IN ANT-ICIPATION:

ANT-MAN & THE WASP

Meet Queen Arrow

BY MAUREEN KASUKU

T

his July, Ant-Man and the Wasp will finally land in cinemas. It’s been a little while since we last saw our favourite teeny-tiny hero, and we’re super excited to reunite with him. This time around, he brings with him Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), a buzzing sidekick who is sure to make this sequel twice as fun as its 2015 original. Comedian Michael Peña and rapper T.I. are also back to provide us with more classic Marvel zingers, as they reprise their roles in Ant-Man’s ragtag crew of misfits. So, why should you ant-icipate this one? Well, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently teased that it would be an important building block to the next Avengers movie which comes out in 2019. Rumors swirl that time travel will figure into Avengers 4, and this movie might just set up the likely scenario that the Avengers travel back in time to undo Thanos’ deadly snap of his finger. From what we’ve seen on the trailers, and early reviews, it seems like this movie is going to be extra lit. Word is that the movie also features incredible post-credit scenes – we can’t wait! Get your tickets from www.kenyabuzz.com/ movies

BY JACQUELINE KENDI

Marvel’s mega-hit movie Black Panther introduced the world to a different kind of Africa – technologically advanced, rich and prosperous. This positive reimagining of Africa has helped raise a global appetite for African comic books. In March, The Economist reported that the demand for African comics spiked after the release of the movie. The continent has a wealth of comic books which explore African mythology, history and culture. Here are the top five that might just become the next Black Panther.

KWEZI BY LOYISO MKIZE – SOUTH AFRICA Kwezi, is about a young 19-year-old South African boy who discovers that he has superpowers and embarks on a journey to discover himself and fulfil his purpose. It reminds me of Kenya’s Shore Wanda written by Moving Were which has a similar plot. Loyiso Mkize the comic’s creator has designed the character of Kwezi superbly, and he’s big screen ready in every way. Kwezi which means ‘Star’ in Xhosa and Zulu will for sure make an impact as the African Star.

SHADOW WALKERS BY MUTENDEI WRITES – KENYA The premise is that life and gods began in Africa and spread outwards to other parts of the globe. The Shadow Walkers (African) gods influenced life directly and indirectly. Being overtaken by modernity, the gods exist in secret fighting a secret war. This comic tackles a very thought-provoking topic and is told well enough not to bore. The costumes are just beyond imagination, and I would definitely want to watch African gods fight evil.

UMZINGELI: THE AFRICAN BOUNTY HUNTRESS BY EUGENE RAMIREZ MAPONDERA – ZIMBAMBWE This Chocolate heroine showcases a bounty huntress who goes after political criminals. The strength and intelligence featured through the character is extraordinary and as a woman, I found it empowering. Yay, feminism!

THE TRUE ANANSE BY LETI ARTS – GHANA

Leti Arts is taking great strides in the mainstream media making them one of Africa’s true trans media companies. Their comic True Ananse is based on a legend from Ghana Kweku Ananse. Leti Arts reimagines the story of Kweku Ananse, the trickster, and depicts him as a god turned superhero in modern Africa.

E.X.O.: THE LEGEND OF WALE WILLIAMS BY ROYE OKUPE – NIGERIA Roye Okupe made Nigeria explode when he created his first comic EXO. The first chapter featuring this Iron Man-esque powersuited hero, set in a near-future Lagos of 2025. The character finds a suit left by his father and the minute he puts it on his mission begins.

osplay is short for costume play. Cosplay is dressing up as a superhero or a character from a video game, comic book, or movie and channeling their essence. Getting in character Cosplay is more than just dress-up. For dedicated cosplayers, they use it as a social outlet and an art form. It’s a means of elaborate pleasure and self-expression. When a cosplayer selects a particular costume, they are often tapping into a specific character — or combination of characters — because something about that role speaks to them personally. Outside of Kenya, in places such as Japan and San Francisco, cosplaying has gained such popularity that people do it for a living. They participate in extravagant cosplay conventions where there’s usually a costume competition and reward of some sort.

model their costumes in front of an audience and a panel of judges, in hopes of winning cash prizes worth millions of shillings, a role in a major motion picture or in some cases, paid work on a film set. At the biggest cosplay gathering in the world, the San Diego Comic Con, the annual cosplay contest is called the Masquerade and recognises cosplayers in categories like Best in Show, Best Original Design, Best Workmanship, and Best Young Fan. Nairobi’s most dedicated cosplayers look forward to Nairobi Comic Convention (NAICCON) which started four years ago as the city’s first ever comics and cosplay convention. It has since become an annual event that brings together homegrown cosplay enthusiasts. Why they do it? Here, some of Nairobi’s cosplayers tell us why they are part of this burgeoning global sub-culture.

Cosplayers who enter the competitions

Jessica as Shuri (Marvel Comics) JESSICA “I think most people start cosplaying out of love for a character/game/series/anime. It’s the same for me. I keep doing it because it’s been such a great experience, getting into character & seeing people’s reactions when they see me dressed up as someone they also love. My first cosplay was in 2014. Guys were planning a steampunk photoshoot & I decided it would be fun to put together a costume & join them. I make my costumes from scratch, & also sell costumes to other cosplayers. I think my best ever costume was Shuri Black Panther.”

CHERYL “For me, Cosplay is more than just dressing up as your favorite character. You embody their spirit. You become them. Ever since I was a kid, I always wondered what it was like being like a certain character. Cosplay allows me to get into character. I also get to create as an artist. Cosplay is a treasure chest I never knew existed. I got started in 2016. Most times I make my own costumes. I get my apparel from anywhere. Gikomba, high end stalls…the works. But If I need something really Cheryl as elaborate I commisSatsuki sion cosplay costume Kiryuin shop KiraKira to get (Kill la Kill me bodied. My best anime) costume would have to be Satsuki Pic: Movie Kiryuin from the Jabber anime Kill a Kill.”

Behind the Costumes Why Do Cosplayers Cosplay? EFFIE “Cosplay is my way of expressing my love for a particular fandom. Really getting into character. What I enjoy most about cosplay is the satisfaction of creating my costume from scratch and the compliments that follow. It’s a craft. I make my costumes and props from scratch or I do ‘wardrobe raids’ to see what old items of clothing can be repurposed. Many costumes are way too flamboyant to be found in Nairobi stores. Ordering online is a hustle. Occasionally, I commission items from KiraKira. It’s really hard deciding my favorite costume because I love them for different reasons. I’ll settle for Harley from Suicide Squad. It was the first costume I had ever made.”

Effie as Harley Quinn

Mutendei as Hannibal Barca of Carthage

Asgar as Shaggy (Scooby-Doo) ASGAR “I’ve always been a geek. I love cartoons and comic books. Cosplaying lets me embrace the essence of a character as part of me. I make my own costumes. I’m really creative. I work with anything around me to pull off the perfect costume. One of my most popular costumes was Shaggy from Scooby Doo. It was really fun.”

MUTENDEI “For me, Cosplay is a means of bringing my favorite characters to life. My costumes are made from scratch by Tidy Designs. One of my best costumes so far was the first version of Hannibal Barca I did.”

#AskACeleb: What’s Your

Favourite Video Game of All Time? BY ANTHONY MBUGUA MBITHI MASYA Filmmaker – Kati Kati My fave is The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild. Few video games have ever made me feel the way this game has. Every minute of my 75+hours playing it were filled with pure joy! ANNE MWAURAH Radio Host I have two favourite video games; Sims, which I’ve been playing since I was 14. It allows you to create homes, lives and multi-cultural characters. It also allows you to learn how to budget your money, structure healthy relationships and create different careers. I also love GTA (Grand Theft Auto) because it allows me to let off some steam.

DJ KACE Radio DJ My favourite video game franchise of all time would have to be Halo. I specifically like Halo Reach because I played it a lot and actually got quite good with it online. After that it’s probably Mario Kart and FIFA because of the nostalgia and multiplayer aspect. LIKARION WAINAINA Filmmaker – Supa Modo My favourite game would have to be L.A. Noire (2011). It’s extremely cinematic and being a filmmaker, I can appreciate that. It has interesting characters, amazing storytelling and very engaging. It’s like starring in a film that you’re also directing. I love it. Sadly, it has no sequel.

CIKU SHIRE TV Presenter- Lit 360 It would have to be GTA San Andreas. For some reason that’s been the only game that’s been able to keep me hooked on to the screen like a mad woman (Laughs).

LEVIS RYAN YouTuber My favourite game is the Resident Evil Franchise. I love it because I’m obsessed with horror and these kinds of games just get your blood going, especially when you play them at night.

.com DJ PROTÉGÉ Radio DJ My favourite game has to be Call of Duty. I’m more of an action adventure kind of gamer. I love the challenges and conquests and can play all day and night because it’s so immersive. So much that my girl often threatens to burn my PlayStation because she is competing for attention (Laughs). BARAK JACUZZI Trap Artist/Rapper My 3 favourite games would have to be; Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto and NBA 2K18. Mortal Kombat is a classic and my name was on the game so that was also lit. GTA is also another classic where you can be a terrible person and jack an old lady for her car ride like skrrr, skrrr. As for NBA, I just think all men should play it. DJ N’RUFF Music DJ My favourite video game is FIFA. I’ve always been a football fanatic and I just love how it has evolved over the years. The online mode where you can play with friends anywhere in the world makes it more awesome.
