban housing development: one that is utilitarian in form, yet humane in function.

CONTEXT

Imus

The existing Philippine National Railway (PNR) Metro South Commuter Line runs from Tondo, Manila to Calamba, Laguna. The line is thought to link Mega Manila to Bulacan and Pampanga through the North Main Line; to Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Rizal

through the South Main Line; and to the Bicol Region through the Bicol Commuter Line. The Metro South Commuter Line alone has 27 stations along a length of 28 kilometers or 17.4 miles, 15 of which are proposed sites for the Bayanihan Co-Housing TOD.

The photos above were taken in Buendia station located in Makati City. Like all PNR stations, the station is at grade. The simplistic and utilitarian nature of the structure is also typical to most stations on the line.

UNIT 337: SOLUTIONS FOR COMPACT LIVING Professional Residential Interiors 2017

15

COMPACT LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

The project consists of 337 square feet, two-story residential condominium unit. The client---a young couple---wanted to have lots of storage without compromising spaces intended for their day-to-day activities. The wife is an avid cook and wanted to expand the existing kitchen to include an island with stove and bar counter. By adding an island at the center of the room requires downsizing the existing powder room and redesigning the stairs on the first floor. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the second floor. One bedroom is for the couple and the other one is intended for their daughter. The husband works at home most of the time, hence, a dedicated work station is necessary. A raised sleeping platform was proposed to allow for storage spaces beneath the beds. To maximize natural lighting, opaque glass partitions were placed in between bedrooms to allow daylight to pass through the rooms: giving a sense of openness to a small, compact space.

EPHEMERA: MICROCOSM OF A NOMADIC WORLD With Gianfranco Galagar & Jean Michael Diosma Ideas Competition 2018

23

MICROCOSM OF A NOMADIC WORLD

Globalization has influenced the growth of cities through large scale urbanization. As a result, international migration has intensified over the years with the world becoming more globalized and connected through trade of goods and ideas. The exodus of people from one city or country to another has caused population shifts across the globe, affecting mostly urban areas. Work and living spaces are either lacking in migrant hotspots or excessive in cities that have experienced or currently facing depopulation. The latter is often evidenced by buildings, to wit hollowed-out skyscrapers, that are in various stages of disrepair. The vast empty towers are clear manifestation of urban decay, one that is often precipitated by stalled development or economic recession. With industries and population moving out of the city, and the subsequent decline in the demand for office and residential spaces, skyscrapers become unnecessary in the aftermath. Globalization is expected to continue alongside the cross-border movement of people. Advances in transportation and communication will help ease the flow of human capital and knowledge, thus blurring the world’s boundaries while bringing its peoples closer together. In this regard, a radically new approach in designing the skyscrapers of the future is proposed: a dynamic structure that is adaptable to the effects of globalization and responsive to human migration patterns. This is a building that has the potential to thrive in the ever-changing landscape of a globalized and borderless society. This is Ephemera---a microcosm of the world in the imagined future and a transient collective for nomadic, global citizens.

24

25

Ephemera is an examination of the concept of impermanence and its application to the design and assembly of a human habitat, particularly in the form of a skyscraper. It offers the idea of a temporal vertical settlement that exists and moves along the shifting patterns of human migration, creating a community for global nomads, while also preventing the building from crumbling away after being empty for various reasons. 26

Ephemera seeks the full potential of future innovations to help shape its concept. One is the idiosyncratic use of electromagnetism to hold and secure different components of the superstructure. There are three major parts to Ephemera’s assembly: pods, base and cap. Each part utilizes electromagnetism to perform separate yet collaborative functions. Individual units are suspended midair by the opposing magnetic forces exerted onto one another. Beyond physical autonomy, the combination of modularity and transportability of parts defines the concept of Ephemera and underscores its adaptability to new and changing contexts.
