Kenyan Christmas Carols That Sleigh BY LENA ANYUOLO

A Sheng’ Christmas Song by Unknown

rom soulful covers of your old favourites to playful parodies of timeless bops, these are our favourite Christmas covers by Kenyan artists.

This has to be the most unique Christmas song you’ll probably ever hear. Instead of the favoured Nativity lyrics of most Christmas songs, this one catches the singer narrating the serious problems he’s having with his landlord on Christmas day over late payment. He weaves the hilarious tale against the backdrop of the Christmas mainstay melody, Joy to the World.

F

Thitima (Christmas Edition) by Kaymo & Stigah What do you do when your Gospel song spawns into a huge club banger? Well, Kaymo & Stigah decided to make the most of it and turn it into a Christmas song. They put a creative twist by narrating the Nativity scene on this remix to their original hit song, Thitima.

I Believe (Christmas Edition) by The Mavuno Worship Project The harmony, the piano, rap and overall arrangement of the song is what makes this jam special. It’s a shame we couldn’t find more of their songs online.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Kanjii & Aaron Frank Sinatra popularised Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and since then, it is one of the most covered Christmas songs of all time. Our very own Kanjii Mbugua and Aaron Rimbui have their own rendition of the song too, and it’s simply amazing. Check out their Christmas album, Christmas Simplified, available on iTunes.

O Happy Day (Boxing Day Special) by Just a Band with Sara Mitaru If you haven’t heard of Sara Mitaru or Just a Band, then welcome back from your 10-years-long coma. The Makmende hitmakers teamed up with Sara to create a memorable cover of O Happy Day that you need to have on your annual Christmas playlist, right beside Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. Check out The Just A Band Boxing Day Special digital album available on demand. You can stream all these fantastic songs on YouTube, in time for the holidays.

comes Christmas steak for the community. This age-old tradition post-Christmas day tradition has sketchy roots and has grown so popular that the county government of Kakamega is in the process of constructing arenas specifically for this spectacle. Kimalel Goat Auction (Baringo): Every year, around Christmas, the Kimalel hosts its annual goat auction. It was started in 1986 by now retired President Moi. Villagers bring their best goats to the town’s square and haggle with potential buyers. Prime goats are paraded in front of guests and they outbid each other for the biggest goats. Proceeds go back to the local community.

BY MAUREEN KASUKU & FLORA M’MBONE Christmas is celebrated by millions of people around the world, but we bet you’ve never heard of some of these wacky traditions. Forget Santa Claus. Forget hanging stockings on a mantle. Forget Mariah Carey. Or cozying up to a giddy holiday movie. Here’s a closer look at the unusual Christmas-time traditions

that people around Kenya partake in. Sigalagala Bull Fights (Kakamega): Every year on Boxing Day, villagers and visitors swarm western Kenya’s Kakamega county for a spectacle like no other - prized bull fights. Egged on by mobbing crowds, the bulls get locked into a fierce battle in an open, often chaotic environment. The winning bull takes home the prize money while the unfortunate loser be-

BONIFACE: Yes, Christmas is big here in Kenya. In fact, the traveling craze starts way earlier from Jamhuri Day onwards. We can guarantee Kenyans that this year will be different. You’ll not only have a comfy ride, but one that is safe and secure. And unlike our competitors in the matatu industry, we will not be hiking our prices.

KENYABUZZ: NipeLift. What’s it all about?

KENYABUZZ: So, it is the carpooling Uber? BONIFACE: Drivers on NipeLift do not make profits; they charge just enough to cover the car operating costs - fuel, wear and tear, servicing among others. This ensures that the car is not being used for gain which exempts it from PSV categorization. The motivation to carpool is not just for recouping costs but also environment conservation, traffic decongestion and cultivating harmony and coexistence among people. NipeLift isn’t only for long distance carpooling though. It can also be used for your commute to and from work, getting a lift to popular and fun events around town, or to the mall. KENYABUZZ: How did the app come through for stranded passengers during the recent matatu strike? BONIFACE: We did pretty well that week. Not only did we get people offering and booking

KENYABUZZ: Travelling to shagz for Christmas is a quintessential Kenyan tradition. It’s not cheap and often chaotic. Can NipeLift be the solution we’ve been waiting for?

ipeLift is a new Kenyan app looking to disrupt the public transport industry with a simple idea; carpooling. The app created by Boniface Githinji offers an uber cool way to carpool without any hitches. We caught up with Boniface, who now serves as the company CEO, to get deets on this brilliantly simple idea making waves. No sleigh? No problem. We also get tips on how to travel on a budget this Christmas.

BONIFACE: NipeLift is an online marketplace that connects drivers who have empty seats with passengers looking for better, cheaper and safer rides. Say you are travelling to Nakuru alone in your car, you may use the app to connect with passengers headed to the same destination. The passenger pays an earlier agreed on price that serves as the driver’s compensation.

more lifts on the app but also had a perfect opportunity to create awareness about our services. There was a lot of buzz online. We went viral and got over 200,000 impressions in a few hours. That still ranks high among our best weeks. KENYABUZZ: How is NipeLift different from other ride-sharing apps? BONIFACE: Our strongest point has to be safety and security. Whereas most of taxi hailing apps do background checks on drivers only, we also extend the same to all our passengers thus guaranteeing a multifaceted vetting and verification process. KENYABUZZ: Why should Kenyans get the NipeLift app? BONIFACE: For passengers NipeLift is the most affordable option available on the market today. All our CBD and its suburbs only cost Ksh

100 per seat. There are no wait time charges, no rush hour price hikes, just pure travelling bliss. As a driver, you get to set your preferences; do you allow smoking, pets, music or eating in car? Would you only want to ride with fellow women or colleagues from work? You only have to set it up once and the app will follow your preferences thereafter. We also require prepayments of lift bookings. KENYABUZZ: How are prices set? BONIFACE: Our costs are set using AA Kenya’s mileage compensation rates per kilometer. AA Kenya rates are scientifically computed to address the real costs of operating a car and are used world over by NGOs, corporates and governments to figure out travel allowances for their employees. We ensure that drivers do not make any profit and whatever is charged is only enough to cover actual incurred costs. This avoids a lot of regulatory issues with insurance and authorities.

BONIFACE: Definitely, a great idea! I am a big James Corden fan. My favourite Carpool Karaoke of all time was one he did with Michelle Obama and Missy Elliot. First, because I’m a big hip hop head, and secondly because Missy was my high school crush. She still is. My wife is gonna kill me for saying this. Sorry Monica. [Laughs] Is NipeLift here to stay or is it a flavour of the season type of app? BONIFACE: This is no fad; we’re in it, to win it. Public transportation in this country is ripe for disruption and I’m convinced NipeLift will etch its name in the books of history as the one company that changed public transportation in Africa for good. We’re cognizant of the many challenges that lay ahead but they are challenges we are prepared and determined to overcome. Whereas NipeLift is a new idea, my team and I aren’t new to business. We’ve been quite successful with our other company, Sematime, an edtech company which allows schools to communicate with over 1 million parents on our platform. Download the NipeLift app on Google Play Store. Follow them on social media: @NipeLift

If you think these Kenyan Christmas traditions are unusual, get a hold of these other uniquely oddball traditions from around the world. Christmas caterpillar (South Africa): While the rest of the world is stuffing turkeys and whipping out delish pumpkin pie recipes, in South Africa they prefer deep-fried caterpillars made from sundried Emperor Moths. It may sound cringe-inducing, but this specialty meal is a huge hit in the region and actually doesn’t look that bad. Also known as the Christmas caterpillar, the moth is covered in very festive hues, giving all who eat it a little extra luck for the coming year. Marago Carols Competition (Vihiga): Christmas Carols? No, they’re known as ‘Marago’ around here. When Quaker missionaries arrived in Maragoli land in the early 1900s, they brought with them a tradition of singing Christmas carols door-to-door. The Maragoli people adopted this and over the years, it has become a high stakes singing competition where your fave Christmas carols are sung exclusively in the Maragoli language. Kids from the various Quaker churches around town sign up for the Marago choir. The best are picked out from an auditions process and from December 1 to Christmas Eve, it’s all about carol practice, culminating in a final inter-church competition on Christmas day. Stakes are high and the best choir gets gifted in cash or kind.

Bad Santa (Austria): All kids around the world love Santa and put out cookies and milk on Christmas Eve for him when he comes down the chimney at night to deliver gifts. But we all know only the good kids get gifts. What about

the naughty ones? In Austria, the kids are very familiar with Krampus, the evil accomplice of St. Nicholas, who is meant to punish the naughty kids. Their Krampus Parade has to be one of the creepiest traditions around this jolly period as people dress up in ghoulish masks and parade the streets. Roller Skate Mass (Caracas, Venezuela): One worldwide Christmas tradition is going to Church/Mass on Christmas morning. Just when

you thought Christmas can’t get any cooler, in Venezuela capital of Caracas locals arrive to Mass in style rolling in on their roller skates. The tradition is so well ingrained that many of the city’s streets are closed to traffic from 8am on the day, so that the skating congregation can get to church safely. It’s even said that children will sleep with one lace from their skates tied around their toe, the other skate dangling from the window so that their friends can wake them up with a friendly tug on the lace.

2018 Breakout Stars Share Their Favourite Christmas Memories BY JACQUELINE KENDI STEPH KAPELA, RAPPER/SINGER 2018 Highlight: Opening for Big Shaq, WSTRN and Keri Hilson at The Terminal Concert. My most memorable Christmas has to be when I was really young, maybe 11 or 12. Mom and a couple of aunties had spent the afternoon, evening and night cooking; I’m talking chapo, pilau, beef, chicken, sausages, mandazis, and all kinds of mbogas. Christmas morning, as is routine, we went to church. I impatiently sat through another nativity story, and when it was finally time to go and feast, out of the blue mom says, “We are going to Aunt Lucy’s house first.” No words could have been sweeter, that was my favourite cousin’s place. They were rich which meant, even more food! Heck, I met two uncles who gave me 100 bob each for sweets. And, I still had all the food at home to look forward to. I’m getting a warm feeling even thinking about it. All I can say is Jesus was born to make me happy! Him and Britney Spears... Bad joke. ADELYNE NIMO, ACTOR 2018 Highlight: Lead actress in short film Watu Wote, which became the first Kenyan film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Christmas was the day

I was guaranteed a new outfit and I knew we would travel away from home to celebrate. Those are some of my favourite memories growing up. MBITHI, RAPPER 2018 Highlight: A show-stealing feature verse on King Kaka’s ‘Round 2’ It was this Christmas when Mama Mbithi bought me a pair of black Hanson suede shoes, baggy 05 jeans and those baggy G-Unit T-shirts (I idolized 50 Cent A LOT that time). Maaahn! I felt and looked so fresh I couldn’t sleep well on the 24th cause of the anticipation and anxiety of the next day’s look that I will be rocking. On the 25th, we didn’t even eat at home. She took us out to Jam Rescue on Ngong road where we had nyama choma, ice cream and played at the bouncing castles. It was a lot of fun. We then got back home to meet a feast of chapati and fried chicken. Those were the days you guys; that was my best Christmas ever. THE ONLY ROSA, POP MUSICIAN 2018 Highlight: Her breakout single ‘InSide’ which features Naiboi charting on radio. My favorite Christmas was the first time we ever had a Christmas tree. It was REAL! Not the stuff you see on TV. We literally had a tree that had grown through the year to almost 8-meters in our front yard in Greenfields, and I just realized it was a real

Candy Cane for Christmas, Anyone?

Christmas tree. It might sound funny but the whole hood came to our place to see it light up and everything. At that time, all the kids from the hood being at your place was a big deal. It felt like my birthday, not even Christmas. TUNJI, SHRAP ARTISTE 2018 Highlight: Dominated airwaves with the anthemic ‘Mat Za Ronga’ remix featuring Khaligraph Jones, and carried the momentum into radio hits, ‘Dash’ and ‘Mtu Wathii’. My favourite Christmas is when I was younger and we all chilled together as a family at one place. That never happens in my family, since everyone got their own thing going on. BRUZ NEWTON, GOSPEL MUSICIAN 2018 Highlight: Dropped his album Defined Movement in April, featuring mega dance hits ‘Bazokizo’ and ‘Zigwembe’. I am a lover of shoes, so my most memorable moment is when I had my first ever sports shoes two weeks before Christmas. I couldn’t stop looking at them, every single morning and night before I slept I would have a glance. On Christmas Day, I wore them with so much pride. If allowed I’d have preferred to walk naked with just the shoes on,

so everyone could notice them. TRINA MUNGAI, AFROPOP MUSICIAN 2018 Highlight: Signed with Taurus Musik record label, stand out feature on P-Unit’s ‘Me I’. My favorite Christmas memory has to be a couple of years back when my family and I flew to Paris. We spent Christmas Day shopping all around the city, and had dinner at the Eiffel Tower. We didn’t last long though because of the icy wind, our poor fingers were freezing but we still had a great time. LIKARION WAINAINA, FILMMAKER 2018 Highlight: His debut feature film Supa Modo picked as Kenya’s submission to the Oscars. My most memorable one happened two years ago. Our entire family met as usual on Christmas Day at our Mother’s place. She made a huge feast as per. The food was ready and I was eager to eat, when everything gets packed into containers and sufurias by my sister and mum. I was clueless at this point as to what was happening. We then got in the car and drove to Nairobi CBD in search of street kids and families to feed. I was in awe of mum that day. It was an amazing feeling to know that this beautiful mother of mine can still teach this grown man a lesson or two about life.

Chocolate fudge, pudding and eggnog are all savory delights that are common symbols of Christmas. So is the candy cane. We love to eat this indulgent J-shaped holiday candy also known as ‘Santa’s Cane’. It’s also one of the more popular choices for decorations during Christmas. The white and red striped candy cane which is traditionally flavoured with peppermint is a delicious reminder of what Christmas is all about. Ever wonder how these sweet sugar sticks came to be a preferred treat for Christmas celebrations? Who invented it? Legend has it that it was created in 18th Century Germany by a clergy man who wanted to make sure that children at the Cathedral stay quiet through the nativity plays re-enacting Christ’s birth. He asked the local candy maker to make ‘sugar sticks’ for the kids participating in the nativity service. What’s up with the J-shape? The clergy man had special instruction to the candy maker to add a

crook to the top of each stick so that they resemble a shepherd’s staff, which would help children remember the shepherds who visited the infant Jesus. When held upside down, the ‘J’ can also mean Jesus. Why white and red? The white was chosen to represent purity and the sinless life of Jesus. Red represents his crucifixion. Sweet, sweet peppermint… The choice of the fragrant minty flavour was inspired by an old Biblical spice called hyssop, which was a mark of sacrifice and purity. When did they become a Christmas ornament: A German-Swedish immigrant to America first turned candy canes into ornaments in 1870 when he had a strong longing for his old home in Europe. It went on to spread as a global Christmas tradition which still stands to today. Here’s wishing you all a Merry Christmas filled with lotsa candy cane!

T

he average Kenyan traveller is a spontaneous adventure-seeker who tends to take trips on a whim rather than go through meticulous pre-planning. A recent study by Saffir Africa, a new-age travel company, shows that 54% of Kenyans travel at the drop of a hat with the average planning time for a trip being not more than three weeks in advance. It also shows that Kenyans typically spend between 3- 5 days at a travel destination. All these factors combined probably explain why the Christmas holiday season has become the preferred road trips season for Kenyan millennials. The average Kenyan millennial doesn’t enjoy the luxuries of a bumper disposable income, so last minute holiday plans tend to be the norm amongst them. More to that, Kenyan millennials are ditching the long-standing ushago (upcountry) Christmas tradition of old in favour of seeking more visceral experiences through travel and adventure. The Saffir study found that only 12% travel to visit friends and family. The reason? Tech. Increased internet penetration is making our world smaller and smaller and at the touch of a button, we can check up on loved ones from all over the world. This gives us more time to travel to new places and curate unforgettable memories.

Kenyan tour operators are cashing in on this new shift, offering enticing road trip and flying packages to popular holidaying spots. “During Christmas, Dubai, Zanzibar, Maasai Mara and the Coast are the most popular destinations. Dubai is especially popular because of lenient visa requirements for Kenyans and it happens to be low season over there in December, therefore affordable,” says Marcus, a representative of local tour operator Bountiful Safaris. He added, “This year, we’ve noticed a spike in demand for Thailand and Singapore as holiday destinations.” Social media and an intense wanderlust amongst

millennials seems to be the biggest driver of this demand, “Someone might see influencers posting about having fun in Maurituis or Singapore and they’ll want to experience that for themselves. It is a fear of missing out on the trending destinations.” Kenyans pick destinations based recreational SF Kenya Buzz Christmas Miracleon Advert Print.pdf 1 19/11/18 value and to seek adventure, making group travel

the most popular form of travel. The preferred form of accommodation? Simple B&Bs and self- catered apartments or villas. Documenting their travel experience is also a big deal for a millennial, so scenic destinations attract more curiosity. Are you a Kenyan millennial? F

rom the return of Mary Poppins to Jason Momoa’s solo turn as Aquaman, here are the movies you shouldn’t miss at the cinemas this holiday season.

Welcome to Marwen

Mary Poppins Returns Why you should watch it: If you’re old enough to have Chim Chim Cher-eed with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke back when the awfully sentimental original came out, then this contemporary sequel to the classic Disney musical will fill you with extra joy this Christmas. Directed by Rob Marshall, the Academy Award winner of Chicago the musical, and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of hit Broadway musical Hamilton, this movie is guaranteed to be a hearty holiday treat.

Why you should watch it: Two words— Robert Zemeckis. The groundbreaking filmmaker behind schmaltzy classics such as Forrest Gump and The Walk directs Steve Carell in the most original movie of the year. Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.

Bumblebee Why you and the kids should watch it: To wash away that bad after-taste that the disastrous Transformers: The Last Knight left in your mouth. Blurgh! This whole franchise needed a hard reset and the people behind it are obliging, after finally realising that Transformers is for kids. And that is exactly who Bumblebee, in all its colour and light-heartedness, is made for. Well, kids as well as those of us who are still kids at heart.

Aquaman Why you should watch it: The James Wan-directed superhero flick is easily the most hotly anticipated DC Extended Universe movie since Wonder Woman. Jason Momoa will swim into cinemas in his own solo feature since first playing the The King of the Seven Seas in Justice League. Early reviews and reactions are buzzing about the film, and when phrases like “better than Wonder Woman” are bandied about, you know you can’t go wrong with Aquaman.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Why you should watch it: Because of black Spider-Man. Set in the “Spider-Verse” where there can be more than just one Spider-Man, this charming-looking animated movie turns our whole understanding of the beloved web-slinging hero on its head. In the classic Spider-Man mold, Miles Morales, who is unique among Spider-Men because of his inner city upbringing and mixed race background must juggle his high school life with his status as a superhero.
