The annual excitement is here! A year of planning and preparation is bursting into the bloom of art and music and fellowship that is the Kentuck Festival of the Arts. We’ve garnered some direct and some implicit praise this year – a Top Ten Festival in the U.S. per the American Style poll, the “Best in Bama” Festival for the readers of Alabama, a 25% increase in the number of artists applying to show with us. We’ve also had our hearts broken by the loss of Georgine Clarke and Carolyn Fritz, yet been comforted to see the influence of those two extraordinary women continue to bear fruit in the work and dedicated service of the many people they inspired and mentored. To everything there is indeed a season. Let’s make this our season of joy, and remembrance.

Volunteer Appreciation Night November 1 at Kentuck Art Center
Presenting the Kentuck Festival of the Arts takes the work of hundreds of volunteers who make sure that the park is ready to welcome artists and visitors alike, and that everything possible is done to show all of our guests that we appreciate them and their support. We thank and celebrate all the volunteers—many of whom have served for decades, others new this year—who make Kentuck a vibrant reality! To show our appreciation in a more tangible way, we invite all our volunteers to Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Kentuck Art Center on November 1, from 5 to 9 p.m., in conjunction with Art Night.

We dedicate the 2012 Kentuck Festival of the Arts to the memory of Kentuck’s founding director Georgine Clarke and of long-time volunteer Carolyn Fritz, both of whom passed away in May of this year after lengthy illnesses.
Georgine Clarke
Georgine lives on in the heart of every person whose life she enlarged with her vision, her passion, her encouragement, and her ceaseless hard work on behalf of artists and the arts. Carolyn Fritz Carolyn was a mainstay and stalwart friend of Kentuck for over twenty years. Among many other ways of serving, she recruited and led with her own non-stop efforts the group of volunteers who made Kentuck for Kids a hallmark of the festival and a happy memory for generations of children. We also dedicate this festival to the memory of the artist “Mr. Imagination,” Gregory Warmack, who passed away on May 30, 2012 after a brief illness.
Patron Program and Patron Hospitality Pavilion Visitors can enjoy an additional dimension of participation in the festival through the Patron Purchase Program. Depending on the level of patronage chosen—Patron, Collector, or Benefactor—participants receive weekend festival passes, early-bird shopping privileges, invitations to special events, Kentuck Bucks (vouchers for purchasing art from festival exhibitors), a patron ribbon to award to a favorite artist, and other amenities including unlimited admission to the Patron Hospitality Pavilion throughout the festival. For more information, go to www.kentuck.org/ patronpage.html or come to the table at the Patron Hospitality Pavilion entrance.

Festival Information and Kentuck Merchandise The Festival Information Booth
Lost & Found Last year’s found items and this year’s will be in a box at Festival Information.
and sales of 41st Annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts merchandise are housed in the stone building you’ll see straight ahead as you enter the gate into the Festival. Long- and short-sleeved Festival T-shirts, Kentuck ball caps, and Kentuck aprons will be available for purchase as supplies last.
First Aid Provided by NorthStar Paramedic, located near the festival entrance.
Restrooms Porta-potties are available at several
locations around the park. We regret it, but the permanent restrooms in the park cannot be used during festival weekend because the sewer line cannot handle the amount of traffic the festival generates.
Diaper-Changing Area
We’ve set up a sheltered table and dedicated trash can directly behind the Festival Information building for parents who need to change their children’s diapers. Parents will need to provide all changing supplies and safety equipment.
Shipping Here from out of town or sending art to
distant friends? Have your treasures shipped by Shipworks, sponsored by the Friends of Historic Northport. As you face the information booth, the shipping table is on the left of the building.
Rest Easy
“Meet Me” Location
We’re placing hay bales throughout the park to provide places to rest and reflect. Don’t hesitate to “set a spell.”
Point out the “Meet Me Here” sign with the smiley face near Festival Information to your children or companions and have a place to reunite if you get separated or take different paths for a while.
Restrictions
We do have some restrictions in the park: no pets; no alcohol; no smoking; no riding of bicycles, scooters, skateboards; no firearms.

Demonstrating Artists 2012
Keeping awareness of traditional craft alive Giving traditional craft contemporary style Kentuck began as a Northport centennial celebration featuring reenactments and demonstrations of southern folkways. While the festival has expanded both in size and scope over its 41-year history, we continue to value the work of traditional and contemporary artisans. Their work at Kentuck helps bring awareness of these crafts to new generations. Throughout the Festival, throughout the park, Kentuck’s Demonstrating Artists show the techniques of their work. These artists include members of local craft guilds and university students as well as visiting artists from around the state and nation. Many offer the opportunity for you to try your hand in their medium!
Look for booths with these signs to see artisans doing their work and find interactive fun. Alabama Folk Arts Master Teacher Demonstrating Artist

KENTUCK FOR KIDS Engaging children in the thrill of creating art and craft with their own hands is the guiding goal of Kentuck for Kids. In the center of the Festival and in some other locations throughout the park, volunteers provide children and their parents with hands-on art and building adventures— • befriending a new musical instrument at the musical petting zoo, • drawing a self-portrait, • shaping clay, • nailing together a birdhouse, • tie-dying fabric, • working with fiber, • marbling paper, • crafting cornhusk dolls, • impressing and stamping paper. lways something interesting, and A always something to take home and treasure for a while! Children also can choose to be the canvas for custom face painting to celebrate their personalities or favorite animals, teams, or flowers. The Kentuck for Kids area is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., opening an hour after and closing an hour before the rest of the Festival. Children must be accompanied by an adult or by a responsible teen, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment. All activities are free, and some have an additional component (for example, tie-dying a t-shirt instead of a bandana) available for a reasonable fee. Please remember that creativity can be messy, and the dyes used for tie-dying are permanent. Bring your kids to the park in clothes and shoes that they don’t have to worry about keeping clean. Kentuck for Kids is made possible by the dedicated volunteers and groups that give their time to the Festival. In addition to the core Kentuck for Kids volunteers, groups that enrich children’s Festival experience and appreciation for the making of art include the Children’s Hands-on Museum, the Tuscaloosa Symphony Guild, the Alabama Blues Project, Habitat for Humanity, University of Alabama book arts and ceramics students, the Kentuck Clay Co-op, the Alabama Art Kitchen, the West Alabama Fiber Guild, and the West Alabama Woodworkers Association. This year, Kentuck for Kids is a particular gift of love as we honor the memory and legacy of Carolyn Fritz, the tireless volunteer who led Kentuck for Kids for over 20 years, who passed away this spring. Members of Carolyn’s long-term corps of volunteers who are leading Kentuck for Kids this year are Joanna Jacobs, Pam Askew, Kathy Helm, Suzanne Henson, Stephanie Jacobs, and Carolyn’s partner in all things, Joe Fritz.

ANNUAL KENTUCK FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS 2012
MUSIC & STORYTELLING The musical and spoken word performances at Kentuck this year draw from deep and diverse sources of Southern culture, from African drumming to Celtic fiddling, bluegrass to zydeco, hot New Orleans jazz to gospel, 21st-century songwriting to Sacred Harp a cappella singing. Performances will alternate on two stages on opposite sides of the park as always, but with a difference this year: the Festival Acoustic Venue will present unplugged musicality and engrossing storytelling in an intimate theatre-in-the-round setting.
