QUARTERLY UPDATE—MARCH 2014

IMPROVING ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT USAID supported the Government of Kenya to develop a horticulture policy that reflects the need to meet regional and international standards. USAID works with processers and exporters to train smallholder farmers to meet the standards required by the export market. The new policy and USAID’s work is helping the Kenyan horticulture industry become more competitive.

PROMOTING RESILIENCY The adoption of good water, sanitation and hygiene practices reduces illness and death related to diarrhea and other infectious diseases. USAID is supporting improved sanitation and hygiene in homes, health facilities and nutrition centers throughout Kenya’s arid lands to improve the overall health of the people who live there. Healthier people are better able to adapt to survive periods of drought or famine.

FOSTERING ACCOUNTABLE COUNTY GOVERNMENTS Informed, engaged and responsible citizens are key to successful democracies. Here, Maasai elder Matthew Sinderia speaks out against gender-based violence. He and other community leaders are working with county government to create a joint action plan to improve county services for survivors of gender-based violence.

INCREASING KENYA OWNERSHIP OF HEALTH SYSTEMS Kenya’s 2012 policy to require confirmation of malaria before treatment is an international best practice. To make it easier for Kenyans to comply with this policy, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative procured 6.5 million rapid diagnostic test kits (RDTs) that provide low-tech, early diagnosis for malaria. RDTs are easy to use for health care workers and create a faster, more tolerable experience for Kenyans who come to get tested for malaria. Malaria diagnosis used to take hours – it now takes minutes.

EMPOWERING YOUTH TO PROMOTE THEIR OWN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Youth are the driving force for Kenya’s future economy. USAID youth programs support education, work-readiness trainings and career guidance. Here, Samuel Oninga promotes a USAID-supported entrepreneurship program that helped him create a business plan and access finance to get started.

INVESTING IN QUALITY EDUCATION SERVICES These school children at Abqedera Primary School in Garissa now have three new teachers. USAID works with communities to identify and meet local needs. For Garissa, the solution was new staff quarters to draw qualified teachers from outside the community. USAID is investing in Kenyan systems and organizations to promote sustainable, quality education throughout Kenya.

Credit mobilized by USAID in 2013

INCREASING PRIVATE CAPITAL FLOWS USAID works to expand commercial credit for the agriculture sector, making it possible for Kenyan farmers to invest in high-earning export products like these mangos and green beans. One way it does this is by working with financial institutions to develop loan products that specifically meet smallholder farmers’ needs.
