KENT Style ALFRESCO DINING

Alfresco Dining Ideas

T

he term ‘alfresco’ is acquired from the Mediterranean continent meaning to take in the open air. Nothing expresses summer quite so definitively as enjoying a meal out of doors. Discover some stylish alfresco dining ideas to transform any entertainment area; whether a compact and bijou terrace or a large country garden.

Successful lighting is key especially if your social gathering is going to extend from day to evening time. For a vintage inspired style coordinate and hang a festoon of LED lights in themed colours and introduce glass hurricane lanterns and tea lights to set the atmosphere. If you require a more contemporary style use a statement candelabra as a focal point on the table creating a sense of drama.

Choose a colour coordinated tablecloth to suit the theme and make sure to secure the corners of the cloth by using a set of clips or weights. In terms of tableware the quality is very much dictated according to the formality of the occasion. Generally for picnics melamine ware is both practical and durable and available in a variety of styles, collections and colour

combinations; use bright handled cutlery for greater visual impact and present together in a ceramic holder or vase to maintain a sense of informality. For that ultimate finesse include crisp linen napkins and personalised name cards for your guests. Complete the transformation with beautiful and vibrant fresh flowers for your perfect summer oasis.

From chic handbags, dramatic hats, micro-sun glasses and statement jewellery ensure that you remain on trend. Add a touch of utilitarian glamour to any outfit with a chic leather belt bag, available in a range of styles to suit all; if you prefer to over share then transparent bags and purses are for you, with some great examples from Céline, Maison Margiela, Chanel and Valentino. Bag silhouettes were revamped in geometric forms including circles at Dolce & Gabana, stars at Mugler and spheres at Céline. Hats reflected the ever changing world climates with Karl Lagerfeld reinventing Perspex rain hats for Chanel with a contemporary twist: to be worn with a full face of makeup and extravagant crystal earrings. Alternatively dramatic and super sized sun hats were presented as the ideal set piece for the beach – protecting your entire body from the sun. Micro-sunglasses remain very much in contention this summer with

the retro sleek and slender shades previewing for Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Prada; also popular are the wraparound designs and mirrored lenses which promote a space age vibe alongside a classic look. Shoulder length statement earrings continue to feature as the must-have jewellery item and total transparency is the apparent theme with sensational translucent chandelier earrings, oversized bejewelled hoops and dramatic baroque style cross earrings reigning supreme. Anklets remain ever popular this season, review Anna Sui’s romantic boho-chic anklets with trinkets and colourful beads, as well as Victoria Beckham’s beautiful and elegant ankle bracelets for a more refined option.

WHITSTABLE STOVE SHOP “Ban the log burner!”

R

eading past the headline: “Ban the log burner!” So, more or less, went the headlines lately. But, what does Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, actually think? Here’s what he actually says: “That’s why I’m supporting this campaign, and the industry’s efforts, to clean up our filthy air. If you have to burn wood this winter, make sure you use the right fuel and the right kit – you can make a huge difference.” Read past the headline to the full articles in the newspapers and other media and you’ll see that what the furore comes down to is the fact that many people are burning improperly seasoned logs, with too much moisture content, in older, inefficient stoves and on open fires. And have you noticed how much smoke is produced when burning fresh garden waste and other rubbish on bonfires. Having a BBQ this weekend? Please warn the neighbours if they have laundry hanging out to dry. The new generation of log burners and pellet

30

stoves arriving on the market - even now, in advance of the deadline – are designed to meet Eco Design Ready standards and are promoted by the Stove industry Alliance and DEFRA. They are almost as efficient as the electricity supplied to the socket in your wall. When it comes to electricity supply, you’ll more than likely be aware that transmission and distribution losses mean that electricity is not 100% efficiently delivered to the point of use. So, decent fuels, for example wellseasoned or kiln dried logs, burnt in a modern log burning stove, or dried wood pellets in a highly efficient pellet stove, are part of the solution to cleaning up the air, not the problem; they’re sustainable fuels and with multiple new trees planted to replace those burned, close to or better than, carbon neutral. No fossil fuel can boast that. We hope to see you in Whitstable Stove Shop for your stove and fuel purchases later. www.whitstablestoveshop.co.uk

KENT Style NATIONAL TRUST

A GAME OF BOWLS

by painter John Singer Sargent

A

Game of Bowls depicts the house in 1889, with its American tenant at the time Mary Lincoln ‘Queen’ Palmer and her daughter Elsie enjoying a game of bowls on the North Lawn with their friends, including Singer Sargent’s sister Violet. The painting became available for a private sale brokered by Sotheby’s and the necessary funds were raised thanks to funding from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, who donated £175,000, and Art Fund, who donated £100,000. A further £75,000 was raised thanks to the generosity of visitors and supporters of Ightham Mote. The painting is an example of Sargent in his experimental mode. It is a large-scale landscape in the English manner, but painted in a modernist French style. Due to the size of the painting, it was clearly composed with exhibition in mind, and it appeared in Joe Comyns Carr’s New Gallery the year after it was painted.

48

A friend and protégé of Claude Monet and a member of the British avant-garde, Sargent’s work was yet to be fully accepted by either critics or the public at the time A Game of Bowls was painted. As with many of his previous pictures, this was classed as ‘eccentric’. Bernadette Gillow, General Manager at Ightham Mote, commented: “We are so delighted to secure this wonderful portrayal of a moment in Ightham Mote’s history for our visitors. “I would like to extend my immense gratitude to the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Art Fund for their sizeable contributions to our fundraising campaign, but also notably to our visitors and supporters for recognising the significance of keeping A Game of Bowls at Ightham Mote and for giving so generously. I must also thank the property team of staff and volunteers for their vigorous championing of the cause.”

KENT Style FITNESS

sWIMMING BABY AQUATICS

S

wimming is one of the nation’s most popular activities and is an important life skill encouraging people to keep fit, relax and have fun in the process. Teaching your baby to swim Babies have a natural affinity with water and swimming is an ideal physical activity for a baby due to the nature of buoyancy, allowing the most independent freedom that your infant can experience before developing motor skills. Learning to swim should be a happy and positive experience for both parent and child; always be guided by your parental instincts. Baby’s natural ability All babies learn to swim through repetitive teaching, word association and play, and naturally make rhythmical and co-ordinated movements in their first few weeks; infants also inhibit their own breathing underwater, however this reflex lessens after about six months as they start to take control of their own breathing when going underwater. Choosing a swimming programme Attend a reputable baby aquatic

60

programme which provides the opportunity for parent and child to bond in a warm, quiet and secure environment. A life-long love of water and enjoyment of swimming are best developed through confident and loving handling of your baby by swimming with them and by engendering gentle and progressive techniques to ultimately establish independent swimming, without ever resorting to forceful conditioning. Foster the learning to swim process with positivity and praise, incorporating games and fun activities as you nurture the bond with your infant. There are many benefits of introducing your baby to the aquatic environment at an early age which are evident in the social, physical and psychological developments of your child. Babies who develop their swimming abilities are inclined to be more alert for their age with an improved sleeping pattern and increased appetite. Additionally, just as with adults, swimming improves the cardiorespiratory function of babies and their general health.

This is edged by wedge-shaped bumpers incorporating sizeable inlets with a U-shaped clip separating their exterior and interior areas, a honeycomb grille and separate openings which guide a portion of the airflow into the wheel housings, where it flows past the wheels.
