ne of the visions of our school is to develop a well-balanced character in our students so that they will adopt a positive attitude towards life. A well-balanced character is nurtured by the education we provide in six domains, namely, spirituality, ethics, intellect, physique, social skills and aesthetics. It is the subject of Visual Arts that helps enrich our students in the domain of aesthetics. Most parents and students might think that Visual Arts is a subject which can be neglected as it does not carry marks in their report cards and will not affect their academic results. However, the curriculum guide of the EDB has stated very clearly that the overall aims of the arts curriculum are, first, to develop creativity and critical thinking, nurture aesthetic sensitivity, and build up cultural awareness and effective communication; second, to develop skills, knowledge and positive values and attitudes in arts; third, to gain delight, enjoyment and satisfaction through participating in arts-making activities and, fourth, to pursue a life-long interest in arts. Therefore, a successful arts education is crucial in helping our students achieve such goals as having a life-long learning attitude, critical and exploratory thinking, innovation and adaptability to change. Following the footsteps of the graduation exhibition, ART-BEAT 2012 organised by our first HKDSE students, our graduates this year who have taken VA have organized their own graduation exhibition, In Motion 2013. This is indeed a wonderful opportunity for them to display their talents in arts and share their joy of studying Visual Arts with others. The works shown in the exhibition are of two themes, ‘My Identity’ and ‘My Society’. For the theme ‘My Identity’, our students examined the question ‘Who am I?’ through different perspectives
Foreword Foreword at the beginning. They first traced their lives and tried to figure out their hobbies, their habits and their own lifestyles, followed by creating their own brands and designed their self-portraits as the final task. ‘My Society’ is a follow-up theme which has been derived from ‘My Identity’. To give our students some insight of the theme, a site visit to the Blue House in Wan Chai was organised. They were greatly inspired by that historic building and its surroundings. Thus, most of the works under this theme are based on the importance of heritage conservation and preservation for sustaining the nostalgic atmosphere in the district and the collective memories of Hong Kong people. Unlike the first theme, they had a greater freedom to think independently and explore the flow of ideas in creating their own masterpieces. As a result, the works of the second theme are of a greater variety, such as paintings, sculptures and even installations. The exhibition booklet that you now hold in your hands is a record and a sharing of the memories and masterpieces of these S6 graduates of 2013. This booklet goes further by also recognizing the good works of our junior Shungtakians. I believe that the exhibition and the booklet are a further step towards the professional excellence in Visual Arts education of our school. May I now take this opportunity to congratulate all who have been involved in this project. I am confident that with the passion and strong work ethics existing in Shung Tak, In Motion 2013 would undoubtedly be another achievement of our VA department.

One hundred Secondary One to Secondary Five students were invited by Zuni Icosahedron to create their own versions of Tian Tian which was to be exhibited in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in October 2012. From March to October 2012, our students worked together to explore the relationship between form and content; and dream and vision. They used their imagination and they put into practice experimental learning.
Our principal, Mr. Kung Kwong Pui, was also invited to create a Tian Tian which he called “Passing the Torch”. Mr. Kung thinks that, as an educator, and as a leader of children, it is an exceptionally important task and responsibility to educate the next generation, and to be good role models to them. He said “We are to be like a Superman, to always put the needs of others in front of ourselves and to be brave in times of adversities’.

In September to November 2013, our school was invited by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation to join the Artist-in-school Residence Workshop. Our students were able to show off their artistic talents, display their dramatic costumes and participate in the vibrant parade on the streets of Causeway Bay.

Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal Exhibition
78
In 2012, on the 25th anniversary of Andy Warhol’s death, the exhibition brought the largest ever collection of Andy Warhol’s work to Hong Kong. All S1 to S3 Shungtakians visited the exhibition to enrich their art experience about Pop Art. Also, S5 Visual Arts students were invited to join
“A Night at the Museum of Art with Andy Warhol”, co-organised by the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. It is an innovate programme where students experienced a unique adventure at the Hong Kong Museum at night. Students discovered a new meaning to creativity and pop art, media and technology, culture and society.
