Incredibly Incredible! BY MAUREEN KASUKU This June 15, a family favourite animation is making its way back in theatres – Incredibles 2 (yay!). 14 years ago, we were introduced to a family of suburban superheroes led by Mr. Incredible who has superstrength and his sidekick wife Helen Parr aka Mrs. Incredible/Elastigirl who has elastic and invisibility abilities. This time, Helen takes center stage as both the leader of the family and the movie’s plot. This is why you should be excited: It has everything we love about the superhero genre: Gripping action sequences, compelling character development, crazy technological advancements… The whole shebang! The film looks like it will focus a lot on the kids- Violet and Dash- who are discovering and learning to control their powers and the baby whose powers are totally out of control. Also, the movie brings Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl out of retirement and learning to embrace every aspect of who they are. Girl power! Elastigirl shows young girls that girls are strong and don’t need the

help of boys, which is always an important lesson for a kids’ movie. The villain is a relatable baddie: After watching the way that Buddy Pine’s whole world falls apart when Mr. Incredible refuses to let him fight crime, it’s easy for the audience to understand what drives Buddy and why he’s turned to a life of villainy. Responsibility: Lots of Superhero films have no reservations about destroying whole cities in the name of justice, without so much as a casual mention about the damaged property or the massive cleanup that results. The Incredibles, on the other hand, makes this idea a

central premise of the film, and the heroes are forced to hang up their tights after the lawsuits against them start piling up. BY TIM MWORIA This June, 25 years to the day since Steven Spielberg’s eye-popping Jurassic Park first screened, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will hit Nairobi cinemas. This is the muchanticipated sequel to 2015’s hugely popular Jurassic World, which itself was a continuation of the 1993 original. Fallen Kingdom transports us back to the ruins of Jurassic island which is now in the thick of anarchy from the previous movie’s events. This time, our two returning heroes, Chris

Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, are saving the dinos from a smuggling network that is minting money from selling the creatures on the black market. But, not only do they have to deal with a dangerous criminal cabal, a dormant volcano is roaring to life and lava begins to rain down on the island. Wowzer! Exciting news for the fans of the original Jurassic Park is that Jeff Goldblum will reprise his iconic role as chaos theory expert Dr Ian Malcolm. Let’s face it though, Jurassic fans are mostly in it for the

dinosaurs, not the human cast. And Fallen Kingdom will deliver on fans’ expectations by promising to have more dinosaurs than any previous Jurassic movie. If gigantic dinosaurs, an underworld conspiracy and hot steaming lava don’t make for the perfect soda-popping, popcorn-crunching movie experience, then I don’t know what does.
