Inside for everyone to enjoy is a visual feast; literally, 100+ pieces of fashion from 45 design students whose collections were carefully scrutinized and selected by a panel of fashion industry experts. I encourage you to linger on each page, to get up close to see the details, and take time to examine the photographs taken by students, many of which were also the originators of the fashion design work on view. Spring 2020 was wildly unusual for everyone as the COVID-19 pandemic brought disruption and adversity. It also brought a sense of community and encouraged us to think bigger; to refresh and reinvent our plans for delivering the annual Fashion Show. In less than four weeks, a virtual show was conceived, produced, managed, and delivered by our students on YouTube with over 6,000 views in its frst 10 days online. Our Lookbook 2020 is part of this re-imagined portfolio. We are indebted to this year’s students who raised their game. In doing so, they publicly demonstrated the value of having active agility, ambition, courage, creativity, passion, skill, and teamwork capabilities. Inside you will also see a series of special awards acknowledgments. These were made possible by our generous donors who endorsed the prize money provided to students. On behalf of the School of Fashion, I ofer our deepest thanks to each and every one. Finally, I would like to recognize STOLL, a leader in fat-knitting machine technology for over 145 years. STOLL was inducted into the KSU School of Fashion Hall of Fame. Not only does it have a pioneering reputation in the global fashion industry, STOLL is known for its innovation and ingenuity. It leads by example and continues to serve as a committed collaborator in our prototypical KnitLAB where Kent State University students learn essential design, innovation, and manufacturing skills.

of Fashion. With the direction of Dr. Louise Valentine and the incredible innovators at the university, we encouraged designers to use this new platform to push their creative limit further, resulting in an unprecedented global event. This would not have been possible without the dedication and precision of the production team, our global faculty and colleagues, and the resilient class of 2020.

celebrating the gifts of isabel toledo: fashion is what time looks like Fashion Show 2.0 is a celebration of the innovation and talents of the future and also a moment to honor the legacy and spirit of the remarkable Isabel Toledo who passed away in 2019. Isabel and her artist husband Ruben led a creative life together impacting fashion, design, theatre, advertising and product design. Best known for the stunning dress and coat worn by Michelle Obama for President Obama’s 2009 inauguration, Isabel’s designs transcend traditional categories and popular trends. Her garments are meticulously constructed and fuid in their elegance. Isabel never waived from her authentic voice and as such, embodies the values we hope our students will embrace as they move into the next phase of their careers. In 2000, Ruben and Isabel Toledo arrived in Kent to fnish the installation details of their exhibition Ruben and Isabel Toledo: A Marriage of Art and Fashion at the KSU Museum. While visiting campus, they had the opportunity to spend time with faculty, students and the general public. Linda Ohrn-McDaniel, a current professor at the School of Fashion, had just started working at the school when the Toledo’s visited. She vividly remembers their energetic conversations and the generosity they showed as they engaged with students, as well as scenes of Ruben and Isabel with children, drawing on large scrolls of paper laid on the foor. As they traveled around the globe, Ruben and Isabel were fercely present with whomever they met—inviting everyone to join their circle of creativity. Isabel and Ruben showed us how a true, and absolute creative life, can be lived without pretense or compromise, and well beyond traditional art and fashion industries.
Isabel is heralded as a “designer’s designer” for her independent, innovative process, work and creative approach to thinking and designing. While she took classes at Parsons and FIT, her true education was an internship at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) under the legendary Diana Vreeland. Here, she learned fashion “from the inside out.” Her frst runway show in 1986 featured denim dresses (the only fabric she could aford) and was an immediate sensation. From there, she and Ruben grew the business through runway shows (until they were no longer practical), their loyal clients and through their interesting adventures and creative partnerships. Their adventures included a creative directorship at Anne Klein, collaborations with Target, Lane Bryant, PayLess Shoes, Mac Cosmetics, Broadway theatre productions, even Balanchine’s Nutcracker for the Miami Ballet. As the late fashion journalist Amy Spindler once wrote, “Only great designers can dispense with themes and theatrics and let the work speak instead. Ms. Toledo does just that, letting fashion itself be the theme.” Sarah Rogers KSU Museum Director Former frst lady, Michelle Obama, attends President Barrack Obama’s Inauguration in 2009 wearing a light green coat and dress designed by Toledo.
