Why Kenwood Cruise
Tailor-made
Antartica
Seasonal Guide
On this continent, the cruise season is relatively short, only running during the months of Antarctic summer. From October to March each year, the ice recedes enough that cruise ships can access this beautiful and remote wilderness.
October – November
Antarctica cruising begins in late October, just as the penguins are starting to return to the ice. This is the ideal time to see the continent in its most pristine state, with untouched ice and the first summer residents settling in. If your cruise visits South Georgia, you’ll have a chance to see the courting of elephant seals – rife with impressive conflicts between rival males. Here, and in the Falklands, the penguins are courting, and in the Weddell Sea you have the opportunity to visit secluded colonies of emperor penguins.
December – January
Considered by many as the best time to visit Antarctica, these months herald the longest days and the warmest temperatures. Wildlife is at its most active, with whales passing through on their long migrations, seabirds courting, and seal pups being born on the beaches of South Georgia. During these months, penguin chicks hatch, filling the breeding colonies with adorable fluffy babies.
February – March
By now, more of the sea ice has broken up, permitting access to Antarctica itineraries that aren’t available at any other point of the year. This is prime whale-watching season, with increased odds of spotting humpback and minke whales in the icy waters. You can get even closer to these majestic creatures on an included kayak or zodiac excursion. Adult penguins are very active, catching fish to feed their young, while the chicks are learning to swim, attracting leopard seals. With the sun low in the sky during March, it’s the perfect opportunity to capture photographs of the setting sun.
The Arctic
Seasonal Guide
Much like the Antarctic, the cruise season in the Arctic is limited by the sea ice, with ships only able to venture to many exciting sites in high summer. The Arctic cruising season runs from late April to September, with plenty to see in every month.
April – May
You’ll have a chance to see the last auroras before polar summer starts in earnest, lighting up the sky with incredible colours. This is a great time to spot polar bears in locations like Svalbard, as well as whales in the icy waters of many regions. Witness icebergs calving off from the glaciers in magnificent spectacles, depositing towering fresh icebergs into the sea.
June – July
These months mark the peak of the Arctic cruise season, with seabirds arriving and nesting on the cliffs, male polar bears competing for mates, and whales passing through krill-dense waters to feed. You may even spot the incredible narwhal, their amazing unicorn-like horns cutting through the ocean’s surface. In June, walruses gather in vast numbers along the beaches, with dominant males ruling over large harems and battling rivals for control. The sun remains high in the sky all day and night, never setting for a moment.
August – September
As the sea ice retreats to its greatest extent, this is the only time of year when regions like the Northwest Passage or Greenland’s Scoresby Sound can be visited. This part of the season still has plenty of polar bears, minke and humpback whales, and walruses to offer. If you’re lucky, you could even spot blue whales. The tundra transforms into a stunning display of red and gold autumn colours, and seabirds begin their migration away from the Arctic. Towards the end of the cruise season, the sun will finally start to fall, and the aurora will return to the skies.
South America
Seasonal Guide
With a rich history and some of the greatest biodiversity on the planet, South America holds boundless magnificence within its coasts and lands. Whether you want to unveil the colourful cultures of the region or the breadth of the rainforests, there’s a whole kaleidoscope of wonder to discover.
September – November
Cruising South America in the springtime will bring you to a world of sprawling wildflower meadows and calm, benevolent weather. This is the best time of year to spot baby animals along the coasts and rivers – ideal for animal-lovers. This is part of the dry season for much of South America, including the Amazon, so you will see less rain.
December – February
In the wet, warm weather of South American summer, the water level in the rivers is higher than ever, permitting inspiring explorations inland to the rainforests. In many cities, this is the time of year where festivals and celebrations come every week, providing fantastic chances for you to discover the vibrant cultures of the regions. This is also the only time of year to visit some parts of Patagonia, as the seas are at their calmest.
March – May
As the warmest part of the year for countries like Chile and Brazil, it’s the best beach-going weather you could ask for. It’s a fantastic time to tour South American cities, or to explore the wilderness as the spectacular autumnal colours of red, amber and gold wreath the forests, providing fantastic photo opportunities.
June – August
During the Amazon’s dry season, when the rivers are low, hiking through the rainforest on foot is easier than ever. If you’re excited for rainforest walks or safaris, these months offer you the best sights. It is also widely considered the best time of year to visit the renowned mountaintop ruins of Machu Picchu.
Galápagos Islands
Seasonal Guide
The volcanic archipelago of Galápagos is renowned as one of the most ecologically significant environments on the planet, with opportunities to see some of the Earth’s most unique and precious animals. Land, sea and sky all have incredible things to discover, all year round.
June – December
As the Humboldt Current brings in waters full of nutrients, this is the season where marine life is most abundant. Hiking on land will be more pleasant due to the lower temperatures and drier weather, and at sea you’ll have your best odds of spotting whales and dolphins. This is the season when giant tortoises and a variety of birds begin nesting, and many others search for mates.
January – May
This period is the most popular time to visit the Galápagos Islands, due to the warmer temperatures – explore the underwater world with snorkelling and diving, and discover even more animals active on land. Animals like albatross, marine iguanas, sea lions, giant tortoises, and a wide array of seabirds can be sighted on land, resting, feeding and breeding.
Alaska
Seasonal Guide
A vast landscape of dramatic scenery and spectacular Arctic wonders, Alaska is a fantastic choice for an expedition cruise. Like all Arctic regions, its sights vary greatly based on the time of year.
May – September
The summer months of May to August offer clement weather and extended daylight, perfect for exploring Alaska’s expansive landscapes and waters. Wildlife is most active during these long days, feeding and raising young while the sunlight lasts. In June, around the summer solstice, you’ll witness the Midnight Sun – or the stunning sunset at its end.
Europe
Seasonal Guide
With diverse and rich histories across the whole European region, there’s plenty to fill any expedition itinerary. Norway, Iceland, the Scottish islands and the Mediterranean are all excellent choices.
April – May
During the springtime of Europe, flowers bloom across the Nordic countries and the Mediterranean alike, creating gorgeous vernal vistas. It’s a great time to see baby animals in the wild, on both land and sea. If you’re in Norway when April comes around, you’ll have the chance to see the sun rise for the last time in months.
June – September
Summer in Europe marks the best time for hikes, tours, and nature walks of all kinds. The weather will be at its best, with warm temperatures and little rain. There’s no better season for roaming the gorgeous scenery – Norway’s fjords, Iceland’s waterfalls, the Scottish Islands’ dramatic coasts, and more. You’ll be able to hit the beach in the warmer Mediterranean countries, too.
Asia
Seasonal Guide
With regions like Bali’s Benoa, Sumbawa Island and Komodo Island to discover, there’s a great deal of beauty to see on your expedition cruise, from the inland wonders of the islands themselves to the bounty beneath the waves.
May – July
May to July is ideal for an expedition cruise in Southeast Asia. Calm seas and fewer tourists enhance the experience, with early monsoon rains creating lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife. It’s also prime for diving, offering excellent water visibility to explore the Coral Triangle and dive sites near Sumbawa and Komodo Island.
August – September November – April
The driest part of the season marks the best weather for hiking. Exploring mountains, discovering the beauty and wildlife of the islands, and taking walking tours of cities will be most comfortable here. Festivals such as Indonesian Independence Day in August make for exciting moments in your expedition.
During the wet season of Bali, temperatures are warmest, and the rainfall transforms the landscape into a lush and verdant paradise. In these months you’ll have the greatest experience of the local waterfalls, rice terraces and temples, with the greenery creating spectacular views.
The Kimberley, Australia
Seasonal Guide
An ancient wilderness whose unique and stunning landscapes comprise some of the most precious sights on Earth, the Kimberley Coast is a fantastic choice for your expedition cruise.
May – June
The start of the dry season, this is the best time to see famous waterfalls like Mitchell Falls and Horizontal Falls. Due to the comfortable temperatures and dry weather, you’ll enjoy walking and hiking to see the sights on-shore.
July – October November – April
In the summer months, you’ll have the greatest odds of spotting humpback whales off the coast. October marks the end of the dry season, and you’ll enjoy the best visibility for diving and snorkelling.
The Kimberley Coast’s wet season reigns here, with dramatic sunsets, awe-inspiring lightning displays, and plenty of active wildlife. The rains replenish the waters and waterfalls, making it an ideal time to visit them.
Expedition vs Standard Ocean Cruising
Destination Dedication
While a standard cruise ship has an increased focus on your onboard experience, an expedition ship is all about the destination. You can expect your expedition vessel to be much smaller than many of the luxury cruise liners, with every detail designed for dedicated, unforgettable explorations. The largest expedition vessels have a passenger capacity of only 500, with 200 to 300 being more standard; these smaller ships can venture where larger ships can not, and avoid damaging the delicate ecosystems they visit.
Fully Equipped for Adventure
Expedition ships come prepared for exploration, with complements of Zodiac boats and kayaks to allow you to get up close and personal with your chosen destination. There are plenty of secluded coves and narrow waterways that even an expedition ship could never get close to, and that’s why smaller boats are so important. Some expedition ships may even come equipped with exciting vehicles like submarines and helicopters for an especially inspiring look at the local landscapes. You can also expect to find science centres on some ships, particularly when your expedition focuses on ecologically significant regions like Antarctica or the Galápagos Islands.
Action-Packed Days and Early Nights
On an expedition vessel, you needn’t expect all-night partying or black-tie events. It’s all about the sights, which means your days will be filled with adventure. Whether on land, aboard Zodiacs or kayaks, or exploring beneath the waves, most of your activities will take place off the ship. Onboard entertainment revolves around lectures and film screenings, designed to captivate you with insights into local sites, history, and ecology. These programs tend to end early, allowing you to get plenty of rest for the incredible days that lie ahead.
Celebrity Cruises
You’ll always remember the islands that time forgot. In the Galápagos, modern explorers come eye to eye with ancient tortoises, comical birds, and other amazing beasts — plus landscapes as fantastical as the animals — for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Award-winning Tours
After 17 years of award-winning Galápagos cruise holidays, Celebrity can open your world even wider with All Inclusive packages of 10–16 nights in South America. Explore lofty Quito, capital of Ecuador; mystical Machu Picchu, high in the Andes Mountains; historic Lima, seaside capital of Peru; and charming Cuzco, ancient city of the Inca — complete with air transfers, five-star accommodation and tours.
