How can you support

Children’s oral health has always been massively important. It is well understood that a regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for keeping children’s teeth free from decay. Despite this, the overall dental health picture for UK children has been causing alarm for some time and the lack of available dental appointments across the country in recent years has worsened the situation. Promoting the benefits of good oral health to children and their parents/carers is therefore more crucial than ever.

Are children’s teeth that bad?

Why not consider the following:

Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England.

Use kid talk not dental talk - Choose more fun names for what you use in practice, for example turn your air-water syringe into a water gun and your saliva ejector into a super straw.

Tooth extractions are the most common hospital procedure in 6 to 10-year-olds, with at least 60,000 days missed from school for hospital extractions alone in 2019, according to government statistics. Gingivitis in children and adolescents has been estimated to affect as high as 73% between the ages of 6 and 11. It is estimated that the cost to the NHS of treating oral conditions sits at around £3.4 billion per year.

How else can poor oral hygiene affect children? It is important to stress that a healthy oral hygiene routine for children is about more than just cavity protection. Poor dental hygiene in kids also has the potential to affect & influence the following:

Provide positive reinforcement - Children love being praised so don’t be afraid to go overboard when telling them how well they’re doing. Praise can inspire the child to be more cooperative, during their visit and at home. Use fun flavours - Put the power in the patient’s hands by letting them pick their own flavour of paste or varnish. Little touches like this can be another step in empowering kids to care about their teeth from an early age. But it’s not just words that can positively influence children’s oral health, but products too.

Gum Disease Awareness Month: How can you help? This February, efforts are being made across the UK and globally to raise awareness of gum disease and highlight the associated signs, symptoms, and prevention methods. With over half of the population of the UK displaying signs of gum disease, there is still plenty of work for the dental industry to do.

Is there a lack of awareness of gum disease in the UK? Most people will suffer some form of gum inflammation during their lifetime. A recent Public Health England report found that 57% of people in the UK are currently showing signs of gingivitis. Meanwhile around 10% of adults appear to be suffering from a more severe form of periodontitis that causes loss of supporting bone, according to the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Surgery. But despite the prevalence of gum disease in the UK and the amount of information available online, a 2023 survey found that only half of those with gingivitis were worried about it and most people didn’t realise they had any periodontal issues. The study also found that only 50% of the 200 participants associated gum disease with poor oral health and less than 20% knew of its association with systemic health conditions.

Raising awareness It is vital that all patients suffering from gum disease understand what can happen if the signs are ignored and good oral hygiene is not maintained. Along with potentially leading to bad breath, gum shrinking, loose teeth and loss of teeth, it can be worth reminding patients of the link between their dental health and whole-body health.

Various studies over the years have found links between periodontitis and systemic health conditions and diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis. For patients with diabetes, gum disease has also been found to increase blood sugar levels which can make the complication of diabetes worse.

How else you can help Being able to share with patients clear, precise images from an intraoral camera can help to immerse them in their oral health journey, give them a greater understanding of what treatment they need and increase the motivation to look after their teeth. When a patient can visualise the situation their oral health is in, there’s a strong chance that they will be more likely to accept oral hygiene recommendations and book a hygienist. Good oral hygiene advice should include proper brushing techniques, the advantages of electric toothbrushes and the benefits of flossing or interdental brushing. Interdental brushes, which all practices can keep in stock to allow patients to buy, can reach 40% of the tooth surface missed by brushing and are now recommended over flossing by many experts for their superior cleaning ability. Spotlight on... Harry Barlow To give you a greater insight into our team we are shining a light on some of our wonderful account managers and marketers. Up this month is account manager, Harry Barlow.

As the old saying goes, “if you can’t play football, sell dental products.” Once a budding Premier League footballer destined to play for England (so he tell us), Harry moved into the far more interesting world of dentistry after injuring his knee. Account Manager Harry has been a part of the Kent Express’ Sales Team for 5 years now. Prior to this he spent 2 years in our warehouse where he was responsible for picking, packing and research.
