Christian County Military Affairs Committee
FROM THE DESK OF MONA NAIR DIRECTOR OF MILITARY AFFAIRS Welcome to Christian County! We are thrilled that you are stationed here in the beautiful, basketball-loving, bourbon tasting, horse racing, bluegrass state of Kentucky. If you’ve recently PCS’d or even if you’ve been at Fort Campbell awhile, there’s a lot you probably don’t know about Christian County, KY. We are a tight knit community with NO state income tax for active duty military, a growing and diverse workforce, and so many great places to shop, eat and have fun with your family. We’ve been named a Great American Defense Community in large part due to our constant and enthusiastic support of military service members and families, but also for the outstanding events and military programs we put on each year. Some highlights include: • Christian County Salutes Fort Campbell Series: FREE fun throughout the late summer and fall for military families (Military Spouse Luncheon, Military Affairs Committee Gala, military Sunday series, discounts at local businesses) • Military Spouse Leadership Program: Network and connect with the local community and experience all that Christian County has to offer • Military Appreciation Weekend at Tie Breaker Family Aquatic Center There’s so much to do in Christian County, and we hope to share that here with you in our annual military affairs magazine. Just remember ... turn LEFT out the gate and head on over to Christian County! #OPERATIONLEFTTURN

GATEWAY ACADEMY Christian County Public Schools has kept its education programs moving forward with technology. In 2014, the district opened the Gateway Academy to Innovation and Technology focusing on engineering, health science, culinary works and industrial maintenance. One of the brightest stars of the academy is the VEX robotics team. In March, the robotics team won the state title, besting 54 other teams in the commonwealth. It was the first time in VEX Robotics history that teams from western Kentucky won the state tournament. As new graduation requirements from the Kentucky Department of Education have refocused students to begin career paths as early as the 10th grade, Gateway has helped CCPS pivot to dual-credit courses. In August, CCPS officially
opened the doors of Gateway’s Breathitt campus. Murray State University donated the building to CCPS. Through at $1.9 million grant from the Kentucky Work Ready Skills Initiative and $1.6 million in district funds, the district remodeled the building to be a state-of-the-art center for its health science courses. The new campus will allow CCPS to expand its allied health and biomedical classes and initiate EKG and pharmacy technician classes. Gateway is also expanding its computer science classes, welding, maintenance machinist and computerized manufacturing. As demand goes up for those jobs at local industries, Gateway allows CCPS to pivot to train the future workforce.
