Wildcats: It is an honor for me to welcome you all to the Big Blue Nation! The community you have become a part of will bring you new friendships, amazing opportunities, and inevitable success, but your first year on campus will be a lot to handle. Acclimating to your new home here in Lexington will be exciting and challenging; however, I have a few pieces of advice to help you navigate through your time here at UK. First, invest. Invest in everything it means to be a Wildcat. Go to K-Week, eat pancakes at CSF at midnight, dance in DanceBlue, and don’t miss a Caturday. You only get four years – that sounds like a lifetime to you right now, but they pass so fast, and you have to make every moment count. By the time you leave here you don’t want to feel like you missed out on something, so get out of your comfort zone and do it all! Second, get involved. Getting to UK was a huge first step, but it’s just that, the first step. There is so much more to this university than going to class. It is imperative that you explore different organizations and opportunities and get involved on campus. Whether it’s through rushing a fraternity or sorority, joining a service organization, or getting involved with Student Government, try something! My time here has been so enriched by my involvement outside of the classroom, and I want you all to experience that as well. Finally, don’t stress. There will be good times, and there will be bad times, but when you are feeling low, always remember to put things into perspective. You are not defined by the number on your transcript but by the impact you have made on those around you. Commit to being the most outstanding member of this campus community you can be, and everything else will fall into place. These four years are too short to waste on worry and stress, and always know that your support network is 30,000 strong. I also want to emphasize that Student Government and I are here for you. If you are having trouble or need advice, my door is always open. It is our job to fix problems, and if you are going through something, there is a good chance that other students are too, so don’t hesitate to let us know. Good luck Wildcats – you got this! On, On, U of K, Michael Hamilton Student Body President 4 | Inside UK

Welcome!

Get ready for some of the best years of your life. Growing up in Lexington, I never thought I’d attend the school in my backyard. Now as I begin my senior year, I can’t picture my last three years anywhere else. So, I want to congratulate you. You’ve already made the best decision by joining the Big Blue Nation. There is nothing like it. My advice to you is say yes. Say yes to new challenges and opportunities. Don’t be afraid to take risks or step out of your comfort zone. Change your major once, change it three times, or don’t change it at all. Join an organization you’re passionate about, whether it be Greek life, campus ministries or service organizations. Venture off campus and explore the uniqueness of Lexington. You have the opportunity to make your next four years your own, but don’t feel like you need to do it all. College is new and it’s different, but there’s nothing like it. The experiences had, the connections made and the knowledge learned is irreplaceable. With each year, you will learn more about yourself and your passions. When you graduate, you will not be the same person you are now. And that is okay. The Kernel has spent the last year gathering information about organizations on campus, what to do around town, and how to become involved. This magazine will give you a sneak peak into what these next few years have to offer, but it’s up to you to make the most of it. In four years, I want you to look back with no regrets. Your time here will fly by. Take in every moment, make the most of each day, and enjoy it all. Good luck! Kristina Rosen Editor in Chief, Inside UK

UK’s new student center opens Written by Rick Childress Designed by McKenna Horsley

W

ith thousands of square feet of student office space, a flashy retail dining center, state-of-the-art entertainment options and countless study and hangout spots, the Student Center hopes to be the central hub of UK culture. “The design team was very intentional about what would augment a sense of community,” said John Herbst, the executive director of the Student Center. Here are some of the highlights:

Gardens, sunshine, fireplaces

Many north campus students will be over-joyed to find out that their walk to class will likely be shortened as the quickest way to Whitehall will be straight through the heart of the Student Center. A commuting student would probably see other students enjoying themselves in one of the many grassy terraces, rooftop gardens or perhaps huddled around an outdoor fireplace in the colder months. The botanical gardens will flank the south side of the center and will extend over to near where Bowman’s Den is now. Large glass windows and skylights dominate the center’s exterior so passing students will probably notice that many rooms are brightened by natural light. “One of the things we heard from the students,” Herbst said, “is we want it to be a transparent transition to the outdoors.”

The cinema

With 4K laser projection and surround sound so good that you “feel” the movie, Herbst said the cinema will be the most technologically advanced in the state. Because of the high-tech cinema and a steady student audience, large film studios like Warner Brothers are even considering doing early-showings of upcoming movies, Herbst said. Late Night Film series will have a new home in the theater.

Dining

Every restaurant in Bowman’s Den— plus a few new ones—will be moved to the new center. An Auntie Anne’s Pretzels is confirmed to be on the second floor, and a fullservice Starbucks will operate out of the bookstore. The already-opened, 750-seat Champions Kitchen will function as the 8 | Inside UK

north campus residential dining option.

The Social Staircase

A cascade of platforms and sitting areas that resembles a sort of modernist rice terrace will function as the center’s main hangout or study spot. The Gatton College of Business has a similar staircase. The space will function as both a walkway and social area—hence the name. Herbst said that along with ample seating there will be power outlets “every three feet” and a new wildcat statue designed by the same artist who made the statue just outside of Bowman’s Den. This staircase may also be one the most eye-catching spaces in the building as the architects designed it to resemble the way water carves Kentucky limestone.

The bookstore

A multi-floor Barnes and Noble will become UK’s permanent bookstore— effectively replacing that temporary, northcampus book barn. Along with necessary textbooks and books by UK faculty, the store will house a full-service Starbucks, a Nike store and an Apple store.

The gym

The Alumni Gym will become the

Johnson Center of north campus—sans rock wall and basketball courts. The gym, which will be completely lighted by a large skylight and tall glass windows, features plenty of free weights and 190 pieces of cardio equipment. A Fitness Lab, where students can make appointments with personal trainers, will also be available. There will be men’s, women’s and gender-inclusive locker rooms.

The Grand Ballroom

The new Grand Ballroom, which will likely be one of the most heavily-utilized spaces in the center, will be able to seat between 800 and 1,000 people at round tables. The Grand Ballroom is one of two ballrooms at the center, but the older Harris Ballroom will likely not open in the spring.

Student offices

Thousands of square feet of open office space will be opened specifically for student-run organizations. Some of this will always be occupied by groups like Student Government and the Student Activities Board. But, Herbst said that much of the space will be made available to active student groups on a year-to-year basis.

Dress to Impress for Free Written By Symfhani Pitts Designed By Jillian Jones

Congratulations, you’ve received a job or landed an interview! It’s time to make a good first impression, but without the appropriate professional clothes or the money to buy a whole new outfit, how can you dress to impress? The Wildcat Wardrobe has your answer.

Wildcat Wardrobe is a clothing service created by the University of Kentucky Student Government Association and the Career Center to provide UK students with professional clothing. Every student should take advantage of this clothing service. Why? It’s free and accessible professional clothing for all students. With as little as your student ID, find the perfect outfit, try it on, and take it home free of charge. There’s no need to go from store to store looking for professional clothes when Wildcat Wardrobe offers current styles of shoes, shirts and pants. Students can also donate their lightly used clothing, which is beneficial when it comes time to do a little spring cleaning. Wildcat Wardrobe is in Blazer Hall in room 249. They’re open Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p..m and Mondays/Wednesdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

STYLE ADVICE ON A BUDGET Looking stylish on a budget is simple. For girls, a jersey dress paired with stockings and booties can make for a stylish outfit. An off the shoulder one piece, jeans and flats is another easy, yet chic outfit comfortable enough for class. For guys, opt for a button up shirt, black or tan straight legged pants and a simple pair of shoes. There are other affordable options to find appropriate interview clothes if you’re on a budget. Stores such as H&M, Old Navy and Forever 21 offer clothes ranging from 10-30% percent off or more. If there isn’t a sale happening, there’s always the clearance racks. Clearance racks are filled with overflow or out of season items.

IMAGINE THIS: Two months into your first semester of college you sign up to study abroad in France with twelve peers you’ve never met. At 18 years old, I never thought I would travel or study abroad for the first time during my freshman year spring break, but now I can’t imagine where I would be both academically and personally if I hadn’t. During my twelve day excursion in France, I participated in professional seminars, visited fashion showrooms, and embraced a completely different culture. While on the study tour, my only assignments were to journal and take photographs for my scrapbook. It was after this trip to France when I discovered the possibilities and benefits education abroad programs offer. I formed unexpected, close-knit friendships with peers I barely knew and networked with international fashion designers. I tried new exotic food, struggled to learn basic French expressions, and adapted to a culture unfamiliar from my own.

16 | Inside UK

As I stepped off the plane from a spring break spent in Paris, I didn’t want to imagine not spending my next spring break the same way. Fortunately, the Merchandising, Apparels and Textiles department offers study tours to France and Italy every other year. During spring break of my sophomore year, I was determined to travel to Florence, Italy. Studying abroad is scary, unfamiliar and exciting all at once. Through my past experiences abroad, I’ve realized when I challenge myself to stray from what is comfortable and engage in new perspectives is when I learn the most. What I’m taught in the classroom is beneficial, but what I experience outside the classroom is what’s made my education worthwhile. No textbook or lecture could give me the same confidence, independence, and passion for travel that education abroad experiences have given me. Don’t get me wrong, a semester abroad sounds amazing, but I’d be lying if I said the thought of studying in a foreign country for four months doesn’t still intimidate me. But studying abroad doesn’t have to mean committing to an entire semester. Many colleges and major programs offer embedded programs during winter, summer, and spring breaks where students can travel abroad for a shorter period and still receive school credit.

OTHER Spring Break Ideas CSF Trips Whether you want to travel to a new city, learn to snowboard or lay by the beach this semester, there’s a trip for you. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been to CSF or if you go everyday, these trips are open to all students. 2018 travel destinations were Asheville, Houston, Los Angeles, Florida, Colorado and Israel.

UK Campus Wellness and Recreation:

They offer a spring break trip, in addition to their day and weekend trips throughout the year. In 2018, students traveled to Cumberland, Georgia, for beach backpacking.

Alternative Service Break: These travel opportunities take place during spring break, as well as during the fall, winter, and summer breaks. It’s a fun and fulfilling opportunity for students to travel and volunteer in a new city or different country. In 2018, the trips focused on topics like Domestic Violence, Sustainable Agriculture, Hunger & Homelessness in places like Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Ecuador.

Equestrian Team - Hunt Seat Ranked Top 5 in the nation in 2016, the team has 40 members and most are out of state from Southern California to upstate New York. Watch the team host horse shows at Lakeside Arena in Frankfort or follow them as they travel & compete in Louisville, Georgetown, Cincinnati, and more.

UK Polo is entirely student run & they own all the horses. The team travels from Colorado to Santa Barbara to Connecticut. There’s a club team offered to any UK student with lessons for only $35.

Western Equestrian Team This past March, the team traveled to New York to compete in the 2018 Western semifinals. Fun fact: the team is coached by AQHA Hall of Famer Bennie Sargent.

Ice Hockey Friday nights are more exciting with the UK Ice Hockey team. All home games are played at the Lexington Ice Center, better known as “The Barn”. Games begin at midnight and entry is $7.00.

Softball Club softball has been at University of Kentucky for six years. UK Club Softball has been in the National Club Softballl Association for 5 years & has won their conference every year since. The team has even been to the World Series, placed every year at regionals, and hosted their own tournament on campus.

Dance Ensemble The UK Dance Ensemble team gives students the opportunity to dance and create choreography. This is another completely student run organization that allows students to be creative and hone modern and ballet based techniques. There is a show at the end of every semester with 12-14 dances per show, which consist of a combination of student choreography and guest artists.

Rugby Men & Women There’s no such thing as varsity rugby so it’s a club here on campus. UK’s only Rugby team. Recently got a new pitch, which is a field. Fun facts: • Up until 2016, the women’s team never had a coach, so they coached themselves. • 3/4 of the girls who play on the girl’s team have never heard of rugby or played before. • Referees are called “sir” • Men’s team has 25 - 30 members. • Nutter Field House home games. • Undefeated regular season record and SEC champs this season.

Snowcats Every year, the UK Snowcats take 200+ students skiing. Other trips include white water rafting, skydiving, and riding somewhere out west for Spring Break. The club offers a discounted season pass to Perfect North that can only be purchased through UK Snowcats.

MEN’S BA

C U S T E E SW At the annual Big Blue Madness event in October 2017, Kentucky’s preseason-ranked No. 5 Men’s Basketball team introduced itself to their loyal fans and the nation. Reloaded with heralded recruits Kevin Knox, Nick Richards, P.J. Washington and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Wildcats looked to add another banner to the rafters of hallowed Rupp Arena. Accompanied by lesser known recruits Quade Green, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jemarl Baker, coupled with the return of Wenyen Gabriel and Sacha Killeya-Jones, this possibility seemed very real. The season to follow showed the youth and inexperience of the team, with many growing pains, but also the talent and potential they possessed. Through the very end, they were one of the most perplexing teams in the country. Injuries to Vanderbilt and Baker put Kentucky behind the eight ball before stepping on the court. Vanderbilt would return later in the season, but Baker would never see the floor. Beginning with two games in Lexington, the Wildcats picked up wins against Utah Valley 73-63 and Vermont 73-69. In their first contest outside the confines of Rupp, and first facing high-level competition, the No.7 Wildcats fell to No. 4 Kansas 65-61 in the State Farm Champions Classic. Kentucky rebounded nicely after the defeat, going on a seven-game win streak that culminated with a 93-86 victory over NCAA-Tournament team Virginia Tech. After beating the Hokies, Kentucky headed to New Orleans for a matchup with UCLA. Their third neutral-site game resulted in the second loss on the year as the Bruins pulled off an 83-75 win. Kentucky fell to No. 16 in the AP Top 25 as they prepared for a home date with Louisville. In arguably their most complete game of the season, the Wildcats showed their sky-high potential by dismantling the in-state rival Cardinals 90-61, led by Gilgeous-Alexander’s 24 points. Now ranked No. 17, Kentucky defeated Georgia and LSU to begin SEC play. The team would then lose three of five, including a home game to Florida with College Gameday in attendance. The stretch dropped the Wildcats from the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2014. One week later, Kentucky faced a raucous crowd at No.7 West Virginia in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Kevin Knox had 34 points, and the Cats stormed back from a large deficit to claim their first win over a ranked foe. The 83-76 victory clinched the SEC’s first triumph over the Big 12 in the challenge, and moved Kentucky back into the Top 25. The month to follow would be a roller coaster ride. A close call against Vanderbilt was accompanied by four straight losses – the longest losing streak of the Calipari era – and the team falling out of the Top 25 again. Kentucky stopped the bleeding with a home victory over Alabama, the first of four consecutive wins before losing to Florida

make ended in the win. The Round of 32 brought on the No. 13 seed Buffalo, from the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The 27-win Bulls knocked out Arizona by burying 15 treys in an 89-68 beatdown. Kentucky returned the favor, shooting nearly 57 percent from the field in a 95-75 victory. A Hamidou Diallo windmill dunk capped the night. The Cats would head down to Atlanta the next weekend, looking to make good on the Final Four expectations. The opening weekend took a large toll on the South region. Virginia, Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Arizona – the top four seeds – were all eliminated prior to the Sweet Sixteen, leaving the Cats as the best seed remaining in the South. Playing in “CATlanta”, analysts pegged them as a for-sure Final Four team. Coach Cal urged his players to “not drink the poison” the media provided as they prepared for No. 9 seed Kansas State.

for a second time to end the regular season. The No. 4 seed in the SEC Tournament, Kentucky’s season wasn’t as successful as many fans and analysts predicted. Despite that, they still managed to get a double-bye – something they have gotten every season since the 2012 expansion – and had time to change the narrative as the calendar flipped to March. In the SEC Quarterfinals, Kentucky played No. 12 seed Georgia, who was playing a third game in three days. Led by First Team AllSEC forward Yante Maten, the Bulldogs looked to continue their Cinderella run through the weekend. Kentucky was having none of it, as they led for the duration of the second half and won 62-49. The Wildcats suited up against No. 9 seed Alabama in the semifinals. After falling behind 10-8 in the opening minutes, they started raining down three-pointers and blew the contest wide open, capturing an easy 86-63 victory. Wenyen Gabriel led the charge for the Cats, going 7-7 from behind the arc. His performance made him the first UK player to hit seven three-pointers in an SEC Tournament game, and gave him the UK record for most three-point makes without a miss in a single game. All this momentum led to a showdown in the SEC Championship with No. 2 seed Tennessee. The Cats had fallen to the Vols twice in the regular season and were looking to avoid the three-game sweep. A tightly contested battle was sealed in the final seconds through clutch free throw shooting, and Kentucky claimed their 31st SEC Championship – and fourth straight – with a 77-72 win. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named Tournament MVP after dropping 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in the championship game. Later that day, Kentucky was announced as the No. 5 seed in the South Region for the NCAA Tournament. With No.1 Overall seed Virginia, No. 2 seed Cincinnati, and No. 4 seed Arizona all in the same region, the Wildcats weren’t a popular pick to reach the Sweet Sixteen, let alone the Final Four. Just as they had in the SEC Tournament, they set out to prove the doubters wrong, and meet the lofty expectations placed upon them back in November. This mission started with a matchup against the No. 12 seed Davidson Wildcats. Davidson entered the tournament having won 13 of their last 15 games, capturing the Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament Championship in the process. Kentucky got out to a 34-24 halftime lead, but the pesky squad hung around throughout the second half, tying the game numerous times. A 15-6 run by Kentucky in the dying minutes iced the game, and the 78-73 win kept the Wildcats undefeated in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64 under John Calipari. Kentucky’s streak of 1,047 straight games with a three-point

ONE BIG QUESTION REMAINS AM: REGARDING THIS KENTUCKY TE WAS THE SEASON A SUCCESS?

Ultimately Calipari’s words weren’t enough, as his Wildcats would succumb to the ones from K-State 61-58. A ninth title banner wouldn’t come this year, as Kentucky lost in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in seven trips under Calipari. It depends on how you look at it. At the beginning of the year, people expected the Wildcats in the Final Four. After the four-game losing streak, there were analysts questioning whether they would make the tournament. Then, once they reached the Sweet Sixteen, the media was all-in on them being a Final Four squad again. The situation has given fans plenty to debate as anticipation builds for next year. 26 Wins. A 29-point victory over their biggest rival. A fourthplace finish in the SEC, but their fourth straight SEC tournament title. This team practiced together, learned together and grew together. They were sometimes a pain to watch, and sometimes a joy to watch. Ultimately, they won a lot of games and maintained the established culture of Kentucky Basketball. As the NBA pipeline continues chugging along and Coach Cal re-tools for another run, there isn’t much more this team could have been asked for than that. Inside UK | 23

Welcome to Lexington, Kentucky: Your Big Small Town Written by Allie King

Lexington, Kentucky, contains the best of every world. We have small-town vibes despite the quite large size of the city. We have rural areas to contrast the hustle of our downtown area. Best of all, Lexington is a city that never stops giving. After living here for 19 years, I still happen upon new areas all the time. This town and surrounding areas are full of hidden treasures and the treasure hunt is never-ending.

NATURE HICKMAN CREEK If you love fishing or quiet time in nature, Hickman Creek is the place for you. This 25.5-milelong creek runs through Jessamine County, about 10 minutes from campus. This quiet location is great for small group activities: fishing, picnics or peaceful walks. VALLEY VIEW FERRY If you exit Kroger Field onto Tates Creek Rd and drive as far away from town as you can the road will turn into a single-lane country road. You will eventually reach Kentucky River where the road ends. The only passage over the river is Valley View Ferry. This ferry can take your car from one side of the river, to the other side and into Madison County. RED RIVER GORGE About an hour away from campus you will find a Kentucky State Park with 2300 acres of gorgeous hiking trails. You can rock climb, hike or enjoy a swim at Red River Gorge. At the top of one hike, there is a natural bridge formed out of rock that you can walk across for the ultimate view. SHOPPING WILD FIG BOOKS AND COFFEE Everyone loves a local bookstore, and why not find one where you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee while searching new reads? UNIQUE BOOKS Walking distance away from campus, you will find a local bookstore, Unique Books. This store

gives you small-town vibes while providing a large variety of books for your next read. DINING DOUBLE H BBQ Double H BBQ is a locally owned restaurant with top-notch southern comfort food. Located walking distance from campus and Rupp Arena, it is a great place for students to enjoy a variety of different homemade foods. Its menu ranges from chicken to ribs and every pulled meat in between. DETROIT FAMOUS CONEY ISLAND This is a local favorite just minutes from campus. This restaurant specializes in delicious hotdogs but completes their menu with hot fish sandwiches and Philly cheesesteaks. MIGUEL’S PIZZA When you visit Red River Gorge, this pizza restaurant is a must-try. This local cuisine and hiking shop serves custom pizzas made to your order. With a fun and inviting environment, Miguel’s is a perfect meal after a long hike. TACK HOUSE PUB A delicious and affordable restaurant is well worth a visit. This quaint restaurant specializes in breakfast, lunch and brunch. You must try their breakfast tacos and huge cinnamon roll! FOOD TRUCKS Without being specific, Lexington has many delicious food trucks. Ranging from BBQ to tacos, you are sure to find something appetizing for dinner at one our many trucks around town.
