As designers, we have the gift of using our unique talent and skills to find the solution to the many issues we see in our very own communities. Often times we tend to fall short to find the answer to our design issues because we tend to overlook the one aspect that makes the human race so incredibly beautiful: diversity.There can never truly be one answer to solving homelessness because there are diverse situations the homeless population can fall into. There are people who are disabled, families with young children, families with pets, people with a desire to be a part of a greater community, or people who simply want to find solace on their own. With this key component of diversity in mind, the Architects Without Borders team set out to create a POD that would be able to adapt to as many diverse situations as possible.

The POD itself can be paired with an adjacent POD and create a duplex system with an adaptable interstitial component that acts as a bridge between both PODs for 2 people coexisting, or for a family with children. The decks can then align to create a shared outdoor open space. However, why stop there? There are a variety of arrangements that this orientation works with to create larger clusters of PODs. This opens the door for the opportunity to create stronger community living.

POD DIMENSIONS

Our last thoughts when developing this POD included what could be the bigger use for these other than homelessness? With the recent spike in disaster awareness, we imagine the POD being able to be temporary housing in situations of natural disasters.The POD is easily assembled in whole panels, which can be easily stacked onto a flatbed and shipped to wherever it may be needed. With an easy to assemble interlocking system, a group of volunteers with little construction experience can easily assemble multiple units in a matter of hours. This broadened thought on the extra uses of a POD shows us the true potential of what we can do. It’s more than just temporary housing, it’s an adaptable solution for the unique challenges we may face as a community.

NOTABLE FEATURES The guiding principle for this design is adaptability, to suit occupant requirements using a single kit of parts. The kit may be used to easily expand or adapt the pod as circumstances require. Connecting two or more pods is also easily done. Design and assembly of the pod can be done without building expertise or tools.

USE OF PLYWOOD

We sought to capitalize on the structural capabilites of plywood by using it to form rigid, interlocking panels that don’t require traditional framing. It serves as structure, cladding and the interior finish surface. Plywood is also used for the furniture which is assembled from multiple identical adaptable storage crates.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

The POD will be comprised of interchangeable, interlocking pre-fabricated SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). The panels will be shipped to the building site in flat pack bundles, then assembled with included plates and pins without the need for tools or other fasteners. The panels are designed to be installed either vertically or horizontally, as circumstances require. Flashing is installed during assembly.
