CROTON ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Project Proposal: "Chalkin'-On-Hudson" Theme-“Down By THE RIVERSIDE” A Chalk Art Based “Festival” Prepared by: Ken Sargeant April 22, 2021

THE CANVAS-THE NORTH BRIDGE Location Whereas, there is an abundance of wall space at the Croton north pedestrian bridge, and whereas that location is the constant target of mischeivous graffiti, we propose to situate the Chalkin’ On Hudson street art festival at this location, The costs of maintaining the chalk festival might not exceed the cost of routine maintenance. Aproximately 250 feet in overall length, with roughly 200 running feet of “canvas” on each of two sides, we have roughly 400 linear feet of “gallery space” comprising the span. It is comprised of two sections, the longer, on the Village side is roughly 120 feet in length, the river side span is roughly 105 feet in length. These separate spans offer the opportunity for two separate age divisions. The abutments on the water side might provide the opportunity to engage profesional artists,

Target Audience The objective of this event is to provide a safe, fun family oriiented activity that can be coducted outdoors, providing a vehicle of expression, vendor opportunities and an opportunity opportunity to expose the larger community to our Village. While it is targeted at smaller children and their families, there should also be “chalking” opportunities for teen artists, as well. It could be free, or by fee. Particpants could be provided with acceptable materials along with enrollment costs. It could be competitive or strictly for fun. A number of high visibity spots could be made advailable on the waterside for professional artwork. Other municipalities have also invited professional artists seeking an outdoor venue in which to display their talents. There could be and even vendor opportunities to local businesses likeThe Tavern, The Blue Pig, Capricio’s etc..

Special considerations Existing surface graffitti on span requires overpainting prior to event. Police services should be in place on both ends. Bridge span may require powerwashing upon completion. Participants must agree to assure that artwork is in keeping with community standards and to use acceptable, , non- permanent chalks.

Benefits The event will provide a wholseome, family oriented event, without significant cost to the village. Hopefully there will be some measure of cultural tourism resulting from participants and their families coming to view the “show”. Similar events have been successfully staged thoughout the world.
