...walking in a winter wonderland Pull on your wellies this winter and head outside for some fresh air, free fun and exercise. Walking with Kids l Not all walks are suitable for buggies so if you have a baby or toddler invest in a back-pack style baby carrier. Alternatively visit websites dedicated to walks with buggies for some pushchair-friendly suggestions www.walkswithbuggies.com or www.pushchairwalks.co.uk l To make it more interesting than ‘just a walk’ combine it with a fun activity such as walking to the top of a hill and flying a kite or collecting pinecones for Christmas decorations. Or join up with another family or friends to make it a social event. l Take something nice to eat and drink along the way. A flask of hot chocolate after a long walk will go down a treat. l Stopping to look at things along the way is part of the experience, so don’t make the walk too long or discourage children from exploring. Pressuring them to keep up the pace and move on will turn it into a training exercise rather than a fun activity. l Bigger kids like a challenge and enjoy clambering over boulders, small steep hills or jumping over streams. Woodland walks are likely to appeal more than wide-open landscapes. l If your kids love gadgets, invest in a cheap B pedometer so ools RSP P e ff d li n C se l they can count s, nr Grave , Leybourne n y sk Je l Park y their steps. tr n u o C s g urne Lake Then next est Mallin W l L ey b o , rk a P n r time they go l M ano e, nr Cuxto rv se e R encourage n mbe Farm o o st sc n Te a , R l ntr y Park u them to beat o C m n a o h st p l Te r Meo their last tr y Park, n n u o C g y e in sl tl d, D e l Tro score. values of make do and mend do and self sufficiency has meant that the Women’s Institute is appealing to a whole new generation of women. 36 year old mum-of-three Sue Wade has recently launched a new Rochester WI, at Meadows Pre-school, filled with like-minded mums. Says Sue: “I felt that the local area was missing somewhere for women to get together, away from their family to talk about other things in life. Scratch the surface and you find that every woman has a story to tell, special talent or an interest they are passionate about. At our next meeting on 2nd Dec one of our members, who happens to be a chocolatier, is talking about truffle making." The group meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month. You can go along for three free trial sessions before becoming a member. For details call Sue on 07929 180838. Elsewhere in Kent the WI has 6,300 members in 167 institutes. parenting
Surviving – A parent’s guide Christmas Eve Liz Jones, mum of three, Maidstone
Every year we have a Christmas eve party, late afternoon, for local friends who also have kids. The children all head off upstairs to play and us adults can relax with a glass of wine before the big day. It's a lovely way to start Christmas and everyone can walk home happy and ready for bed.
Bridget Haddican, mum of two, Tunbridge Wells
Hyped up kids can be hard to handle. Last year I discovered www.noradsanta. org, a free website where you can watch Santa’s progress around the world from Christmas eve. Great distraction and a wonderful reminder that they need to be in bed before his planned arrival.
Preparing for Christmas Beth Stewart, mum of one, Aylesford
I start getting ready in the previous January by buying cards, wrapping paper and decorations in the January sales. The only problem, 11 months later, is remembering where you put them!
Lara Slavin, mum of three and Kent mama editor, Rochester
My husband works in the construction industry so the credit crunch hit us last autumn. It’s the thought that counts when it came to presents so my eightyear-old made gifts for most of the family. My mother-in-law was close to tears (of joy I assume!) when she received handmade lavender bags and a personalised washbag. And both granddads were delighted with their boozy fruit cakes made by the kids. In the past, friends have given us babysitting vouchers as gifts or we’ve skipped the presents and had a day out or trip to the panto instead.
Bridget Haddican, mum of two, Tunbridge Wells
My husband has a big family so we organise our own secret santa. Each person gets the name of one other family member and buys them a gift up to the value of £50. It means everyone gets one decent present and I only have to buy once. 28
www.medwaymama.co.uk
Victoria Huttler, Mum of two, Rochester
Don’t see Christmas as something to be endured! Relax, have a glass of bubbly in bed and watch the kids open their presents. Life doesn’t get much better than that so relish it. Before your know it your kids will be floppy-fringed teens and you’ll yearn for those years of 4am Christmas wake-up calls. Or not?
Pernille Richards, Mum of two, Headcorn
In my native Denmark we opened our presents on Christmas Eve. But only after you have been to church, waited the whole day, had a long family dinner, walked around the Christmas tree singing carols. And only then can you begin to open one present at a time. Which usually takes until midnight. The point isn’t the presents, it’s the waiting for the presents! Once they are opened it’s a big anticlimax. I let my children have presents on Christmas day but avoid some of the ‘feeding frenzy’ by saving family presents until after lunch and then only one at a time to squeeze every last bit of Christmas excitement and atmosphere!

Remember it’s your Christmas too so consider your own needs and allow yourself to celebrate. Christmas should be about spending time with your children, friends and family so think of your estranged partner’s feelings. It is a hard time to be without your children so try to get on at least once a year.
dawn Butler, mum of one, Strood
Don’t be afraid to ring the changes rather than get stuck in the same “your in-laws one year, mine the next” rut. Have friends instead of family or go out to dinner. Also be aware that sometimes in-laws feel it’s as much of a duty for them to come to you as for you to host. When my mother remarried she and her new husband wanted quiet, romantic Christmases on their own.
Claire Wood, Where’dya Get That cooking sauces, Gillingham
I like to have plenty of time to enjoy Christmas day and not be tied to the kitchen. But to do that you have to plan ahead and be organised. On Christmas eve I peel spuds and leave them to soak in salted water. I make pigs in blankets and put them in the fridge and I make my swede with pepper and lots of butter. Then on Christmas day I have a list of what needs to go in the oven when so that it all comes together at the right time.
Back to reality Jackie Pugh, mum of two, Rochester
It's always tempting to keep the celebrations going between Christmas and New Year but I definitely need to get back to reality for those few days in between. Simple food, cutting back on the booze and sweets, switching off the tv and getting the kids out for some long winter walks does wonders. You're then fighting fit to take on New Year!!
Sue Wybrow, mum of two, and founder of Popdance exercise classes
If you want to get fit in the New Year the best way to stick at it is to do something fun. Some classes offer a free taster session so you can 'try before you buy'. Encourage your pals to go with you - not only will it be fun, but you'll keep each other going!
Laura Church, L.A.n.E personal trainer and nutritional advisor
Don't be tempted by fad diets or get thin quick schemes in January. They don't work! The best way to lose weight sensibly is to change your eating habits for life. The one thing that will have the biggest impact is potion control. Eating little and often will balance your blood sugar levels and stop you getting so hungry you eat more than your body needs.
Bridget Haddican, mum of two, Tunbridge Wells
Magazines and TV programmes would have you think that unless you have veg doused in alcohol and every herb going, with three types of poultry and six types of potato, you will have failed. Most children, and many adults, prefer a simple roast dinner. So give yourself a break on Christmas day and cook something tried and tested.

Charity begins at home AT This time of year, thoughts often turn to others in the community. So we approached local organisations who work with families in Medway and Maidstone and asked what we, as local parents, can do to help them.
Kent Youth
Homestart
With centres in Medway and Maidstone, Homestart’s aim is to provide practical support for local families with children under the age of 5. Says Homestart Medway’s Sue Hockley: “As well as running local playgrounds, we also have a network of volunteers who spend time with a family who may be going through difficulties. Our trained volunteers spend half a day each week with a family, giving friendship, advice and practical support.” Homestart is a registered charity and relies on fundraising and donations. This year it is asking for contributions towards toddlergroup Christmas parties in mid-December. It also needs volunteers, who have their own parenting experience, to give one morning a week to help another local family. Training courses run three times a year, the next is on 14th January 2010. Being a Homestart volunteer can be extremely rewarding and provide a life-line to another parent at a difficult time. For more information contact Homestart Medway on 01634 570717 or Homestart Maidstone on 01622 675879. 30

Works with young people throughout Kent and has two priorities for its charity work – ‘better clubs, stronger communities’ and ‘young people leading and learning’. It provides support to more than 200 local youth groups through a range of services including training for volunteers, activities for young people and organising CRB checks. Says Funding Manager Carol Wynn: “We believe all children and young people have undiscovered potential. Our aim is to create opportunities for them to discover and unlock that potential and learn life skills to help them gain independence. Although Kent Youth gets some support from the local authorities in Kent & Medway, it relies very heavily on voluntary funding. This year's Annual Fundraising Carol Concert takes place on Saturday 5th December at All Saints Church in Maidstone at 7pm. Entry is free with a collection taking place during the service. Kent Youth is always looking for volunteers to help them in the office and with fundraising and can also help anyone who wishes to volunteer with a youth club to find a suitable placement. For more information contact Carol Wynn on 01634 281841 or visit www.kentyouth.org
MAGIC
Is a parent-run support group for families who have children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Established in 2005 by six mums of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder it now has more than 300 families as members. Its aim is to ensure consistency of approach for all agencies that work with children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. At the same time it helps children and families affected by Autism have access to activities that other families in the community take for granted. In Medway it holds a weekly youth group, coffee mornings and evening sessions at Monkey Bizz twice a month, exclusively for MAGIC members, as well as organising a range of activities and days out for families and running holiday play schemes. The website has a wealth of information for local families from issues such as going through the statementing process to tips and advice on food and bedtime routines. It also publishes a regular newsletter with local and national information. This winter the group are raising funds by asking the local community to donate unwanted gold or silver jewellery such as odd earrings, broken chains or scrap jewellery as part of its 'Going for Gold' campaign. For information on MAGIC visit www.medway-magic. org, email medway-magic@ blueyonder.co.uk or call their volunteers on 01634 326230.
