Data News Endorsements...
Voting Matters Terry B. Jones Publisher/CEO
Data News Endorsements…Voting Matters It is that time again to go to the polls to vote. We at Data News Weekly in continuing to be true to our motto as “The People’s Paper” are committed to advocating for members of our community to go out and VOTE. These are our endorsements in some of the races that are on the November 8th ballot.
President of the United States: Hillary Clinton “People can judge me for what I’ve done. And I think when somebody’s out in the public eye, that’s what they do. So I’m fully comfortable with who I am, what I stand for and what I’ve always stood for.” –Hillary Clinton In the race for President of the United States the choice is clear; Hillary Clinton has the temperament, intelligence, and experience to lead. She has a worldview that is important given the threats both home and abroad. She has the public policy knowledge and skills to govern that will serve us well in the White House. Clinton has everything her opponent lacks, something that has been evident since the campaign began. Donald Trump has shown he is unfit to represent the most powerful nation in the world. It would be the worst thing in the world for us to elect him, a divisive small thinker that would rather build walls of division than bridges of understanding and inclusion. This is something Hillary Clinton has been doing her whole life; fighting for fairness and equality for those who are the neediest. Today, we are on the eve of a historical moment where we can elect the first woman President of the United States and continue the legacy set forth by Barack Obama and his progressive polices by electing Hillary Clinton to the nation’s highest office. He’s also been on the forefront of continuing to advocate for funds to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and more recently Baton Rouge after the recent floods. He brings with him the intelligence and temperament to be an effective leader and advocate for the Louisiana Congressional District 2.
Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal: Regina Bartholomew-Woods
Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-La)
Louisiana 2nd Congressional District: Cedric Richmond “High school dropout rates nationally — Not enough is being done on this issue. There are a lot of stats and a strong correlation between dropout rates and crime as well as poverty. Keeping our kids engaged and in school must become a national priority.” – Cedric Richmond. In the race for Louisiana 2nd Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives we endorse Cedric Richmond. Throughout his political career he has been fighting for the people of the district and beyond. He is an important voice for the district and is a rising star on Capitol Hill. Recently, he’s been chosen to be part of a congressional working group to help to improve relations between African-Americans and the police. He also took the lead in demanding the United States Department of Justice look into the death of Baton Rouge resident Alton Sterling who was shot and killed by police. Richmond is a member of many committees including Homeland Security and is the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity.
“I want to bring my diverse experience to the Court of Appeal and my appreciation and respect for the interests of everyday people who seek justice.” In the race for the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal we endorse Regina Bartholomew-Woods, she comes equipped with the experience and right temperament to serve on the bench. Prior to her judgeship, she

U.S. Senate: Caroline Fayard “The career politicians have failed us. We need a new voice.” In the race for the U.S. Senate, Data News Weekly endorses Caroline Fayard. She is a fresh face that will shake up the establishment in Washington D.C. In these pressing times we need a strong advocate that will represent all of the people of the State on Capitol Hill and she fits the bill. Several tragedies

luster response during Hurricane Katrina she sprang into action to dedicate herself to serving those in need. Caroline saw firsthand the deficiencies of the response by serving as a Law Clerk for the Fed-
eral Court which heard a landmark case brought on behalf of hurricane survivors who were going to be displaced from their housing at Christmas by FEMA. This is her second run for elected office. She ran a strong race for Lieutenant Governor in 2010 making it to the runoff receiving 43 percent of the vote. Now she is poised and ready to be our fresh voice in Washington to be above the politics and party bickering and fighting to get things done for the people of Louisiana. This is an important election and as some are trying to suppress our turnout we cannot be deterred from exercising our right to VOTE. Far too many have fought, struggled and sacrificed their lives for us to allow hate and division to win on Election Day. Because if you don’t vote, it is a vote for Trump and an agenda that is against the interest of our community. So let me re-emphasize a non-vote is a Trump vote so if you do not vote on the 8th of November, wake-up on the 9th of November and Donald Trump is your president. There is no one to blame but YOU. Please get out and VOTE!!!

A Mockery of Democracy 3 Mainstream Media Goes Tabloid, Grope-gate, Wikileaks and the Decline of Serious Discourse in American Politics
By Edwin Buggage Editor, Data News Weekly
Tabloid Coverage of the Presidential Election If we look at this election and what are the main issues that’s been covered by the mainstream media and being discussed by the American people, it resembles a bad soap opera plot, tabloid headline or reality show. We must ask ourselves as the nation is involved in a war on terror, a troubled economy, racial bias in
law enforcement, immigration and lack of quality education for many in this countr y that the focus is on Hillar y Clinton emails and the latest tweet by Donald Trump and not the issues facing the American people. What do these things say about us as a nation to ourselves and those around the world who see us as a global leader?
Democracy Reconsidered As I have spoken with people from across the globe about this election cycle, they are asking me what is going on in your countr y. I can only say that many things have happened in the last eight years that we have come to what is a low point in political discourse in this countr y. Something that is sometimes akin to a third world countr y and not a
mature democracy like the United States. As evidenced by Donald Trump in a recent debate with Hillar y Clinton where he threatened to if he is victorious to lock her up, it is a sad time for this countr y where sometimes it seems we are on the verge of mob rule in this nation. But as I say this conversely, I feel we are on the right path and simply experiencing growing pains. I believe we are continuing to make great steps for ward in widening the lanes of democracy for all of its citizens and the United States is still an example for the world to follow in many respects to how we function as a nation. On a positive note I would go further and say our political divide as portrayed by the traditional media and on social media does not mirror where we are
as a nation in the 21st Centur y. That we have made giant steps in our histor y as a nation. And if we are to move further in this great experiment, I feel it is important that we during this election cycle focus on the more serious issues of whether Hillar y Clinton or Donald Trump wins, when we go out and vote we ask ourselves who is best suited to govern and not get bogged down by the politics of personality. Because this election is not a popularity contest, it is not Dancing with the Stars, The Apprentice, or American Idol, but who will be the leader of the free world and there is a level of seriousness that is necessar y for this job and it is something we as voters must take in consideration when making this choice.
What is America’s Big Idea in the 21st Century? Even though we live in an age where scandal sells newspapers and glues viewers to the television and have them engaging in discussions on social media, it does not get to the core of what makes this nation great. It is our continued focus on the larger questions for our society and the big ideas for what the role of the United States will be in a changing global world. That is not to minimize some of the things that have come out and are covered in media, but to concentrate on the salacious and not the substantive does not get us any closer to making a great countr y greater and relevant in a changing world. But what it does ef fectively is it makes America seem small in a world that is looking to it for leadership on the issues that we all face across the globe.
The Quality of a Leader: Substance More Important than Style As we examine both candidates we ask ourselves who has the maturity and temperament best suited to lead? For example, in a more serious way can Donald Trump spend more time discussing his plans for the economy or how will he work with Congress or our global partners to fight terror. These are the things the American people need to be hearing from him instead of fighting with Gold Star Families or a former Miss Universe, the media or engaged in childish name calling of anyone who doesn’t agree with him. During this cycle Clinton admittedly has been more substantive than her opponent; but she must stay above the fray and protect the high ground if she is to effectively govern in the event she wins the election. Because it is important that after November 8, 2016, we must be able to as a nation move on and get down to the business of continuing down the road of being the greatest democracy the world has ever known.
The United States and its Future on the Global Stage But as we move forward we must realize we are far from a perfect nation, but we must continue to march in the direction we have charted throughout our storied history if we are to be relevant on the world stage in the 21st Century. So it is important that we get back to discussing the issues that matter in a more intelligent serious manner. It is essential if we want to continue to be a global leader and our rhetoric cannot simply be about making only America great, but humanity with us leading by example.

Claudia Jordan The True Definition of Beauty
Multi-talented Actress and former Housewives of Atlanta star speaks on Female Empowerment, Donald Trump, and her Hit Show the Next 15
By Edwin Buggage Data News Weekly Editor Claudia Jordan is the true definition of beauty in so many ways. Many know her from her most current roles on reality television programs including the Housewives of Atlanta, Celebrity Apprentice and her most recent show the Next 15 on TVOne. But behind her obvious physical beauty, she is an intelligent, talented and savvy businesswoman that is evolving and is an inspiration and symbol of female empowerment. “After Housewives of Atlanta, I wanted to move back into acting and this show came to me the Next 15. It is a reality show; it is about drama. It is not stereotypical, it is more about me and others on the show growing,” she says describing the program saying it appeals to a more progressive audience. For those who do not know
her stor y it began in Rhode Island where Jordan began competing and winning beauty pageants in the early 90’s becoming only the second African-American to hold the title in her home state. She then competed at the Miss USA Pageant in 1997 where she placed in the top 10. Soon thereafter, she began working in local television and doing modeling work, she then took a leap of faith and decided she would move to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of being involved in the entertainment industr y. “I was in the Miss USA pageant then I moved out to L.A. and was involved in hosting and acting. I worked on the Price is Right as one of the Barker’s Beauty’s, I worked on the show Deal or No Deal and Fox on The Best Damn Sports Show in addition to appearing in television and films.” During her career Jordan, was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice and co-host of the Miss Universe Pageant in 2009 with Billy Bush. And since this is an election year has been asked countless times about Presidential Candidate Donald Trump; someone she considers a mentor in business but disagrees with in matters of politics. “He believed in me and put me on three shows, he had me
Claudia Jourdan
host Miss Universe. I had a great relationship with him. As far as politically we differ in our views, I was a Barack Obama supporter and we got into disagreements about it. But I feel he is a great entertainment mogul, but we disagree politically and what is happening at his rallies and in his campaign is troubling to me and I feel is taking the countr y in the wrong direction.” Throughout her career Jordan says she always tries to keep it classy and works to be a good example and empower women. She says beauty is not
just about looks that true beauty comes from within. “When I think of true beauty there are some people who some would say are absolutely gorgeous, but if I see someone not of good character or display bad behavior or prostituting themselves out or being crass. I don’t think of them as beautiful.” “As Black women on reality television, we are brought out to fight each other and people find that entertaining and when you tr y to avoid it you get called boring and I feel possibly it is the producers but some of it is what the market wants. And if people didn’t want it would not be orchestrated. Reality television has opened my eyes. You can go on there with the best intentions and it’s so amazing to see how things wind up on the cutting room floor on reality TV.”

Black Women’s Roundtable Launches National Vote Effort By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA News Wire Contributor The Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) and the Unity’16 Campaign of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) recently announced a nationwide “Get Out the Vote” campaign. BWR is the women and girls empowerment arm of The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation. A plan called “State of Emergency #PoweroftheSisterVote” will focus attention on key battleground states in the race for the White House. Those states include Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. The goal of the campaign is to maximize the African American voter turnout for November 8. The three-week push will in-
Melanie Campbell, the president and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, said that Black women are powerful force when it comes to getting our families and friends out to vote. ago. African American women have maintained the highest voting percentage of any group in the American electorate for the last two presidential cycles. “Black women are a powerful force when it comes to getting our families and friends out to vote and we are the ‘secret sauce’ to who gets elected to the White House, Congress, state and local elections,” said Melanie Campbell, the convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable. “We are working to encourage our millennial Black women to take the lead in ensuring that they use peerto-peer interaction to encourage young people to vote and to get their communities to vote.” In lieu of new laws that make it harder to vote implemented over the years, voter suppression will be a key focus.
clude several “get out the vote” activities in the above states. The volatility of the election cycle that has given rise to a reality TV star and real estate mogul, Donald Trump, has made the turnout strategies for both parties of vital importance. No one expects the turnout percentage to be what it was in 2008 and 2012 when a historic candidate like Barack Obama, was on the top of the ticket. President Obama’s back-toback victories showed the power of minority voters. Soon after President Obama was elected, new voter ID laws popped up in states with Republican Governors and legislatures. Political analysts wonder if the same constituencies will turnout at the same levels as they did four and eight years
“It is vital for Black millennials to seize our voting power in order to hold elected officials accountable to win on the issues we care including criminal justice and policing reform,” said Tamika Mallory, a board member of Justice League NYC.
The “Get Out The Vote” efforts will include four town halls: Georgia, North Carolina – October 17-23 Ohio, North Carolina, Alabama – October 23-29 Florida, North Carolina – October 30-November 5 Virginia & Pennsylvania – Blitz Weekends – October 30 and November 5 A detailed calendar can be found at www.unitycampaign.org.

To Flu Shot or Not to Flu Shot? That is the Question…
Job Opportunity
Eric Griggs, M.D., Danyelle Kimble, and , Raven Spooner Flu season is here! Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a respiratory infection caused by a virus. The flu is sometimes confused with a cold or 24 hour “bug.” Signs of the flu are high fever, sore muscles and throat, and being tired or sleepy. The flu is very contagious. The flu vaccine is effective and safe in preventing the flu and its complications. By receiving the flu vaccine, you also decrease your chances of being hospitalized and possibly death. It is suggested that anyone 6 months and older receive the vaccine. Myths and side effects are a few factors that stop people from getting the flu shot. Side effects include sore shoulder, fever, cough, and sore throat. A common myth about the vaccine is that it will give
you the flu. The vaccine cannot make you sick, because it is made from inactive egg grown viruses. If you have already had the flu, it is still recommended to get the flu shot. The flu can be caught more than once in a flu season, due to the different strains. The sooner you get the vaccine, the better your chances of defeating the flu! Get checked. Get Fit.
