Harry Truman once said, 'Presidency is a glorious burden.' I was well surprised to see such a remark made by this superior statesman who had an incredible and incomparable motivation and wisdom. May be, his comments were the reflections of the tiresome responsibility bestowed upon him by the people of the united states. My expenence doesn't fall in line with Truman's experience. Rather, I will have to politely disagree with Truman's words. By all means, I am not tryrng to compare the job responsibilities of the leader of a great nation and that of a small, unique, ethnic organization. But the depth of involvement can be weighed comparably if two of these responsible offices tried to do full justice to the commitment made towards the objective. As a non-profil, voluntary organization, we underwent the normal process of waxing and waning, frustration and happiness and failu¡es and successes' But this process has been very helpful in shedding light on an important fact. It made me realize how

President is equipped with such a dedicated group, his job is nothing less than an eryoyable, involved social activity. Till date, we have successfully organized a talent show for kids and youth, a movie, road cleaning, and an evening of music and dance. Now, we are all set to celebrate the event ofthe year, ONAM. Onam has always been special to me as it

is strongly reminiscent of my lovely, colorful childhood. And this time, I am determined to have yet another cherishable Onam with you all.

Ilowever, fundamentalist elements in I-Iinduism, initially unleashed to counter fanatic Islam against forceful conversions and religious intolel'ance of foreign aggressors has becorre a bigger rnenace in itself, even though their numbels are small. The glowth of religious fundamentalism from various segments of the society is threatening the very social fabric ofthe country. While this is especially true in India, the rnatters on the global scene are not rnuch different. People ale watching each other with distrust. Some have to conceal their leal names to avoid plofiling. Government agencies are harassing and stripping its citizens of their fundalnental rights, even here in America, the proclaimed land of the fi'ee. Religious affiliations and practices that are supposed to be giving people the innel peace and help them coping up with their stressful lives, on the contrary are dividing and confusing people. Who can get the humanity out of this rnuddle and how? The presentation below is a heartfelt attempt fì'onr deep within to find out answers to these questions in a very unbiased manner.

Whethel we like it ol not, we live in the age of communication revolution, whele interconnectivity between people ale at lecord levels ofredundancy. People are linked with each other through various modes of cornmunication across different continents, laces, cultures, religions, beliefs, practices etc in spite of several hurdles and balriers. 'Ihe virtues and vices ofthe various religions, cultures and traditions are assessed and evaluated by one another. At this juncture, a religious individual who is optimistic of the future of mankind is left with two pertinent options. The first one is accepting the universal fact that virtues and vices co exist in this world. Individuals who follow this path would rehne themselves by choosing the positive factors congenial for a harrnonious coexistence. 'Ihey would restructure or remodel their perceptions and outlook so that it is transferled to the genelations yet to colne. 'Ihese individuals expelience a pleasant and coustructive growth in them. On the contrary, the second option offers a life cloistered within ones own beliefs and notions. This is atotal dislegard of the world around and bearing a dominant feeling that the changes are to be brought about only in others around. In such cases, individuals notice a slow and steady stagnation ofpersonal growth. Personally, I have a backglound that lnakes me think that it is a crilne if I don't vorlch for rnulti-r'eligious understanding. Born and brouglrt up as a lìoman Catholic Syrian Christian in Cochin, a scenic coastal town in Kerala, Sor¡thern lndia, I was fortunate to live amidst a rnulticultural society comprising Christians of rnany denorninations, Hindus from various sects, Muslims and some Jews. All of'them with varying deglee of commitment and connection to their religious background and rituals coexisted peacefLlly,

and they still do. The whole comrnunity considered the celebration of each sect, a time of rejoicernent and festivity. Prior'ity was given to community spirit and the elders in the

community fostered it. My Hindu neighbor would be upset with my parents, not for us being Christians, but for us being late in delivering their share of the delicacies that we make fbr Easter or Christmas. 1'hus I was f'ortunate to grow up observing and interacting mostly with a good nulnber of warm, open and t'iendly people belonging to val'ious faiths. V/ith this background, I am passionately comrnitted to rnulti-religious perspective. I believe that the same awalerìess of the entire mankind is the only viable solution to permanently end the religion related troubles that threaten its very existence. History of mankind proves that Religion and Spirituality have a perennial existence. lt is a natural phenomenon and surprisingly irnmortal, proved by the unsuccessful assault of communism on religion. The fact that man's needs are not just physical is as original and real as hurnanity itself, and any attempt to rethink that fact as a solution for the ploblerns that we have today are futile. Religions are there to stay; and eradication of belief systems is not the solution for the problems that religions create in the world. In this context, let us all collectively think and devise an effective and permanent solution to the troubles because of'the leligious faiths in fhe world so that generations yet to cotne would not have to worry about this menace anymore. I stlongly believe that human soul is a part of the one and only entity- The Almighty, and all religions will guide to the same Almighty. After a certain stage, in the journey of the soul to this eternal freedom, it doesn't t'eally matter in what religion one had believed or what faith one had followed or who one had thought was the real God. What matters is whether the individual had the zest to find out the ultimate truth, which I believe is love. Whether one had rnade progress with rightful deeds in identifying this truth during one's sojourn on the earth is what matters and not one's beliefs. V/hen I read Bible with my children everyday, I arn always on the lookout fot'Jesus' words that are not in terms with rny belief, and interestingly I haven't f'ound one yetl And surprisingly enough, The Bible is ill fact solidifying rny belief. I get confused sotnetimes, but as a matter of fact, I do understand that no ordinary and worldly human being can completely comprehend Cod and so it is perfectly all right to be confused as long as one would not wolry about that confusion. While the ultimate truth remains the same, the material facts we get from the scriptures are dependent on various extraneous factors such as the beliefs and nature of the author, the period it was written, the audience it was spoken to, the language followed, the political situation, the weather and so on. 'Meeting' lnealls we are together'. lt is necessal'y to be together; not being together is dangelous". lìe continued, "l wish to reaffirm the church's and my own deep and abiding respect for the spiritual and cultural values ofwhich you are the guardians." Addressing the concludin6l celemony o1'the ìnterreligious Assembly, in October 1999, Pope said, "ln all the many languages of prayer, let us ask the Spirit of God to enlighten us, guide us and give us strength so that, as lren and women who take their inspit'ation fiom their religious beließ, we may work together to build the future of humanity in halmony,.justice, ¡teacc and love." 50 years ago no one cor¡ld imagine these words coming 1ì"on a Popel I-le sought forgiveness for rnembers of'the Catholic Church ancl Catholic institt¡tior.rs for wrongdoings dating back centuries, including the Crusades, the lncluisition, and more recently, the Ilolocaust. Dr. Omanakkuffy Nair's voice was lilting, and resonated against the auditorium walls. The architects had designed the hall with perfect acoustics, I thought, I patted my right thigh with my palms rhythmically, in sync with the thaalam of the keerthanam. That was when I noticed three people walk up the aisle, looking for seats together. The person leading the group was in all probability the father of the two possibly teenage girls trailing behind him. Tliey stopped at the row where I was seated with my wife, and we instinctively pulled back our legs in unison. They paraded through till they reached their seats, and settled down. The keerthanam reached a crescendo, and the family to my left joined the test of the audience in a thunderous applause. Did they really appreciate the music or were they rnerely rnaking a weak aftempt to conform with the diverse crowd? In any case, the mridangist opened up a solo efforl, and I noticed the rnan sitting next to rne was keeping tempo with his right hand with perfection. It wasn't an easy task, since the thaalam was the moderately complex Mishrachaapu. My wife nudged me and mentioned the fact; I responded with a muffled "hmm" meaning that I had noticed. Pretty soon the man pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and squinted his eyes to read it in the dark. He showed the paper to his daughters and discussed it with them. After the next song, the trio stood up and hurried out of the hall, and we enjoyed the rest of the concert. At the end, we talked a while with a group of Malayalis seated around us. (We had deliberately chosen the spot so that we had a comforling 'Malayali comfort zone' around us). As rny wife and I walked out of the building towards the parking lot, we saw the father with his two daughters, who had changed from jeans to simplistic churidars. I reflected on all this while driving home. What had happened wouldn't be worth recounting or even thinking about, had the family who sat next to me not been white (I guess Caucasian could be the more politically correct term). had a fleeting glimpse of a moment when I had been to a

'Sting' conceft with my Indian friends. We stood out like a sore thumb amongst the stereofypical white crowd. I wondered briefly why this expelience from two years ago passed before my eyes, quickly concluding it has something to do with the universal appeal of music. The phrase 'Art tran* scends race, creed or color' scrolled like a rnarquee screen saver in front of me. I was quickly distracted by the sudden appearance of the lrighway exit that I was supposed to take, and focused on less philosophical themes such as whether or not to stop by Patel Brothers on the way home.

IJpholding our Culture: Whose Responsibility is it Anyway? Malini Sekhar Chairperson, Cultural and Literary Affairs Committee On June 16,2002, the Kerala Association of Greater Washington held an open discussion to address the question: "Upholding our Culture: Whose Responsibilify is it Anyway?" The question was by no means a sirnple one, with no easy or clear answers. But it was a beginning, a starting point fì'om which to begin to understand what we ale all thinking and where we are all corning fi'om. It is true that we are all Malayalees, and in that sense share the same cultural roots. Yet now more than ever before in America, there has emerged an interaction between Malayalees of different age groups and generations that creates quite an interesting dynamic within our community. There are definitely similarities between the three distinct groups of Malayalees which we identified on the day of the discussion to be: the generation of Malayalees who came hele many years ago, settled here with their families, and in lnany ways, created and sustained the Kel'ala Association, the second genel'ation, born and brought up with the culture their parents brought with thern from India years ago, and finally the group of young professionals that have colne to Arnerica relatively recently, and who right now, are the core of the individuals who attend KAGW events. Ilowever, there are also distinct differences between the groups, in their understanding for one another, and their notions of what our cultule is. From this observation, emerged the inspilation to begin a "dialogue," through this discussion. The more than twenty people in attendance that day would agree that a dialogue was definitely initiated thlough the discussion. There were several individuals from the different groups that had prepared brief remarks after which, the discussion was opened to the entire group. All involved concurred that upholding or preserving culture was important though their definitions and perspectives on what "cultul'e" is, differed. Several youngsters, more specifically childreu born and brought up here, emphasized the pride they do have in their heritage but that in can'ying it along with thern, they

would take special cale in extracting what they think is good about the Kerala cultule, and leaving the bad. Likewise, one younger participant commented that, "the discussion was good because we could finally hear other people's perspectives that are different frorn rny own." Another rather interesting point of view came from the younger professionals. The majority of them who attended asselted that sustaining the language (Malayalam) was imperative in upholding the Kerala culture, and did take issue with the fact that in their experiences, it was disappointing for thern to see that rnany children bom and brouglrt up here could not speak or understand the language. Finally, several wiser and definitely more experienced members in the group chimed into to say that the key is actually involvement, and with involvement comes more interaction and understanding between groups, and then maybe a more unified vision of what their culture is and how they want to preserve it. One individual commented that she wished there wel'e more diverse perspectives or individuals within oul comrnunity corning fiom a very diffelent place so one could have heard that perspective as well. Everyone at the event agreed however, that it was not one group or person's lesponsibility, but everyone's responsibility to "uphold culture."

Though the group in attendance was a slnallel'and more intirnate group, orìe could say that our goal was attained in that this was a beginning of sorts, lines ol'communication have opened up slightly. With this beginning, this idea, we must lnove forward and be pro-active, as ideas won't keep. Something must be done about them, in theory, and in practice.

Upholding Indian Culture: Whose Responsibility is It Anyway? Opinions of wo of the youngsters who attended the debate

SmithaViswanathan Culture is defined as "The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought." When I think of culture I think of traditions, language, food, art, clothing, things that have been changing since the beginning of time. How can we pinpoint a person, or a group of people to be held responsible to uphold a culture as rich, diverse, and evolving as ours? We shouldn't be looking at whose responsibility it is to uphold our culture. The fact is that culture should be upheld. It is a palent's responsibility to teach his children about his culture, it is in turn a child's responsibility take what he has leamed fi'om his parents and his life, and pass on his knowledge. I can guarantee you that my culture and therefore the culture that I pass on to tny children, will be different flom what my parents have taught me. But who's to say that it is "less Indian" or "not" Indian culture. I don't believe that culture is defined by a race. It is dehned by the people.

AnandViswanathan There are ceftain things about my culture that I don't accept. For example, religion, not being able to date, and the way boys and girls are treated differently. Even so, I still do accept many things in my culture. I accept having faith in anything that you believe in, the music, the food, the language, and the cultural venues such as this one.

I do not believe that upholding the lndian culture is anyone's responsibiliry. It is a choice. One can choose to pass on certain aspects oflndian culture that they find appropriate to uphold. As far as passing on the Indian culture to your children, or grandchildren, I believe it should at least be introduced to them. It should be left up to them what they accept and what they do not accept. It should never be forced upon them. Again, it is their choice. My parents have introduced me to many aspects oflndian culture, and I do and do not accept a lot ofthese things, as I listed before. I will choose what to pass on to my children, but I will also teach them that there are many other cultures in the world, and to accept them all.

Sargavasantham: A spring festival in Washington DC JijuPramod A sprightly, colorful and enteftaining event called Sargavasantham was organized by the Kerala Association of Greater Washington (KAGW) as part of their Spring Festival on May 12. A local music group called 'Capital Chorus' with their mix of Indian film songs in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi entertained the participants for the entire duration of the function. Talented dance groups comprising ofaspiring dancers danced to the tune oftoe-tapping lively songs. As a new initiative, the immense artistic talents of many comrnunity members were brought out at a flower show that was organized as part ofthis event. Festivities organized during the spring were usually called spring festival in the past. The executive committee of KAGW for 2002 wanted this festival to truly represent the spirit of spring. V/ith this in mind, Sargavasantham was conceived to include programs that would promote this idea. The president ofthe KAGW Prem Kumar welcomed the audience and reiterated the organization's commitment to actively involve as many members as possible in its activities this year. Many talented

volunteers like Smitha Menon, Jose Mathew, Greeshma Jose, and Archana Thampi presented the program. Event participants were Arya Namboodiri, Anupama, Preethy, Aswathy, Mini, Sneha, Jiju, Prem, Suresh, Vipin, Kutfy, Haridas, Nivi, Sapna, Reji, Suja, Karen, Rose, Liz, Jereesh, Nidish, Johnny, George, Joshu, Suma, Sunil, Sarah, Sally, Aleesha, Reji (Singer), Michael Fernando, Praveen, Smitha, Anoop, Reji (Tabla), Sam, Jijo, Sanjeev, Ayyappa, Prakash, Vigil and Anand. Many volunteers pitched in with their

efforts to serve food for the audience and participants. Dr. Mohan Viswanathan, secretary of the KAGW thanked the audience, volunteers and organizers who made this event a success. 'Bombay Grill', a restaurant based in Columbia, MD, proudly supported Sargavasantham.
