‘Under The Kahawa Tree’, a Majestic Art Installation Within The Hub Karen Article by Tim Mworia.

The Hub Karen recently unveiled to the public ‘Under The Kahawa Tree’, a majestic art installation created by Kenyan artist Peter Ngugi. The 32-foot tall stainless steel and aluminium sculpture that towers over the mall’s lower piazza consists of four human figures, a park bench and a coffee tree. The art installation symbolizes the people who have been educated through proceeds from small scale coffee farming in different parts of Kenya. The unique figure is made up of over 9000 stainless steel spoons forming the canopy of the giant coffee tree. The delicately dominant tree also comes studded with over 3,000 berries seen in a soft glint of ruby red signifying that a good harvest is looming. Perhaps even move exciting is that the sculptures will be

dressed by a different retailer at the Hub every week. The mall partnered with The The GoDown Arts Centre to bring the piece to life. Ngugi said during the unveiling that it is a dream come true for him to have his art displayed at the Hub. “It is every artist’s dream that one day they would have their work in a public space,” adding, “It is a noble thing that The Hub Karen decided to bring art from within the walls of a gallery and so close to the public.” Jonathan Yach, The Hub Karen mall manager added, “We are committed to support local talent and the community around us. The Kahawa Tree breathes life into the mall. We want this piece to be a legacy to the people of Nairobi - they can touch it, interact with it and take pictures.” For more lifestyle articles please visit: www.kenyabuzz.com/lifestyle
