LAW FAIR KSLS

2020

Welcome to the annual University of Kent Law Fair brochure! The Law Fair provides the perfect opportunity to explore your career options and network with legal professionals. A number of educational providers are also attending to offer valuable insight into the various routes graduates can take to further their legal career. This year for the first time, there will be workshops hosted by a number of organisations to give an insight into the research and application process, but also to explain any additional training options for graduates. Because this year is (very) different from other years, the law fair will take place on the virtual platform Hopin. Don’t worry though, this platform gives you plenty of opportunities to network with representatives and ask questions. You will receive a user guide for the virtual platform that explains exactly how to use the platform to your advantage. If you have any more questions about the usage of this platform, please do not hesitate to email us at lawfair@ksls.co.uk.

It is important to prepare for a law fair and know who you are speaking to, so make sure you come do your research and come with a plan. Kent Student Law Society will be hosting a talk showing you "How to prepare for a Law Fair” with Kent Law School Alumnus Matthew Speed from Pinsent Masons on 3 November from 18:00-20:00, which you can sign up through the Hopin platform event or through the link in our Instagram bio. Make sure you come along to find out how you can make the most of the Law Fair, and use this brochure to get an insight into which firms, organisations and legal professionals are attending. We hope that you will enjoy the law fair and you gain lots of insight from it in order to make informed steps about your career. Any questions or comments are always welcome, just email us! Macfarlanes is a distinctive London-based law firm, focused on its clients and on delivering excellence in the international legal market. The firm is known for the quality of its work; not just in dealing with the full range of corporate and commercial matters, but in advising clients on their private affairs as well.

Macfarlanes has made a deliberate choice to remain smaller than many of its peers. The cohesive nature of the firm means that clients benefit from collective experience and close-knit teams. The firm has decided against growth at the expense of quality, against size at the expense of efficiency and agility. So whilst large enough to advise on the most complex matters, the firm is also small enough to ensure that its people and work are exceptional, without fail.

Main areas of work Our main practice areas are: commercial, competition, corporate and M&A, derivatives and trading, employment, finance, financial services regulation, investment management, litigation and dispute resolution, pensions, private client, private equity, real estate, restructuring and insolvency and tax.

Who we’re looking for? At Macfarlanes, we don’t have any preconceptions about who you are or where you’re from. We want people who are academically strong, with determination and drive. However, we aren’t looking for any particular educational background. For us, it’s your potential that really counts. We’ll want to see that you have resilience, determination and exceptional communication skills. You must be confident when it comes to giving advice and making decisions. Most of all, we are looking for people who will relish the chance to work alongside some of the world’s most successful and ambitious businesses and individuals.

We expect you to have a 2:1 degree or above – that could be in law or in another subject. Find out more at: https://www.macfarlanes.com/join-us/traineesolicitors/about-us/

Jennifer Draper (Robinson Allfree)

As a student approaching the end of my degree I had not yet obtained a training contract. Upon leaving university I decided to join a local law firm working on reception then as a legal secretary. 1.5 years later, I began training via CILEx which meant I could remain in the family department without the need for various seats. I have gone on to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive, I have also completed a Masters in Legal Practice (LLM/LPC) alongside my Professional Skills Course and I will shortly cross-qualify to be admitted to the roll of solicitors. I am here to answer any questions you have about alternative routes into law, or family law in general.

The Bar Council – the representative body for all barristers – and the Inns of Court have teamed up to inform students about opportunities at the Bar. Non-law graduates will need to take the GDL, while both law and non law graduates must take the Bar Vocational Course. Scholarships for these courses are available from the Inns and from course providers. The Inns offer a total of £5 million for scholarships each year, and awards range from £500 to £19,000. There are some changes to the qualification process for the Bar from 2020, so please do see the Bar Standards Board website (below) for further information. All students wishing to become a barrister will need to undertake pupillage, which is a form of ‘on-the-job’ training, split into a nonpractising period and a practising period. Pupillage has a highly competitive application process, so you should be as proactive as possible to give yourself the best possible chance of success: seek out mini-pupillages (available opportunities are posted on the Chambers Student Guide) and work experience, undertake court visits, and pursue public speaking or debating opportunities. The Bar Council also holds a Pupillage Fair in Autumn of each year, to enable students to network with pupillage providers and barristers from a wide range of practice areas. Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities offered by the Inns – you must be a member of an Inn before you can qualify as a barrister – so do browse their websites for events. For more information, visit: https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/ qualifying-as-a-barrister/ https://www.barcouncil.org.uk/careers

Sophie Vigneron Co-Director of Graduate Studies I studied my UG and LLM in Strasbourg and Nancy (France) before coming to Kent in 2000, in order to complete my joint PhD under the supervision of Professor Samuel. I loved the community, friendship, and of course, the critical approach to law, in my case comparative law. I chose to stay here and have since developed my research, not only in comparative law but also in cultural heritage law which I teach at both UG and PG level.

The Kent LLM is a programme with a flexible structure that allows students to choose module to build their specialisation: international commercial law, intellectual property, international environmental law and policy, law and health, criminal justice, international criminal justice, international law, and human rights. The programme also builds in interdisciplinarity by letting students choose modules in other disciplines, for example politics, and criminology if they wish to do so. Our flexible structure gives students the opportunity to focus on courses that are of interest for their professional development while at the same time providing for a detailed knowledge and high level of understanding of a range of specialised subject areas. Our teachers offer a distinctive critical approach, we strongly encourage our students to study law in its social, economic and political context, to ask questions about why law is the way it is, and to relate it to other important aspects of society like who holds power, why are certain stories told/not told about law and about the way that the world works. This provides students with not only an excellent knowledge of the law but also with a systematic understanding of the institutional structures, and particular contexts in which the law operates. The LLM also provides students with the ability to undertake supervised research on an agreed topic in law which enables them to produce original and evaluative work that meets high standards of scholarship. Finally, the LLM community at Kent is an important part of the law school and contributes to its vibrant and diverse community. Students come from all over the world and contribute to making Kent a special place to study and live in. Find out more at: https://www.kent.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate

"This year we founded the newest law society here at KLS, Empowering Womxn in Law, in order to give students a safe platform to explore and discuss issues of feminism and intersectionality as they pertain to the law, the legal system, and the legal profession. We place a heavy emphasis on developing critical thinking and writing skills by encouraging students to submit writing pieces to our weekly newsletter that’s circulated to our members, ‘The F Word’. We aim to encourage open, meaningful conversations around controversial topics in order to normalise them, making it easier for students to seek support, and to work toward making tangible societal change. All are welcome, regardless of your background or identity! "

Our aim this year is to provide insightful perspectives of the law and a career in law. In order to achieve this, we’re hosting virtual panel events focused on diversity and commercial law, including trainees and organisation leaders, as well as exclusive resources provided by our partners. Also, we will host virtual events focused on pertinent aspects of the law, considering environmental law, mental health law, human rights & exploitation, and housing law. Our biggest event of the year is the Kent Critical Annual Conference, which encourages many from Kent and beyond to submit a response to a legally focused statement. The Kent International Law Society encourages law students to think critically about legal developments outside of the United Kingdom and the way in which these events are shaping the world and our legal education here at Kent. The critique of the systems, protocols, and processes that inform the global landscape is a key component of the society. To further the international legal education of our members, KILS provides opportunities for students to participate in many different events such as Alternative Dispute Resolution competitions and visits to international legal bodies like the International Criminal Court.

36

Kent Law Temple Society or KLTS, is the University’s oldest law society. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. The society is dedicated to helping students that are wanting to pursue a career in advocacy. Legal advocacy begins when you meet a client, and continues as you research the case, prepare documents for trial and finally present the case in court. KLTS offers a mentorship program as well workshops that will help you learn these components of advocacy and provide opportunities for you to experience them in mock legal scenarios. We also host a series of educational talks where you can learn about the different fields of advocacy that you can pursue. The society keeps its members connected through its regularly updated social media, website and weekly newsletter.
