Gather personal records from doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, schools, and religious institutions. Notify current utilities - gas, phone, electric, water, cable TV of disconnect dates and forwarding address. Contact new utilities with dates to commence service. Select a new bank, establish accounts and safe deposit box and apply for new bankcards. Obtain veterinary records and licenses, get new tags if needed and arrange for pets’ transportation. Arrange for help watching children on moving day. Cancel deliveries and services such as newspaper, trash collection, and lawn mowing as of moving day. Defrost freezer. Get rid of perishable food you won’t eat before moving. Obtain traveler’s checks for trip expenses and payment to movers. Make a first night box. Label it prominently and include towels, sheets, tissues, paper towels, plastic utensils, paper plates and cups, hammer, can opener, etc.

On Moving Day:

Carry enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in your new location. Carry jewelry and documents yourself. Before movers leave, check through the house, including the attic, to make sure nothing was missed. Stay overnight in a hotel or with friends or family. Leave next morning fresh for your new home. Let close friend or relative know your route and schedule you

will travel, including overnight stops. Use them as message headquarters. Leave all old keys needed by new tenant or owner with REALTOR® or neighbor.

At Your New Address:

Change the locks on your doors. You may or may not choose to do this, but most security experts advise it. Test security and smoke alarms. Childproof your new home. Obtain local emergency numbers and post them. Subscribe to the local paper to keep up on local events. Locate your Post Office. Ask for mail that they may be holding for your arrival. Locate police and fire stations as well as hospital and gas stations near your home. Scout your new neighborhood for shopping areas. Set up cable or satellite service. Find the right cellular phone service. Call the Department of Sanitation to find out which day the trash is collected. Change your driver’s license and automobile registration. Different rules apply in different states. Check your state’s requirements. Register to vote. Call your local board of elections for specific registration information. Ask them how to notify your previous voting district of your change of address. Enroll your children in school if you haven’t already done so. Be sure you have their medical records with you; most schools require immunization and physical records before they will accept a student. Provide your new doctors and dentist with your medical history. Transfer insurance policies to an agent in your new community. Seek out new service providers such as cleaners, veterinarian, etc. Call your new Chamber of Commerce for helpful information on cultural events, community activities and libraries and parks. Complete and changes of address you may have postponed. Get a local map and learn your way around. File your closing papers where you can get to them easily at tax time.
