It is the capital of Austria and is located in the north-eastern region of the country and the Danube Canal flows through the city centre. Vienna is the country’s political, economic, cultural and administrative centre and is host to many international organisations including the United Nations and OPEC; it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Vienna’s position at the heart of Central Europe predisposes it to being an ideal base from which to explore cities such as Prague, Bratislava, Budapest,

Zagreb, Salzburg and Munich. This compact city boasts an astonishing array of palaces, monuments, churches, museums and parks; it represents a fascinating mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Baroque. Admire the Schönbrunn Palace and gardens, the former summer residence of the imperial family – built on a scale to rival the Palace of Versailles. The symmetrical architecture is complemented by the formal gardens with statues and fountains. Explore the Schönbrunn state rooms epitomised by Rococo decorative schemes as devised by Nikolaus Pacassi.

A star view must be the Vieux – Lacque Room which is decorated with exquisite oriental lacquered panels, Marie Theresa remodelled this room as a memorial to her much loved husband following his sudden death; and the Neo – Classical Gloriette, set upon the hill behind the palace showcases as Schönbrunn’s crowning glory. Be impressed by the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral), Vienna’s most iconic cathedral – a masterpiece of Gothic architecture; visit the MuseumsQuartier Wien which has over twenty established cultural institutions, alongside a significant variety of restaurants, cafés and shops. Notably the Leopald Museum houses over 5,000 works of art including the world’s largest collection of Egon Schiele’s works, as well as Expressionist paintings and Austrian inter – war works of art. Further highlights range from an exhibition on Secessionism and Art Nouveau and major works by Gustav Klimt. Experience the sensational Wiener Festwochen during the May/June period – Vienna’s greatest festival which features operas, plays and performing arts; witness the impressive State Opera House or Staatsoper, with

its superb marble staircase and remarkable statue embellishments of the seven liberal arts by Josef Gasser. The State Opera continues to enjoy a dominant reputation. Be enthralled by the Spanische Reitschule now known as the Winter Riding School, with its column structures, elaborate interior plasterwork, chandeliers and coffered ceiling; and be amazed by the Lipizzaner horses renowned for their grace and stamina as they perform with their riders, displaying feats of artistry and athleticism as part of a carefully orchestrated ballet. The Burgtheater is doubtless the most prestigious theatre in Vienna, the Renaissance – style building features the original Grand Staircases – each is a mirror image of the other. The imposing ceiling frescoes by the Klimt brothers and Franz Matsch cover the north and south wings, with another, the fabulous Der Thespiskarren by Gustav Klimt, depicting Thespis, the first performer of a Greek Tragedy. A visit to the city would not be complete without a tram ride, which offers an excellent view of Vienna as well as a nostalgic journey into the city’s past. affected by a property’s light – both natural and artificial. Consequently the large planes of a room notably the walls and floor are the most challenging to get right, and although a block of colour on a paint chart may appear to be perfect, when applied to a large expanse of walls the overall effect may be very different both in appearance and character. Select a monochromatic palette of neutral tones such as black, white,

ransform your home this summer with creative and adventurous colour schemes which are set to be significantly bolder this year introducing navy, violet and emerald green. Colour is certainly a major factor in respect of the decorative element of design and it is necessary to consider texture, and to a lesser extent pattern in relation to this. It is essential to assess how colour will be

grey, cream and taupe which all provide an infinite range of variety creating the perfect design scope to inject the strong tones relevant this year. The right colour will create a new and dynamic level of impact; it is not necessary to use more than one accent colour in a scheme as this will serve to dilute the effect. Generally use colour proportionately for the greatest impression – less is more where stronger colours are concerned.

The art of design is about discovering a range of textures and colours which are compatible. Experiment with samples – fabrics, flooring and paint and choose textural contrasts which promote a sympathetic result. Similarly, the juxtaposition of mixing antique and contemporary set pieces can achieve a wonderful outcome and inject personality and individuality into a home. Pattern is ideally used sparingly – as with accent colours, for example

SUMMER swimwear Key Design Trends

T

he options for this summer’s swimwear trends include an exceptional range of designs to flatter everyone. The one piece dominates this season offering plunging necklines and high – cut versions and a romantic aesthetic is captured with frills and ruffles. Reflective fabrics have also been incorporated creating an ultra – feminine and glamorous quality. Strappy monokinis that look like bikinis but are in fact one pieces attached by latticework or fabric, portray an altogether more risqué style. Front tied swimsuits are available typically as bikinis but can also be a part of tankinis and monokinis as well, providing a multifunctional asset. One shoulder swimsuits emerge as an updated trend with some designs featuring straps which act as an accent. A popular new season look is represented by crocheted swimwear with tassels creatively applied invoking a sense of fun, although not entirely practical but nevertheless quite sensational.

Activewear swimsuits with sporty style bralettes present as a chic and versatile choice with zip options to counter most requirements. Vintage inspired high waisted two pieces are both iconic and flattering; these were represented on most swimwear runways ensuring its status as an official trend. Mismatched bikini sets proved key this season – although technically any swimsuit can be tastefully interchanged, mismatched and recreated to suit your own requirements and style; many designers however sought to perfectly pair pieces that were not of the same colour or pattern. String bikinis mirroring lingerie are both provocative and stunning in equal measure although not ideal for tanning due to the intricacy of the design, the functionality of the laces does however allow for adjustment. Velvet swimwear, controversial for its impracticality is causing quite a stir on the runways as designers have embraced the fabric extensively producing designs using every possible style combination, the results are a revelation and quite wonderful. KENT Style ROYAL ASCOT

ROYAL ASCOT DRESS CODE STYLE GUIDE FOR 2018

R

oyal Ascot is synonymous with sartorial elegance. This is upheld by their dress code, which invites guests to contribute to an occasion heralded as a major fashion event in its own right. We are delighted to bring you the 2018 Royal Ascot Style Guide, in association with Cunard, to guide and inspire you with what to wear at Royal Ascot in June. In 2017, Royal Ascot successfully welcomed the jumpsuit as an acceptable item of clothing for the Royal Enclosure. Ascot continues to recognise key trends in the everevolving world of fashion. Additions to the official dress code makes socks a requirement for gentlemen and specific necklines detailed as acceptable, or not, across all Enclosures. Ladies are kindly reminded that formal daywear is a requirement in the Royal Enclosure. Dresses and skirts should be of modest length defined as falling just above the knee or longer.

Dresses and tops should have straps of one inch or greater. Jackets and pashminas may be worn but dresses and tops underneath should still comply with the Royal Enclosure dress code. A gentleman may remove his top hat within a restaurant, a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Hats may also be removed within any enclosed external seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden. The customisation of top hats (with, for example, coloured ribbons or bands) is not permitted in the Royal Enclosure. Girls (aged 10-17) should dress in accordance with the Ladies’ dress code. However, they may wear a headpiece or fascinator as an alternative to a hat, without any size restriction. Boys (aged 10-17) should either dress in accordance with the gentlemen’s dress code; or alternatively may wear a darkcoloured lounge suit with a shirt.

KENT Style Wimbledon

Wimbledon Championships HISTORY, fashion and tradition

T

he Championships, Wimbledon, or just Wimbledon as it is more commonly referred to, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and arguably the most famous. Since the first tournament 125 years ago in 1877, The Championships have been hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London and take place over two weeks in late June – early July. Of the four major annual tennis tournaments known as the ‘Grand Slams’, Wimbledon is the only one to still be played on grass, which is where the name lawn tennis originated. Trophies and prize money Following the completion of the five major competitions the winners are presented with the traditional Wimbledon trophies. Having had to replace both the Field Cup in 1883 and the Challenge Cup in 1886, the All England Club decided that future trophies should no longer become property of the Championship

winners, who would instead receive a replica of the trophy whilst the originals were housed in the Wimbledon museum. Wimbledon Fashion The accepted outfit of choice for Wimbledon players in the nineteenth century was plain white long-sleeved shirts and trousers for men and full-length corseted white dresses and hats for women. It was not until the 1920s and 1930s that the players, and particularly the female players, began to experiment with their clothing. Wimbledon traditions Although much has changed since the Wimbledon Championships were first introduced in 1887, today when we think of Wimbledon fortnight there are a number of traditional images that automatically spring to mind; including the obligatory strawberries and cream, the white or almost all white dress code which is still a requirement, and the strong ties with the Royal family to name but a few.

FITNESS TIPS GET IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER

D

oes the thought of getting changed into shorts or a swimsuit cause you concern? With these fitness tips, there’s still time to get in summerready shape without going on a crash diet. MAKE A SMALL CHANGE AND STICK TO IT Set yourself one goal at a time. Maybe it’s removing energy drinks from your lunch or moving for five minutes a day. Just make it attainable and commit to it. Once you master that first goal, you can add another to it, and so on. BE REALISTIC As much as we’d all love to drop ten pounds in a week, especially as summer approaches, it’s not very realistic without going to extreme measures. Instead, strive to lose one percent of your body weight a week. That’s a healthy goal. WATCH YOUR CALORIES Nutrition is more than half the battle in weight loss. And while you don’t have to obsess over every bite, you do need to be aware of how many calories you’re consuming.

EAT REAL FOOD Fresh fruits and vegetables are higher in nutrients than processed meals, plus they are rich in fibre, which will keep you feeling fuller for longer. Lean meats like turkey are high in protein and will help you burn more fat while building muscle mass. And yes, you can put some steak on the grill, just eat it in moderation.

KENT Style NUTRITION

The Summer Diet Eat, Live, Relax

S

ummer is upon us with the prospect of long overdue holidays with friends and family. The promise of beach filled days and outdoor activities inspire us to remain nutritionally healthy with a renewed focus on the fabulous seasonal foods available to us. Remain hydrated Water is a crucial component to the summer experience in so many ways. It accounts for approximately 60% of the human body making it such an essential fluid. Water promotes many physiological processes including digestion and regulates the body’s internal temperature through perspiration. Warmer summer temperatures require our bodies to work harder to remain cool, resulting in an increased loss of hydration. Ensure that you maintain your fluid balance. Summer foods There is an infinite range and variety of fresh produce on offer throughout the summer months. Add tomatoes, water melon and strawberries to dishes to increase flavour to your barbeque spreads and substitute ice-cream for a cool cup of berry-topped frozen yogurt.

66

The summer diet At any summer gathering be mindful of portion sizes and incorporate healthy and fibrous foods such as kale salad or summer squash before indulging in a hot dog or burger. Consuming low-calorie options before a calorie dense food will cause you to eat less of the not so healthy item. Surround yourself with like minded people that support and share your health goals, evolve and maintain new eating habits with the creation of healthy picnics and embrace exercise. Relaxation The action-packed summer days can contribute to the feeling that sleep is almost unnecessary. You may find yourself staying up later than usual as the days are longer or taking mid-afternoon naps to prepare for an evening dinner party. However, this sporadic sleep pattern can lead to exhaustion if it interrupts your normal sleep schedule. Continue to aim for eight hours of sleep per night; this prolonged season provides a prime opportunity to rejuvenate and develop a healthy sleep routine.

raw foods. Include a wide variety of fruit and vegetables in your diet and opt for salads, smoothies and juices. Hair care Due to the intensity of the summer heat, the scalp can become more sensitive at this time attracting pollutants; it is therefore necessary to use a deep cleansing shampoo on a regular basis. Conditioning Treat your hair to a nourishing deep conditioning oil product in order to restore it to a healthy state. Massage a recommended treatment into your hair and scalp and wrap with a warm towel leaving for the specified time before washing the oil away; revealing visibly softened and replenished hair. Make-up Adapt your make-up style to the season using lighter palette shades, from bronzing powder and eye shadow to lipstick. Create and enhance your perfect summer look. Applying bronzer Highlight the natural contours of your skin and apply to your forehead, cheekbones and near to your mouth for extra definition. Use bronzer sparingly for maximum impact.

he summer heat can adversely affect your skin, potentially causing irregular discolouration and ultimately fine lines and wrinkles. Use a compatible moisturiser for your skin type which also acts as a natural barrier against the sun and pollutants. Keep hydrated It is essential to maintain a healthy body moisture balance to ensure against dehydration. Ideally your fluid intake should include 2 -3 litres of water per day and also make sure to incorporate fruit juices. Use sunscreen Protect your skin against the sun by using a high waterproof SPF 30+ sunscreen, and apply generously; then re-apply at regular intervals. Always remember that prevention is better than cure. Follow a healthy diet During the summertime it is ideal to increase your intake of natural and

BMW

Electric mobility arrives at the core of BMW CONCEPT iX3

T

he BMW Concept iX3 underscores the BMW Group’s resolve to further strengthen its leading position in the field of electric mobility. A key benefit of this electric drive technology of the future is the grouping together of the electric motor, transmission and power electronics within a new, separate electric drive component. This fresh package of technology brings considerable advances in terms of performance characteristics, operating range, weight, packaging space and flexibility – and will be making its debut in the purely electrically-driven SAV. The unparalleled technological expertise of BMW i has also played a prominent role in the development of the fifth-generation electric drive system, providing further evidence of BMW i as a nerve centre for sustainable mobility. The transfer of the drive system technology originally developed for BMW i cars into vehicles from the BMW Group’s core brands is entering a new dimension here.
