NUNGALINYA COLLEGE ACCOMMODATION PROJECT

Reflecting the brief’s focus on designing for and acknowledging unheard voices, the Nungalinya College Accommodation project (in Darwin) aims to foster a communal learning environment, broadening student’s relationship between Christian and traditional Indigenous ideals, all while providing a sensation of respite from the stresses back home. Through the amalgamation of principles based around environmental, cultural, pragmatic and ephemeral needs, the project stresses the importance of community, sharing of knowledge and the connection to the land.

DRAWING PROCESS Drawing is a key component of my design process. Site analysis, diagrams and initial ideas are often initially drawn up by hand and refined later in the project.

Using the ‘sophisticated tent’ idea from Richard Leplastrier, the overall design follows a communal layout, encircling two communal campfire yarning circles and a mango tree.

FIBRIOSITY PROJECT #2

ARCHITECTURAL MODELS AND MAGICAL MEREOLOGIES Law courts provide the opportunity for unity or division. In this context, individuals become vital cells within the sovereign while the sovereign attempts to maintain both itself and the systems that help to provide for its people, posing the question of whether people are dependent on the sovereign or vice versa. The model embodies a foreground-midground-background relation through its viewing distance. From distance, the building seems to form a blanket over the mysterious, shrouded interior of the Law Courts. While most laws and structures in the justice system are common knowledge, there remain aspects that solely become the responsibility of the contemporary justice system, aspects that are veiled from the common peripheral of knowledge. The vertical fibrous elements in the exterior facade become midground elements, evoking a sense of integrity and protection while reinforcing the individual vs collective duality present in the sovereign. It is the duty and responsibility of the sovereign to protect its people, but people are needed to protect the sovereign itself, presenting a reciprocated relationship. In the foreground aspect, the fine white speckled texture creates a solid vs void relationship, interweaving between the opaque and the transparent, the unknown and the known.

SCULPTURAL MODEL Amalgamation of individual bubbly forms near the bottom softening the threshold between the ground and the building

PRESENTATION MODEL The fibrous vertical grooves in the building playing with light and shadow with the spray painted exterior exploring the relationship between opaque and transparent.

FIBRIOSITY

Foam elements furthering the idea of the individual and sovereign’s reciprocal relationship.

1:500 PRESENTATION MODEL

Model created using 3D printing (transparent filament to replicate translucency of glass) and white spray paint to replicate opacity.

14

FACADE DETAIL MODEL Experimenting with layers of spray paint to test the ability to transition between transparent and opaque.

Referencing the ‘frits’ (small white dots) present facade Frank Gehry’s IAC Building, the gradient detail is achieved through modifying the spray paint to present itself in a collection of tiny white dots.

FIBRIOSITY

1:200 detailed model experimenting with the idea of an undulating curtain wall system.

TREE OF GROWTH PROJECT #3

ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 2A Situated at the heart of the city on Clarence Street, the Tree of Growth focuses on the reviving aspects of the correctional rehabilitation process. Through the intersection and the subsequent interaction of the correctional facility and synagogue programs, convictors are immersed into another world, undergoing the journey of self-correction, self-improvement and ultimately, enlightenment. The correctional facility aims to provide a passageway past the chaos and negativity of their lives before entering the program. Through the long process of self reflection and dedication to improving their lives, the young convictors are welcomed into a life of purpose and prosperity that stretches well past their time in the Tree of Growth.
