QUARTERLY UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 2013
EFFECTIVE DEVOLUTION Kenyans can be proud to have one of the most progressive constitutions on the African continent.
At its heart, a new, devolved system of governance is bringing new opportunities for participation and development closer to the Kenyan people. Devolution sets the stage for a stronger, more unified Kenya with greater potential to transform its economy and achieve lasting stability.

MARKET- DRIVEN GROWTH The development of fully-functioning, competitive value chains in maize, high-value horticulture crops and the dairy sector is enhancing food security, improving nutrition, and increasing economic opportunities.
Passion fruit has huge promise as a commercially valuable crop for Kenya. A growing number of passion fruit farmers are taking risks and adopting new ideas. They have improved their production levels, diversified and expanded local and export market linkages and raised family incomes.

HEALTH SYSTEMS STREGNTHENING
USAID Kenya
Usaid is building human capacity so that kenya can benefit from healthy, productive workers who will be more engaged citizens.
At a “Tunza outreach session in Nyamira county, a community health worker brings people together to discuss family planning. USAID is assisting the Ministry of Health to support health systems strengthening and formulate key policies and guidelines nationally, while also working with county officials to better plan, manage and finance quality health services to meet local needs.
QUALITY EDUCATION People who can read are healthier, have higher incomes and create safer, more stable democracies.
Cosmas Kavinda/USAID Kenya
A quality education prepares young people to participate in the 21st century workforce. USAID is building the capacity of health and education institutions and systems to sustainably deliver quality services. . “When I started reading, I read stories and remembered everything and when the exams come, I should be number one. said Collins Warui of the Kayole Community School in Nairobi (left).
INFORMED CITIZENS Kenya’s vision 2030 envisions a democratic system that is issue-based, people centered, results-oriented and accountable to the public.
USAID supports that vision by working with citizens to explore and express their own development priorities helping county governments grow into their new leadership roles. Lucy Kesi observed, “My vote is my voice. Disability is no longer an excuse for those of us not to vote. We have received civic and voter education and know how important it is for us to vote. We will vote.”

INCLUSIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH Kenyans who are adopting new ideas in agriculture are paving the way for growth while helping themselves and their communities become more prosperous and resilient.
Increasing the number of women and youth involved in farming, encouraging greater private sector investment, market-driven policies, and a focus on developing the potential of thousands of smallholder farmers are the keys to sustainable economic growth. Here, Salome Njambi, a Villagebased Advisor from Ambira village in Siaya County receives three week old chicks from an exchange program that gave farmers access to improved breeds.
YOUTH EMPOWERED Through village and county level bunges over a million Kenyan youth are engaged in serving their communities, growing their incomes, and are developing peaceful conflict resolution skills.
Margaret Njeri, Kennedy Mugo and Victoria Wangoi are among the 18 volunteers who helped youth in Nyeri mobilize themselves into 500 village bunges in just five months in 2013.
