Welcome to our Autumn issue . . . With the summer already a distant memory, this issue is packed with activities for the upcoming half term, healthy lunch suggestions and great parks for blustery autumn days. And all are independently written by Kent parents.

I proudly listed my planned outings only to be meet with groans and comments such as “oh, don’t – it’s a complete waste of money”. She then gave me a local mum's view of the best places to visit. Even better was that these were often the cheaper, less well-known options so we avoided the crowds, saved money and enjoyed a greater variety of activities. It reminded me how useful it was to have another parent’s opinion rather than relying on the hype. And this is what we try to achieve in each issue of Kent Mama – using our local knowledge and that of other parents, we give you unbiased information and advice about things-to-do, places-to-go and help and support for families in the Maidstone and mid-Kent area. I hope you enjoy it!

Part way through a cheap and cheerful holiday camping in Devon I caught up with another mum who lived locally. As any regular visitor to the West country will know - it rains a lot. Not just showers, but torrential downpours for days on end. So before leaving Medway I had Googled cheap days out for wet days.

given free to parents in Maidstone and Medway.

Drama Kids iS your child a Budding actor? or a potential Script writer? the haZlitt youth theatre in maidStone haS over 160 memBerS and iS one of the moSt popular youth theatre companieS in the South eaSt. karen Smith Spoke to megan proSSer of hyt to find out more. Established in 1997, HYT provides an exciting opportunity for children aged 6 - 18 years to act, and to learn skills from the whole spectrum of theatre. They run regular workshops on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night, as well as specialist projects such as musicals and west-end trips. It has become so popular they have launched further weekly sessions on a Thursday night, as well as ‘Dancing for Musical Theatre’ on Sundays. There are weekly sessions for 68 year olds on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The youngsters meet for one hour and work at teambuilding and confidence through drama games and activities. These include: learning the basics of improvisation and comedy, taking part in craft and singing activities, and looking at pieces of script each term, culminating in a full-scale production at least once a year.

Sessions for 9-11 year olds teach children to devise their own scripts, and look at the beginnings of theatre practice. This includes focus, concentration, line-learning, and on-stage technique such as projection and characterisation. HYT is permanently based at the Hazlitt Arts Centre in Earl Street, Maidstone meaning all productions can take place in one of the centre’s three venues - The Hazlitt, The Exchange, and The Fourth Wall, as well as going on tour to London and other Kent venues. Members can also take advantage of everything that a vibrant and busy Arts Centre has to offer, including free tickets to some shows and technical experience in stage lighting and theatrical set design.

The HYT staff have all worked as actors and directors, and come from theatre education backgrounds. They pride themselves on providing a friendly, committed and organised service to parents and children. HYT is one of the more reasonably priced opportunities for young people in Kent, at just £50 a term, for three terms a year. For more information, or an application pack, call the Hazlitt Youth Theatre Office on 01622 686958, or email hyt@ maidstone.gov.uk.

At the first Scouts Rally in 1909, a group of girls turned up. They represented hundreds of other girls insisting that they wanted to be Scouts too. While many parents at the time would have considered camping, hiking and similar activities to be unladylike, Lord Baden Powell had an idea to form a separate organisation for girls so that they could work towards self-development independently of the boys. The Girl Guide movement remains single sex and is split into the following age three groups:

About a quarter of all eight-year old girls in the UK are Brownies

can become a Rainbow at any time after her fourth birthday. The emphasis is on having fun. Rainbows play lots of games, cook and make crafts.

brownies: After their seventh birthday, girls

move up to Brownies. Brownies belong to a pack and work in small groups called Sixes.

guides: Between the ages of 10 and 14 girls become Guides. Being a Guide is all about learning new skills and making decisions. Guiding can provide a safe environment to explore new possibilities and achieve personal goals.

nutrition Why should we watch what kids eat?

Children need plenty of calories and nutrients to help them grown and develop properly. Lots of snack foods marketed at children are particularly high in energy and contain few nutrients. These foods tend to be really high in fat, sugar, salt and additives, associated with many health problems such as childhood obesity and dental decay.

WE HEAR ABOUT FOOD GROUPS, CALORIES, FAT, SALT AND CARBS. WHAT SHOULD PARENTS BE LOOKING AT WHEN TRYING TO ACHIEVE A BALANCED DIET FOR THEIR CHILDREN?

Tuck in!

By Heidi Gould Nutritionist

Giving kids the right fuel for school helps them concentrate and stay alert. BUT in the morning rush to get ready, it can be easy to reach for A bag of crisps and chocolate bar. Many schools now ban crisps at tuck time and ask parents to provide healthier options. But it can be difficult to find good foods that are easy for you and that your kids will eat. So we asked LOCAL School Nutrition Advisor, Heidi Gould, for her advice. 10

www.kentmama.co.uk

I always encourage parents with children over the age of two to use the eatwell plate. This shows a plate divided into portions, in much the same way as a dinner plate is typically split into meat, veg and potatoes. Parents can look at the food they are serving their children over the course of a day or two and see if the proportions match those on the eatwell plate. Foods such as rice, bread, potatoes and pasta should make up a large part of their diet. Fruit and vegetable should make up another large chunk of their daily intake. Dairy products such yoghurts, milk and cheese and proteins like meat, fish, eggs and beans should make up some of the diet. And finally a small amount, can be food or drinks that are high in fat and/or sugar.

How has school food changed over the past few years?

School diners are now much healthier and nutritious so if you opt for them you know your child will be getting a balanced meal. They use less processed foods and more fresh ingredients. Useful websites www.nhs.uk/change4life www.eatwell.gov.uk www.bhf.org.uk

Packed Lunch Ideas

l Use a starchy base such as

bread, bagel, baguette or pita bread. Thicker slices will fill up a hungry child and provide the energy they need. l Add a protein filling of ham,

tuna or cheese or try being more adventurous with fillings such as banana, hummous, grated carrot or sliced egg. Add some salad such as lettuce and cucumber with the filling. l For a change from

sandwiches, use left over rice or pasta to make a salad. Add chopped dried fruit, orange segments, finely chopped pepper, cucumber, peas or sweetcorn. Add some tinned tuna, salmon, chicken or ham and mix with a little oil, low-fat salad dressing or mayonnaise.

l Drinks such as milkshakes,

Make your own colourful fruit bags or mini boxes with a few segments of Satsuma, grapes and dried fruit. You can do the same with vegetable sticks of cucumber, carrots, red pepper or cherry tomatoes, which can be dipped into hummous or low-fat cream cheese. Made in advance, these will last for a few days in the fridge.

NB. Keeping food cool is extremely important when it comes to packed lunches; l Use a freezer block or, l Freeze individual items of food such as sandwiches or cartons of juice which can defrost slowly until ready to use at lunchtime.

Instead of chocolate bars and cake bars try: l Fruit dippers: cocktail sticks with chunks of pineapple or melon to dip in yoghurt. l Hot cross bun, fruit bread, fruit scone, malt loaf, or banana bread as a lower-fat alternative to cake. l Mini blueberry muffin or scotch pancake. l Low fat rice pudding, custard or jelly pots. l A small portion of flapjack, oat cookie or carrot cake.

l If you have a child that likes

to pick at different bits, put together their own version of a ploughman’s with a roll or oatmeal crackers, cubed cheese, ham or cold chicken. smoothies and fruit juice provide a good source of vitamins and minerals. But only serve them with food. Between meals opt for tooth-friendly options such as water or semiskimmed milk.

Not much on. So it’s a good day to catch up on homework before school begins again tomorrow!

Drawing Game You need at least three of you to do this. Each take a piece of paper and draw a head. Fold where the neck ends so that you can’t see what you have drawn and pass it to the next person. Now draw a body and fold the paper just above the waist. The next person draws the legs and feet. Then unfold your paper to reveal your mixed-up creature. For more participants, add extra folds and features.

Doodling did you know? Scribbling away at mini pictures and shapes doodling - can be good for you. Apparently, if you doodle while you are being told information you are more likely to remember it, and drawing and listening shows that your brain is working and alert!

Stay-at-home dads what’s it really like?

By Adam Knott About U Photography

Look around the school playground and you’ll see a growing number of dads at pick up time. Whilst this may be due to the changing economic climate, for more and more couples it’s the result of a decision making process where both parents equally evaluate who should stay home.

Adam’s advice for stay-at-home dads:

But according to stay-athome dad Adam Knott from Aylesford “there is still a stigma attached when mums return to work and dads stays home. This is very unfortunate as men can do just as good a job as women!” Adam has been caring for his two young sons for the last three years, whilst running a home business, About U Photography. So we asked him “what’s it really like?” “Giving up work was a very hard decision that we didn’t make easily. My wife is a schoolteacher and we felt that it would be the best choice for our young family, enabling us to spend the school summer holidays together. At first I went through many emotions. I wondered if my wife would resent me for spending so much time with our son whilst she was at work. Then came the feeling of not being a real man and supporting my family financially. I felt very alone for the first few months and missed the day-to-day adult interaction you get from working in a tight team. I must stress that it is very hard work, no tea breaks or feet up in front of the telly. There’s the house to clean, the washing, cooking and children to entertain. Not to mention finding time to venture out!

n Have the courage to go to local toddler groups. Your child can make friends with others who may eventually go to the same school and you will meet parents in a similar situation to you. Or you can try an activity class such as Musical Mayhem in Aylesford. The structure of the classes means there is less pressure on you to strike up conversations and class teachers are good at making sure everyone feels welcome.

My first new task was to continue going to the antinatal group lunches that my wife had attended. We are all very close friends now and they have been a welcome support. It has been a valuable experience in the art of dealing with young babies and children and useful for my children to socialise with others.

n Take your child to play areas near to you. This wears them out and gives you a change of scenery. My favourite parks are Mote Park, Penenden Heath and Capstone Park in Medway. All of which have good play areas designed for all ages and somewhere to feed the ducks. On rainy days I’d recommend Larkfield Leisure Centre’s indoor soft play area, Larkabout.

In my own opinion, the most daunting prospect was attending the local toddler groups. At times it would have been an easier option to stay at home, but you really do need some adult company. When walking into a group for the first time nothing hits you more than the blank stares and then the realisation that you are the only dad. I knew

it is very hard work, no tea breaks or feet up in front of the telly.

n Allow your child the opportunity to go to mum if they hurt themselves or need a cuddle, this will ensure your partner is seen as being as important as you are to your child. n Remember that the housework can wait. Playing is a vital way for your child to learn.

it was going to be tough but not this hard. Then you notice that you all have children in common and conversation is easily made. But I would urge mums to make it easier and smile to new dads.”

Adam runs About U Photography. He specialises in producing reasonably priced portraits for all the family. As well as lifestyle shots in a location of your choice he also has a studio in Aylesford. For more information visit www. aboutuphotography.co.uk or call Adam on 01622 204762.

Maidstone maternity news Maternity on the Move?

At the time of going to press Maidstone Council has scheduled a meeting with health authority officials asking them to explain their decision to withdraw maternity delivery services from the county town. Says local Councillor Fran Wilson: “The statistical evidence does not support the removal of this service to Pembury. We demand that the full consultancy led maternity unit remains in Maidstone.” Scheduled for October 13th the meeting is open to the public and will be webcast live on the council’s website www.digitalmaidstone.co.uk

Proud to be Pregnant If you want to show off your bump in style this autumn Pregalicious is the place to visit. Situated in the heart of the Royal Star Arcade in Maidstone it offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to shop in style. An independent shop, it has a wide range of top name brands in maternity and nursing wear at affordable prices and staff who know their stock. Says owner Lisa Skinner: “A big part of our business is bra purchasing. We offer a free maternity and nursing bra fitting service which is extremely popular and we now stock both Anita and Bravado bras. When I was pregnant myself I found it extremely difficult to find reasonably priced and stylish maternity wear and so the shop was born. We sell products online via our website but the big advantage for local mums-to-be is that they can come into the shop and try things on. Women’s bodies come in all shapes and sizes and we can offer expert advice on buying the right clothes to fit your growing bump. We have our fantastic autumn stock arriving all the time including beautiful maternity dresses and nursing tops from Swedish range Bara Glad.” The shop has a calm and relaxed atmosphere with lots of local information for parents-to-be, a quiet corner to breastfeed and an area for small children to play while you shop. Visit their shop at Unit 6, Royal Star Arcade, High Street, Maidstone or online at www.pregalicious.co.uk

Yummy Mummy

Local mum Jessica Foxwell gives a whole new meaning to the phrase yummy mummy! Based in Platts Heath she recently set up a new service delivering fresh baby food to parents in the Maidstone area. Says Jessica: “I noticed friends from baby groups didn’t always have time to make their own baby food and valued the convenience of store-bought jars. Simple, home-made purées are far better for weaning, but why should the busy mum have to compromise? I looked around for fresh products that could be stored until needed and couldn’t find any. This inspired me to create YumTum. We deliver home-made purées made using organic and often locallysourced fruit and veg. All our purées are immediately frozen to preserve the flavour and nutrients, and can be popped straight in the freezer and then microwaved when you need them.” For details contact Jessica on 07725091825 or email jess@yumtum.org.uk 22

we parents are an enterprising lot – with more and more mums and dads sewing, knitting and cooking. Some have even taken the next step and turned their hobbies into moneymaking businesses. we spoke to them about their inspirations and advice for other would-be entrepreneurs. cupcake avenue

“I made my first birthday cake for my sister when I was 10, and since then have been hooked on baking. I love the wow factor when people see a beautiful cake” says Alpa Patel who set up www.cupcakeavenue.co.uk earlier this year. “I baked for family and friends and many commented I should start a business but I didn’t have the time or confidence. When my first daughter was born I went back to my finance job full-time, dropping her off at 7am and picking her up in the evening. Looking ahead to the future I knew I wanted to be there to collect her from school. So while I was on maternity leave

with my second daughter I booked myself into some Adult Education courses. I took local evening courses in cake decorating, sugar paste flowers and creative chocolate, and am currently studying sugar craft. I decided to specialise in cupcakes because there is a gap the market in Maidstone and it’s a growing trend. Cupcakes can work out much cheaper than a big cake at weddings and birthdays and my mini-cupcakes are great for kids’ parties or as canapés. I have lots of fun coming up with new flavours and toppings; my most popular is the chocolate ganache cupcake followed by cookies’n’cream and peanut butter. I have set myself a goal: in one year I would like to go part-time in my current job, so that I can spend more time with the kids as well has work from home baking cupcakes.

tip: Do your research into the legality of setting up your business.

I spoke to a local insurance broker, the Council and the Food Standards Agency to find out what I needed to do to bake from home.

Bunting and Bows

Beth from Rochester, met business partner Anna while studying Textile Design. Says Beth: “After having my daughter I wanted to find original items to deck out her nursery. I couldn’t find what I wanted so I made them myself. Friends commented how much they liked them so I thought - why not sell them.” “We felt there was a gap in the market,” says Anna. “We create items people will treasure,

particularly for occasions like new babies, christenings and milestones. We sell online (www.buntingandbows.co.uk) and also on eBay and Etsy. Our range includes cushions, bunting and wall art. All personalised with a child's name so each one is unique. My favourite is our recycling service where customers can send us old baby clothes or blankets and we turn them into a beautiful, one-off item for their children.” Says Beth: “Neither of us have run businesses before, but we’re picking up the necessary skills as we go along. Our advice would be have an idea, find a gap in the market and don’t be afraid to just give it a go! We wish we had done it years ago!”

TIP: Websites are a must

these days for any small business but they don’t have to cost a fortune. We built ours ourselves using www.moonfruit.com. It’s easy to use and we haven’t compromised on the look or functionality of our website. We were able to produce a professional result at a very reasonable price.

TIP: Take good

photos of your stock, making sure they are bright and clear, to use on your own site or eBay. Visit local independent shops taking a smile, sample of stock and price list and see if they're interested.

Local mum Catherine Short set up her business, Mollycupcakes, three and a half years ago. “I was waiting around on maternity leave for my second daughter Molly to arrive. Feeling big and bored I sat down and painted some plain pegs. I thought it would be a nice way of displaying the new baby cards I was about to get. Then a light-bulb moment happened and I popped a pack on eBay," she says. "Within a couple of days I was approached by a shop wanting to stock then and it’s gone from strength to strength. I now sell my products online at www.mollycupcakes.co.uk, Etsy and at shops in Kent. Local and national craft fairs and events are another great way to get your products out there and meet other like-minded businesses." to advertise call 01634 814364

Local Support As parents, we all know how valuable it is to receive support and encouragement from others in similar situations. Here we focus on two Maidstone-based support groups for parents.

Mums Without Mums “I decided to set up this group as a result of my own experiences” says Aylesford mum Lorna. “My mum died when I was very young so when I had my children I was not fortunate enough to have either her emotional or practical support. As much as I love being a mum, at times it can be hard being without a mum of my own. It felt as if everywhere I went with my baby or child there are other mums with their children and grandma. It can be a lonely and isolating experience, but equally something that you have no way of avoiding. I knew that I was not the only person in this situation so I set up Mums without Mums earlier this year. We have been lucky enough to have the support of East Malling Children’s Centre. We now have a weekly drop-in meeting at their centre each Tuesday between 1-2:30pm. Providing support, reassurance and comfort to other mums who, for whatever reason, are without their mother.” For more information contact Lorna on 07799 753586 or email ltooby@blueyonder.co.uk

Maidstone Gingerbread Group Maidstone Gingerbread is a self-help charitable group, affiliated with the Gingerbread National Organisation, providing a support network for lone parents. The group is open to all lone parents who are bringing up a child or children alone and who have access to their children. Men and women can join, although they stress that is it not a dating agency. The group provides a neutral place to meet with other lone parents and their children to provide support, social events and friendship. They hold local weekly 30

www.kentmama.co.uk

meetings and regular family days out and adult social events. For more information visit www. maidstonegingerbread.co.uk or call Allison on 07500 860468. Says Allison: “I joined Gingerbread quite a while after I got divorced and have been a member for about 18 months now. It is invaluable to be able to talk to people who are in the same situation as me and who are usually having the same kinds of problems. The route to becoming a single parent can be very varied but just having someone to talk to who knows what it is like to bring up a child alone is a great support. The family days and adult evenings are a fantastic way to get out and about without being on your own. If you have been a single parent for a month or ten years and would like some support please contact us and pop along to a meeting.”
