Hallelujah

Willy Paul Ft Nandy In spite of a few PR missteps, Willy Paul is arguably one of Kenya’s top performing artists. He has transitioned from the gospel industry to secular music, but has still been able to maintain his massive fan following. The Hallelujah video, featuring Tanzania’s songstress Nandy caused quite a frenzy on social media, receiving mixed reactions from the public in relation to Pozee’s faith. The jury is still out on whether or not we should categorize this song as gospel or secular. However, the song produced in March has since received 7.4 million views by the time this article was written.

tionable and controversy seemed at home with it, but this song made a mark as one of 2019’s undeniable street anthems. The song trended on social media with the wamlambez challenge giving it even more traction. The most famous recorded wamlambez challenge took place at a Chicken Inn outlet, followed by another viral video featuring mourners at a funeral dancing and twerking to the song. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua

banned the song from being played outside clubs, claiming the song promotes pornography. Since its release in April, the song has gained 4.4 million views on YouTube.

their hit song Lamba Lolo in 2018. Their fan base goes across the board -from Millennials to Generation Z. There has also been quite the uproar and debate regarding the group’s style of music. Their song Figa would have been another top contender had it not been pulled down for a YouTube violation, following an embarrassing rip off of another song titled ‘Cono’. Pandana however, had received 3.7 Million Views on YouTube by the time this article was written.

Sol Generation Sometimes the best work comes from a team effort, as seen from Sol Generation’s first song, Extravaganza. There is no doubt the award-winning band Sauti Sol has been among Kenya’s most beloved artiste list since back in the day. They have had many hit singles and collaborated with a number of international and local acts including Patoranking, Khaligraph Jones and Nyashinski. Sol Generation

Collabo This has been the biggest collabo of 2019, and it is brimming with the baddest of bad artistes in the music industry. The song features chart-topping come-back artiste Nyashinski, the King of Genge Juakali, rapper Khaligraph Jones, new artist Naiboi and the lyrical Fena Gitu. This was more than a song; it was the start of a campaign against HIV/AIDS that advocated for people to use self-test kits. This message was however not very clear in the video, but it still made for great visuals, with media and entertainment personalities such as Talia Oyando and DJ Shiti making appearances. The star-studded collabo has bagged 2.5 million views since the release in March. Regardless of the morality question that dogs most club bangers, the content remains highly consumed. No doubt the Gengetone style might one day go down as part of Kenyan music history. For now, let’s let the kids have a little fun.

Tis the Szn: A Journey Through MAUREEN KASUKU

E

very now and then we get to encounter an artist with a universal appeal. Vallerie Muthoni is that artist. Her R&B, funkinfluenced hip hop has endeared her to many music connoisseurs in the country. The Femcee extraordinaire has released two EPs in rapid succession. It’s been just over a year since her first EP Wavey Soul debuted and catapulted to her to the top of Kenyan Hip-Hop charts and in March, she dropped her sophomore musical project: Pisces Szn; which carries her biggest single so far- Spicy Szn. And boy, it’s been a spicy year for Vallerie. She lets us in on her meteoric rise to fame, her incredible year and why we aren’t yet ready for her industry takeover! KB: Rapper, singer, song-writer, poet… all-round badass Femcee. You’re quite the multifaceted artist. So which one were you first and how did you evolve to becoming the ‘mistress’ of musical trades you are today? VM: I have always wanted to be an entertainer from my childhood -hosting mini concerts in our living room with outfit changes, dance choreographies and having my mum video tape the whole thing! As I grew older, I continued writing songs and singing every chance I could get. In high school I really got into poetry/ spoken word as a form of expression. That skill morphed into rap and now I’m able to dabble in various forms of performance arts to create the artist that is Vallerie Muthoni. KB: Your first EP, Wavey soul can be described as a body of work that explores themes of love, selfexploration, mental health and the realities of a young female millennial. We’ve listened to your sophomore project Pisces Szn and we’ve got to say, it has a kick to it. It’s… less mellow and has a more ‘assertive sound’ to it. Would you agree? How would you describe Pisces Szn? Spill everything sis! VM: Ha-ha I like that. Well, The Wavey Soul was the world’s introduction to me, a peak into my soul per-se. I wanted to capture the (very) diverse parts of me, that’s why it covers so many different genres and topics. I also wanted to show my versatility and that’s why I sang, rapped and did a little spoken word throughout the project.

Pisces SZN was a fun little project I released to celebrate my 18th birthday. I wanted to have fun on this EP and so I decided to have 3 tracks with 3 different genres, that way there was something everyone could vibe to. KB: (Your alter ego) Brown Suga really came out in Pisces Szn huh? VM: She did the dxmn thang and did it well! KB: Let our readers in on Brown Suga. VM: Well, Brown Suga is similar to what Sasha Fierce was to Beyoncé and Roman to Nicki Minaj. Brown Suga is my sexy, very confident, no- BS-taking boss side. She says the things normal Vallerie is usually too reserved to say and is very unapologetic about who she is. And she’s very aware of the power she holds. Brown Suga comes out to play when I’m putting down lyrics and mostly during performances. She brings out the best of me! KB: Why did you release two EPs in less than a year? Why not a full album? VM: Pisces SZN was very impromptu and last minute. One of those “why not?” projects. I never imagined I’d release two EPs in less than a year. As an artist who digests and takes albums very seriously, I’m very particular about making mine. To me, making an album is something I want to do when I am: Financially ready (yeah, those things cost A LOT, especially for an independent artist) When I’m emotionally ready. I want to be able to conceptualize my album and take time with it to

ensure it’s the best representation of where I am as an artist. KB: Your music is a fusion of different sounds that blend into the unique flavor of Hip Hop you served us with your two EPS. Tell us about your songwriting process. What’s the secret sauce Val? VM: My songwriting process is pretty easy. I’ll listen to a beat and can usually tell if I like it within the first 30 seconds. If I do,

I basically freestyle on what vibe the song is giving me and record it on my phone. From there, I listen back to it and catch some words/ melodies which I write and build on. As for the sauce, thatA comes naturally! KB: Whoa! That’s something! You put in the work. Your rise to fame in an incredibly short time may seem like a breeze but you’ve been preparing for this as a budding artist in Southbend Indiana. Did the State influence your music? VM: Um…I left Indiana and moved back to Kenya when I was 6 so I was still pretty young, but my roots in the US definitely inspire my musical taste. My mum would have a mix of Destiny’s Child CDs and Kikuyu tapes in the car. And even when I

moved back here, I was still listening to a lot of RnB, Pop and hip-hop from the states. So yes, there’s definitely some significant influence from the US (aren’t we all though?) KB: Would you say your music career would have taken a completely different trajectory if you were still based in the States? VM: Oh, for sure! I don’t even know if I’d be as ‘popular’ or as ‘well known’ as I am here in Kenya. In the states, the talent pool is enormous and chances of being a well-known artist amongst millions of talented humans is so slim. Here in Nairobi, the music industry is very small, everybody knows everybody-a lot of the times on a personal level- and this is what I believe helped me grow. Having my peers support to

advise and even promote me has hugely helped me get to where I am today. I wouldn’t have it any either way and I’ll continue working hard here in Kenya until I can tour the world as a renowned Kenyan artist. KB: You got featured on Colors Studio. What was that like? VM: So surreal. it was one of my first huge achievements. Wild to think that there are people out in the world listening to me. KB: Aye! Spicy Szn is a bop! The video is quite the vision, the lyrics witty. It’s such a feel-good song. Has this been a spicy year for you? Has 2019 been a fun ride thus far? VM: Eyyyy! Asante sana. I love that song, ha-ha.

Yes! This has been a great year. From the release of the EP in March, things have just been happening and happening and blessings are falling onto my lap. It’s crazy! All the hard work has been reaping fruit for sure. I’ve experienced and lived my BEST LIFE in 2019! Spicy SZN has turned into a lifestyle. Definitely one of the best years in my career so far. KB: We spotted Miss Karun in the video. Should we expect a collaboration soon? Seeing how The overarching theme in your hit songs is self-confidence? VM: Yes, definitely. But I won’t say too much for now, keep a look out for the rest of 2019 *wink wink* KB: Who else would you love to work with in the industry?

VM: Locally? Fena, Octopizzo, MDQ and Blinky Bill. Internationally? Burna Boy, Nasty C, Anderson Paak, H.E.R, Masego & Frank Ocean KB: So, what should we expect from Brown Suga in the coming years? Are we even ready? VM: That’s a bit of a hard question since I know I’m capable of so much (more) and I’m interested in doing so many different things that I JUST KNOW I’ll end up being in surprising ventures -even for me. But let me say what I want for sure: a world tour, international collaborations, a major brand deal, a radio/TV show, my own production company and of course more fire music and mindblowing visuals!

PLAY TO BE PAID! A Brief Guide On The Business of Music BY MAJESSTY Music: whether you write it, record it, sing it, play it, sell it, or remix it, it’s imperative that you understand where you stand when you work with others, and how to properly protect your work. Trust me, ignorance on this topic is not bliss. Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Registered under the Companies Act (Cap 486 of the laws of Kenya), MCSK is a non-profit making collecting management organization for authors, composers and publishers of musical works. Its main obligation is to collect and distribute royalties for public performances and broadcasting on behalf of its members. Unfortunately, despite all the recent drama surrounding the MCSK, if you make music in Kenya, you need to register. Period. Author, composer and arranger requirements are listed on the MCSK website in great detail. Royalties Explained Simply put, artistes get paid royalties based on record sales. In a typical

major-label deal, the artiste can earn somewhere between 14 - 18 percent of the record’s dealer price. (PPD) But get this, before they see any money, the artist will have to recoup the recording costs, advances, and sometimes up to 50 percent of all video costs! Also, the label will probably make additional deductions, reducing the real royalty rate further. It’s rough outchea! Record Deals/ Labels A recording contract might seem like the holy grail, (okay yes, a label deal can change your life) but record labels are NOT charities; they are first and foremost, business entities. You need to remember contracts are legally binding agreements which can allow record companies to exploit an artiste’s performance on a sound recording, in return for royalty payments. This is achieved through physical sales, such as CD, vinyl’s and cassettes; public performances and broadcasting of works; and the sale of digital products such as downloads and mobile ringtones like those “Skiza” tunes you always hear (yes someone just made money from that weird dial tone). The contract will often define a record to

include audio-visual devices as well. So just know, any new technologies will be swept up into this definition. Record labels invest huge sums of money in breaking an act and claim that they need this level of control in order to improve the chances of making a profit or, which is often the case, cut their losses. Some DJs and producers actually sign deals under specific aliases, leaving them free to contract with other labels under a different pseudonym. Hint Hint. Copyright Basically put, copyright is a law that gives the owner of a work (like a book, movie, picture, song or website) the right to say how other people can use it. Copyright laws make it easier for authors to make money by selling their works. If someone copies a work without permission, the owner can say they trespassed their copyright. It all seems simple, but there have been countless lawsuits over who actually “owns” a song. Anyone who owns a copyright, or part of a copyright, holds the right to:

Make copies of the work, create new works based on the original copyright, distribute copies of the work, perform the work publicly, and display the work publicly. The copyright owner(s) make money by granting these rights to others. Masters A master is the final product. The owner of the master (either an independent artiste or the record Label) should be the person who pays for the project. The producer, in most cases, does not own the master recording. Like with signed artists, the producer can, and often should, be given “points” (like shares) on the album. Whoever wrote the song owns the composition. At least, that is the case for most music. There are a few exceptions (works made for hire, superstar artists negotiating a share of their songs) but for the most part, if you wrote it, you own a part of it; if you didn’t, there’s a chance you can get nothing.

Licensing Licensing refers to the act of getting the rights to use the music. Almost every single movie and television show has a soundtrack or a background song. If your song is featured in a film, commercial, radio or TV show, you are eligible for a licensing fee. Musicians will often contract themselves out to create soundscapes for movies and television. Some artists even offer their music licensing rights to production companies for a set fee. Of course, these fees vary greatly, depending on the budget for the project, and how badly they want your particular song. BTW another black panther movie will be coming soon, so get writing! Now that you’re a little more enlightened about forms of compensation, artistes, don’t underpay your producers. Producers, don’t overcharge the artist. Everyone, pay your musicians. If we want the world to support Kenyan music, Kenyan music must first learn to support itself. #Pay/PlayKEMusic!

BEHIND THE LENS

Spotlight on Videographers BY JACQUELINE KENDI

E

ver wonder who are the creative geniuses behind your favorite YouTube hits? Videographers are the silent creatives working behind the scenes to turn musician’s concepts into complete visual experiences; including the entire pre and post-production process. This art has brought creativity in the music scene to a whole new level. Kenyan videographers have been making waves with amazing ingenious works. Four of the best Kenyan video producers have not only worked with Kenyan artists but also crossed continents. Let’s take a look at them:

Thomas Mboss

He is one of the pioneers in the scene. He began his career as part of the music group Boomba Clan. They were so disappointed in the quality of the video for their song that Mboss decided to shoot it himself. The result was the video for Do Not Touch My Car, and later, Chonga Viazi, which won the best video award at Chaguo La Teeniz 2006. Apart from his own music, he has directed a considerable list of celebrity names including: Jaguar ft Iyanya, One Centimetre Remix; Rabbit, Kichinjo; Nazizi ft Ginjah (from Jamaica), Brother Sister, Wyre ft Cecil, She Said Dat Remix; Cannibal, Leg-

end; Jay A ft. Amani, On Me; Wyre ft. Jua Cali, Khadija. His ability to infuse humor in his videos has earned him a reputation as one of the most fun and engaging videographers. He has branched into TV and advertising, with his most notable mainstream media work being part of the team that produced the Tusker Project Fame season 6 auditions.

J Blessing Jibril, also known as J Blessing, has truly mastered the art of video directing. He is continuously working on local hits like Sage’s So Alive ft. Octopizzo; P-Unit ft Alicious’ Mobimba; and Kristoff ft Frasha & King kaka’s Dandia. Apart from being a top videographer he is also the CEO

Enos Olik

Young Wallace

Enos Olik started out as a photographer. He is one of the most sought-after creative directors in Kenya today. He made a name for himself when he directed his first song Ni Msoh written by Kelele Takatifu and Holy Dave. He has worked with top notch artists like Sauti Sol for their songs, Nishike, Sura Yako, Still the One and Nerea; Jaguar’s Kioo; Octopizzo’s Ivo; Elani’s Milele, Ali Kiba’s Nagharamia; Vanessa Mdee’s Come Over; P-Unit’s Weka Weka; Eddy Kenzo’s Maria Roza and Nameless’ Letigo. These songs were big hits on the African continent and completely redefined the videography game. His fusion of African and international influences, clear visuals and a love for color sets him apart.

His journey begun at Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology (JKUAT) as an actuarial science student. He fell in love with music and began rapping and writing his own music. Lacking the financial ability to pay for videography, he got a job in a cybercafé and spent his time teaching himself how to edit videos. He saved up KES 5,000 and shot and edited his initial videos on his own. He finally got his big break when J Blessing spotted his talent and hired him. He mostly works with gospel artists but has done some secular work. He has worked on; Barua by Bahati; Tam by Willy Paul and Size 8; Dawa ya Moto by Grandpa Government;

of Link Video Global. He shares his knowledge through mentorships for young budding video directors like Young Wallace. His passion is to see growth in his mentees. He also works in TV- he produced the second season of NTV’s Churchill show. J Blessing has really branded himself and is definitely one of the best. Wafula by Alaine and Churchill; Nabeba Mawe by Eric Omondi; Take it Slow by Willy Paul and Sauti Sol; Kingston Girl by and No More by Wyre; Kamua Leo by Kidis, DNA, Wyre and Ameleena; Story Yangu by Bahati and Dennoh and Sijafika by Willy Paul, Gloria Muliro, Kambua and Size 8. His songs communicate his story telling prowess and ability to interpret artiste’s songs quite well. Although these videographers face immeasurable challenges from production to government support, they have managed to create some great visual memories and will no doubt continue growing to make even bigger impacts in the music industry.

Our Fave Female Musicians Dominating the Industry BY MAUREEN KASUKU

F

rom Steam by Fena Gitu to Spicy Szn by Vallerie Muthoni, 2019 has gifted us some catchy bops by female artists dominating the music industry. The over-arching theme each artist has touched in one form or the other seems to be self-expression. It’s fascinating to witness the shift artists are portraying in their sounds, slowly taking the industry by storm with positive messaging such as self-acceptance and women’s empowerment. We’ve watched as these amazing women made boss moves and amplified their voices on Kenyan airwaves. In so doing, they have carved a niche in an industry that that can be, well, a little tough for women to say the least. Let’s turn the spotlight on some of our fave music divas this year:

FENA GITU Fenamenal It all started 11 years ago when Fena won a singing completion on “Fete de la Musique” at

Alliance Française, marking the beginning of an illustrious music career. From a back-up vocalist for Muthoni the Drummer Queen, Fena has earned her stripes and cemented her position as one of the most ‘fenamenal’ femcees in Kenya. We love her 2019 hit Steam; a mid-tempo dancehall fusion track infused with her unique style consisting of witty wordplay and memorable lyrics. A testament to the effortless fusion of genres and lyrical wit that created the signature sound she describes as ‘Urban Soul.’

Nadia Mukami. She performed at Coke studio, usually a seasoned musician’s platform, and also parted ways with the management team that propelled her to stardom. Sideshows aside, Nadia has been enjoying mainstream media love with her hit titled Radio Love. She demonstrates fluent Kiswahili lyricism in Lola and Ikamate Hiyo- an afro-pop song that sees her transition from a nice pop girl to a sultry artist. All these feats are a testament to Nadia’s versatility. Ikamate hiyo takes us on a journey that explores the intimate sensual engagement of two lovers in a metaphorical way. Some great baby making music right there. Can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us.

MISS KARUN The Party Don’t Stop Mayonde Afro centric indie soul singer has since morphed into the musical powerhouse we love today. Our Kenyan belle is now all ‘grown-up’ and this year, she’s serving us sultry sounds with songs like Shika and the club banger Chini kwa Chini. Back in 2017, she sang to us the fun lyrics detailing how she “kills it, kama kawaida” (as usual). And true to her words, Mayonde has shown us nothing but consistent excellence as she continues to release more hit singles from her EP Project Purple.

TRINA MUNGAI Reluctant star all grown up Trina, if you’re reading this, remember that time almost a decade ago when you were just 15 and seemingly disinterested in any kind of fame, and you just tagged along with a friend to my high school magazine interview? Look at you now, thriving in the industry. And me, writing about it! Folks bumping to Shika, her

Trina collaboration with Mayonde and marveling at how much she’s grown since her debut single ‘Tonight’, have no idea. She’s anything but an ‘overnight success’ She’s been a consistent work in progress, and from the brilliant artistry she has demonstrated so far with Shika and Twenty-four, it’s only up from here.

PHY’S PHYLOSOPHY Get em Girl You’ve got to admire Phy’s tenacity. Her ‘Phylosophy’ seems to be: you want it, go for it! Small town girl moves to the big city and enrolls for music

Karun for 2 years! Phy isn’t dropping singles all over the place. She’s more of a quality than quantity kind of artist. It’s been 10 months since she teased us with the masterpiece Power from her upcoming album Phyture. We haven’t heard much from her since then but we are sure she’s working on something dope.

NADIA MUKAMI Radio Loves Her 2019 has been a rollercoaster year for budding songstress

Almost a decade ago, Karun broke into the music industry as a member of the popular alternative hip-hop group Camp Mulla. Their biggest debut hit Party don’t stop catapulted the group to Superstardom. But along the way, the party did stop for Camp Mulla. Not so for Karun. She became a solo artist, steadily sharing her artistry with us- releasing two albums whilst balancing the new responsibilities of motherhood. Why do we love her latest single from her upcoming EP? It’s because Glow Up speaks about self-love and believing in yourself. And Karun has demonstrated this since she embarked on a ‘do bad all by myself’ journey. The beauty of music is in its fluidity in terms of genre, reception and season. We can’t wait for these songstresses – and even more- to keep serving us nothing but great music, raw talent and endless bops! *All images courtesy

GENGETONE The Defining Sound of 2019? BY MAUREEN KASUKU

2

019 has been a rollercoaster year for Kenyan Music; from the tweet storm #PlayKE earlier in the year, to the notorious royalty payout debacle involving the Music Copyright Society of Kenya. But the most monumental event in the industry has been the spectacular rise of new-age artists who’ve defied all the rules in the game. Their non-traditional approach to the music business has been refreshing; the disruption the static industry needed. This year has seen a digital shift in how music is distributed and consumed. These young, fresh, out-of-the box artists have fully embraced the internet as their showcase platform. They have shown and proven that conventional media outlets are no longer the sole gatekeepers dictating who gets to be the next breakout star. Their eccentric, controversial hits caused a lot of debate on what’s considered ‘Real Music’. The rivalry between the nostalgic fans of old-school artists and the new-school up-and-comers this year has been downright sitcom-ish. This new genre of music has received a lot of backlash with some music ‘gatekeepers’ condescendingly referring to it as ‘trash’. Music hasn’t suddenly become ‘trash’. All music is art, and all art—when put on display—is subject to the judgment and interpretation of both appreciative and unappreciative audiences. We delve into the defining sound of 2019-Gengetone. If you don’t live under a rock, you’ve probably heard of lamba lolo or wamlambez. Chances are, you’re already familiar with Gengetone. Gengetone is a sub-genre of Kenyan hip hop music that has

evolved from its predecessor Genge which was popular in the early to mid-2000s. Genge literally translates to ‘mass of people’. It is music made for the ‘Ordinary Masses’. Gengetone employs multilayered thin- or thick-textured onetrack drones with the occassional melodic accompaniment expressed by synthesizers; crisp, grimy, and rhythmic snares. It is characterized by its ominous and raunchy, gritty vocals and lyrical content conveyed in Sheng. Typical themes include general life in the ghetto and street culture. Topics vary from night life to casual sex, twerking, funny news sound-bites and even recreational drug use. Critical yikes. But the sordid lyrics are accompanied by catchy beats that compensate for the lack of philosophy in most, if not all Gengetone songs. To be fair, this is made-for-club music so expecting ‘deep reflection’ from these kinds of songs might be asking for too much. There has been a public backand-forth on who really invented Gengetone. Music pundits seem to agree that the (in)famous quartet Ethic are pioneers of this style of music. We profile the players who have disrupted the industry this year and who will no doubt go down as the defining sound of 2019. Ethic It was May 31st 2018 when a grainy YouTube video titled Lamba Lolo debuted on the video sharing platform and forever changed the game. The video went viral. Ethic set a precedent on how to get your big break in music by utilizing digital spaces and bypassing traditional media. Ethic have since inspired a new generation of artists with their one of a kind style. They’re raunchy, unapologetic and rabble-rousing. They are not out to make ‘acceptable music’ and

OCHUNGLO

yet, they have amassed a loyal fan base by being authentic and uninterested in aping what everyone else is doing. Their unique sound captured the attention of international music label: Universal Music Group through their local subsidiary AI Records who signed a long-term contract with them. They’ve since been churning out hit after hit with high quality accompanying music videos, performing at sold out concerts, gaining traction on social media and even collaborating with international dancehall artist Konshens on their club banger Figa. Because of copyright infringement, Figa has since been pulled down on all their digital platforms and a court ordered them to stop performing their colossal hit. That hasn’t stopped them from breaking the internet every time they drop a video on the internet. 2019 has been a great year for Ethic and it’s only up from here for the founders of Gengetone. Ochunglo Family The Ochunglo trio are known for their penchant for spoofing Kenyan pop culture and creating parodies that become contemporary radio hits. It’s fascinating how they can make mundane local news sound- bites into hit songs. From Bora Uhai to Krimino to Na Iwake-which has gone on to inspire memes and a feature in BBC 1Xtra in the UK! Their profanity-laced songs have earned them notoriety with the censorship board and they’ve also sparked contentious debates on the growing influence they have on kids listening to their music. They seem impenitent about it all. Several times on their social media platforms, they’ve made it clear in brazen language to anyone questioning their ‘morality’ to consider listening to alternative music because they are not about to stop. Sailors Gang They’ve made a name for themselves with their bawdy one-liners that have stealthily made their way into everyday vocabulary which are also synonymous with club anthems. You’ve probably Wamlambez, Wamnyonyez! in a matatu, a club or from some attention-seeking politician looking to rouse a crowd. True to form, Kenyans have taken the phrase international. Don’t be surprised

ETHIC to hear someone yell it out in downtown Paris. The hook in their (in)famous song has gained national notoriety and garnered millions of YouTube views. They got spotlighted by BBC after their video was banned by the Kenya Film Commission board for what they termed as ‘coded pornography’.

The focal point of Sailors Gang’s music is more often on the beats than the lyrics. Their songs are majorly comprised of ad-libs. Sailors Gang’s music favors call and response slogans in lieu of more substantive approaches and their party won’t stop anytime soon. Is Gengetone tone going to be

“Why so serious?” BY CHRISTINE ODEPH

ans are on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the release in October of the origin story of the biggest villain in the DC Universe – the Joker. The American psychological thriller was directed by Todd Phillips, who conceived the concept of Joker in 2016 and co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver in 2017. For inspiration in the writing process, Phillips and Silver drew on 1970s characters, Martin Scorsese’s works, and the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) which loaned its theme to the film’s premise. Due to its violent and disturbing content Joker is the first live-action Batman franchise film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The film is set in 1981 and tracks Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), an unsuccessful stand-up comedian who encounters violent thugs as he wanders through the streets of Gotham City in his clown costume;

a final nail in the coffin. Overlooked by society, Fleck slowly descends into insanity, beginning a life of chaos and crime as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

On August 31, 2019, Joker premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion, the festival’s highest prize- an unusual selection for the Venice competition. The film received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, but Phoenix’s performance as the film’s troubled, murderous central figure earned the most acclaim. “There is no movie without Joaquin Phoenix, the fiercest and bravest and most open-minded lion that I know,” Mr. Phillips said in his acceptance speech at the festival. His previous films include comedies such as “The Hangover,” its two sequels and “Old School.” On watching the film, Empire-writer Terrl White beautifully describes the film as “a sad, chaotic, slow-burn study of someone who isn’t visible;

who doesn’t even exist to the world around them. But your empathy, sympathy even, isn’t guaranteed, and it begins to dissolve as Arthur somehow moves even further to the edges. This is, we mustn’t forget, the story of how a villain was made. What they and the film is interested in is the mental, moral, emotional, physical make-up of the man who became the Joker.” The best way to sum this movie up is by sharing White’s final words after watching it, “bold, devastating and utterly beautiful, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have not just reimagined one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but reimagined the comic book movie itself.” Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Marc Maron, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, and Brian Tyree Henry, among others, appear in supporting roles. Joker is scheduled to open in theatres on October 4th. Buy tickets at www.kenyabuzz.com
