? æeø¿deoø'o 771 eaa.a.Ve The Kerala Association of Greater Washington is celebrating Cnam today, two days ahead of the traditional Thiruvonam day which falXs on Augu st27, 199 6. Even though we are away from our homeland, we celebrate Onam every year with great enthusiasm" Most of us find it an opportunity to show our youngsters what Onarn and its festivities mean to Keralites.

Ûn behalf of the Executive Committee of Kerala Association of Greater Washington, I have great pieasure in wishing you alI a huppy Onam" Onam is celebrated in Kerala with trernendous enthusiasm. It is primarlly a harvest festival observed not only in every home, but aiso in the open against the background of iush green tropical vegetation. Onarn is the most important Malayali celebration honoring Mahabali, the mythicai king, who visits Kerala once ayear. Coinciding with the harvest, it is aten-day tableau ofsong, dance and famiiy reunion culminating in the famous boat races held at several places on the

palm fringed lagoons. Various kinds of boats take part in the thrilling contests of "Vallamkali."

The first function organized by the Kerala Association this year was the Spring Festival and Literary Seminar which took place in April 1996. This year's Spring Festival turned out to be a memorable event because aunique symposium was arganizedto honor altr the four literary giants of Kerala who received Jnanapeetam, the highest National Literary Award. The Seminar was well represented by many literary staiwarts and was given wide publicity by Malayalam Fathrarn.

Also, this year the Committee decided to cookthe'Ona Sadya'" This indeed showsthe true Onarn spirit. lVithout the members' enthusiasm and support, it would have been impossible to undertake such a venture. I would like to thank the rnembers of our community who volunteered to lend a hand. It really shows their dedication towards the Association. - Madhuram Sivarajan

t¿¿toz¿al The Kerala Association of Greater Washington takes great pleasure in bringing this special edition to Kerala Digest during this festive season of Onam. Without a doubt, Onam is a special event for all Keralites. R.egardless of various religious backgrounds everyone in Kerala seems to celebrate Onam in different ways.

I still remember the days when my friends and tr spent out Onam hoiidays with various activities. After the first trirnester of school was over and all the term examinations were taken, for about two weeks there was no school, no homew-orks, and no assignments. ûnly thing we were interested. was to eat and play tili very late in the night" Towards the end ofthe Cnam vacation we became very sad simply becar.lse the wonderful tin'le we all had would soon be over and the thought of waiting f,or another year for Onam to arrive seerned unbearable. F{owever, time went on, year after year, Onam arrived with sumptuous feast, gifts, fun and

unusual power struggle between "Devas" and "Asuras". He was tricked very tactfully into losing his own kingdom and was forced to live in "Pathalam". Since he was a great ruler, an act of mercy was extended -- he was allowed to visit once a year his subjects, supposedly the people of Kerala. Onam is celebrated during the time of his annual visit. We do not know whether the story was real or mythicai; however, Onam gives us an opporfunity to rejoice; it helps us to emuiate an era when there was no crirne, do deceit, no cheating, no lies and everyone cared about tþre welfare of another. As we ceiebrate tnam, let us remember to hold our ideals higle throughout our life" Perhaps this celebration will give us an opportunity to reinforce the rnoral and eihiaal standards for

our daily

living.

T'his may help implant that desire in our hearts to share what we have r¿'ith others who are in need. May this season of celebrationheip us to seekthe welfare of others before we seek our own selfish pleasures.

fellowship.

Today's Onam celebrations wiil help those who were born or raised in this country to get a glimpse of the traditional Onam celebration ofKerala. And for everyone else, this will help to refresh the memories of Onam. Since we look upon our youth and children to caffy on our traditional Onam celebration, this issue of Kerala Digest is dedicated to the young generation of KAGW.

This year KAGW celebrates Onam onAugust 25. This date is fairly close to the time of Onam celebration in Kerala during the month of "Chingam", the first month according to the Malayalam Calender. This time of the year is very special in Kerala for various reasons. It is the beginning of another year afterthe end of a tenible Monsoon season with torrential rain, flood, and storm. It is also the season of harvest, prosperify, and goodwill among many. Nathan Purushoth aman, Editor

Kerala Jewel of India's Malabar Coast (Excerpts from an article publisired in Nationai Geographic Magazine by Peter Miller)

The Paperboy was just leaving as

by a village tea stand one morning in this small, tropical state on the south western coast of tndia. A cow lay on the ground in front of the stand, flicking its tail in the humid air.

Its villages are visibly cleaner and its cities less slum-ridden than in almost any other part of that nation. Health standards are high- Compared with the national average, Kerala's birth rate is a third lower, infant mortality' two-thirds less, life expectancy 14 years longer.

Inside, a group of men w'ere going over the latest nervs. Nothing happens in the morning in Kerala until everyone, from rice wo¡ker to

" How Kerala

grew to be so different from

the rest of India? 'lte have always been oriented towqrd exporÍs.' said an economist, 'T'oday our products are rubber. coffee, tea, cardamom, cashe*-s, pepper, and seqþod.' He might have added the talent and enterprise, because the state's most valuable

recent years has been people. Mala, valis working in Arab nations of the Persian Gulf and elseq'here have pumped ten billion rupees' (840 million dollars) a year into Kerala's otherwise sluggish economy. There is no shortage of qualified workers. 'Our 228 colleges produce thousands of degree halders every year ', said former chief minister Karunakaran. To the roaring approval ofthe crow'd, riders on one row of elephants lifted shocking pink parasols, sewn from the finest silks- with gold tassels around their rims. Not to be outdone, riders from the other temple raised baby blue parasols, and the crowd roared again. For an hour each side unveiled parasols of complexity and beauty. "
