The Clover Fire north of the Kern River Valley on the Kern Plateau has slowed down, but now there is a big new one – the Piute Fire in the mountains between Walker Basin and the Kern River Valley. The Piute Fire had jumped to over 13,504 acres Wednesday morning, about the same size as the Clover Fire. Some sources said over 1,200 structures were threatened. The Piute Fire started Saturday, June 28, at about 3 p.m. The point of origin was on Piute Mountain Road, north of Twin Oaks in Walker Basin. The fire was driven north by prevailing winds and it quickly grew in size, sending up a huge smoke column. Tuesday it flared up again, and the column was even bigger. The

winds were taking it more to the northeast. The U.S. Forest Service has officially closed the Piute Fire area to all traffic. Exceptions are fire personnel, landowners and residents. Fines of up to $10,000 may apply. The order is effective through July 8 or until the Piute Fire is fully suppressed. Currently the area closed is from Piute Mountain Road at Caliente Creek Road; Saddle Springs Road at Caliente/Bodfish Road; Jawbone Canyon Road south of Piute Mountain Road; Roads 29S02 and 29S03 and Erskine Creek Road at pavement. Update from the National Fire Incident Team: “Tuesday night, the fire made a run towards the southeast flank, threatening structures. Crews

There is no confusion – you can’t set off your own fireworks in the Kern River Valley. It’s illegal, and it’s stupid. There’s a tremendous fire danger in this area. The evidence is all the smoke in the air this week. However, if you still want to see fireworks, on Saturday night the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a free professional show of fireworks over the lake at Engineers Point, with fire control at the ready. Cindy Thill of the U.S. Forest Service said that those wishing to view the fireworks from the Auxiliary Dam area will not be subject to the recreation fees there. The Forest Service has agreed to let those who wish to watch the fireworks to come into the camping area without charge. “The public can start arriving at dusk and will need to leave after the show,” Thill said. The show will start sometime around 8:45 p.m. The fireworks show will be a perfect way to celebrate the independence of our country. We must always remember that our freedom was won by our citizens with their sacrifices. Some even gave the ultimate sacrifice – their lives. Independence Day is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. However, John Hancock, as the elected President of the Second Continental Congress, was the only person to sign the Declaration on July 4. It was not until Aug. 2, 1776 that the remaining 55 other delegates began to sign the document.
Clover Fire update The Clover Fire on the Kern Plateau was 70 percent contained as of Wednesday morning. It stood at 15,262 acres. It was changed from a wildland fire-use fire to a suppression fire on Thursday, June 26 and has not increased acreage much since then. The Pacific Crest Trail is still affected by the fire. The Courier has updates on detours, and also more information for holiday visitors on page 4.

Meeting about local recreation fees July 8 On Tuesday, July 8 at 6 p.m., there will be a Town Hall Meeting at the Senior Center to discuss the Sequoia National Forest’s proposed High Impact Recreation Area fees around the lake, along the Upper Kern and along the Lloyds Meadow Road in the high country. Forest Service representatives have been invited. Sponsored by the Lake Isabella-Bodfish Property Owners Association. Movie about Kern Valley history to be screened Aug. 1 Mark your calendars for Friday evening, Aug. 1 to enjoy a special event. The Kern River Valley Historical Society and the Kern County Museum are presenting two movies for the price of one, and both will add to our knowledge of the history of our area. The location is the refurbished old-time movie house, the Fox Theatre in Bakersfield. One of the movies is about the historic Lopez Hill House. It was moved to the Kern County Museum in Bakersfield earlier this year. The filming of the entire move has been readied for the big screen by award-winning cinematographer Chuck Barbee. This documentary short has been named “The House with Three Lives.” The double feature will be the first chance for many citizens to view Barbee's “Wild West Country,” a feature-length docudrama about the history of Kern County's rugged Southern Sierra, based on the books by the late cowboy/historian Bob Powers. Tickets are available through vallitix.com and profits will go toward the restoration of the Lopez Hill House. – Kern River Valley Historical Society

Things I Have Noticed

A ghost town ... underground Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
I was watching TV the other night when I noticed a program called “The City Beneath Rome.” It was a story about the catacombs and living spaces deep in the ground beneath the ancient city of Rome. It was eerie, interesting and made me want to go there and explore this very old underground city Rod where people lived their lives Middleworth long ago. And then I thought, “Wait, I don't have to go to Rome. We already have an underground city here on the West Coast.” It's Old Downtown Seattle, a place we visited a few years ago. That day, we were directed to a renovated downtown 1890s saloon and were told to bring flashlights. There we paid a guide $10 each for what turned out to be the strangest tour we'd ever taken. We were told Seattle raised its street level many years ago and the first floor of the old downtown buildings became underground and were abandoned. Slipping down an alley, we entered a building, went down a flight of stairs, and there we were,
beneath the modern streets of Seattle. We were able to walk on the old sidewalk looking up at the newer one. We passed by old store fronts, complete with the original plate glass windows and their gold leafed lettering. Old furniture and shelving were still there in some of the dusty rooms, some still used as storage for the shops above. I remember well the last story we were told. When they raised the streets to where they are now, the city paid the bill. Raising the sidewalks, however, was to be at the storeowners’ expense. Storeowners balked and refused to pay. The city went ahead and raised the streets, but for a while the sidewalks remained unchanged. To cross some streets, said our guide, you had to climb a ladder to the street, walk across, go down a ladder on the other side and up another to make the crossing. After almost a year an agreement was reached and finally the street and sidewalks were matched. If you have a computer go to http://www.undergroundtour.com/ Read about it, and on your next visit to Seattle give it a go. Whoooo ... Let’s Go Fishing
What’s his name catches some trout Jack Bustamante Kern River Courier Columnist
Where are the big crappie? This week I have only heard about the little ones. Most of the crappie fishermen are saying that maybe one out of ten is a bigger than hand sized keeper. They are still at it, though. Maybe the big ones will come in tomorrow. Lots of nice catfish are biting all around the lake. Nightcrawlers and shad are the hot baits. I hear Camp Nine and Stine Cove are getting a lot of the big ones. Early morning trout fishermen are still bringing in some nice ones at B.S. Beach. Deep trollers are catching some good trout also, running between Engineers Point and Rocky Point. Trout action upriver is fantastic. The river has slowed down and now and fishing conditions are ideal. For all you local fishermen who know the out of the way honey holes, now’s the time. The happy fisherman pictured (me) caught four nice ones in no time at all. You should have seen the big one that got away!

Must See: Kern Valley Museum The Kern River Valley is the ancestral home of the Tubatulabal people, who have lived here for hundreds of years. In the 1840s, the rapidly expanding United States was exploring the West and discovered the little valley tucked in the Sierra Nevada. A decade later, prospectors looking for gold poured over the Greenhorn Mountains from the west and over Walker Pass to the east, establishing homes and towns. Old Kernville and Old Isabella are now under Isabella Lake, but many of the buildings were moved to new Kernville and new Isabella (renamed Lake Isabella) in the 1950s. Older towns and buildings are scattered throughout the valley, each with their own story. Come to the Kern Valley Museum to see historic photos of what the valley looked like before the lake. (It’s actually a reservoir, but who’s counting.) The museum houses hundreds of exhibits and artifacts from the coming of the electrical power companies in the early 1900s to the days of filming Western movies here to the idyllic days of cattle ranching and cowboying to the bucolic place it is today, pointing back to a simpler day and time. The Kern Valley Museum is free to visit, but donations are welcome and appreciated. The museum is supported by the proud citizens of the Kern River Valley, who have formed a historical society that is 800 members strong. The museum, on Big Blue Road in Kernville, is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Kern River Courier

And that’s the truth about Tomlin By Cindy Elavsky
it as much as I did.
Q: I really love Lily Tomlin, but I haven't seen her lately. What has she been working on recently? -Sara F., via email A: Lily is currently in production on a couple of movies, "Seniors" and "Sweet Baby Jesus." She also Lily Tomlin played Deborah Fiderer on several seasons of "The West Wing," which you can find on DVD. One of her funniest characters in recent years is that of Amelia Shakespeare on "12 Miles of Bad Road," which also stars Gary Cole, Mary Kay Place and David Andrews. The best way I can think of to describe the show is "Dallas" meets "Arrested Development." I was fortunate enough to be able to view the first six episodes of this series, which is produced by Linda BloodworthThomason of "Designing Women" fame, and really hope this series gets picked up by one of the networks so that the rest of the country can enjoy
*** Q: I was so shocked to hear of newsman Tim Russert's death last month. This season's election coverage will not be the same, to say the least. I read that he had a heart attack. Was he in poor health before this? He always looked so healthy and robust to me. -- June W., via email A: I think the entire country was shocked to hear of Tim's sudden death at the young age of 58. He suffered a massive heart attack while at his office in Washington, D.C. While Tim was known to have asymptomatic coronary artery disease, which resulted in hardening of his coronary arteries, his physician was surprised by Tim's death, because he had undergone a stress test back in April, which had come out normal. *** Have a question for Cindy? Health Insurance Matters
Extra help for Medicare prescription medication users Harry P. Thal, CSA Kern River Courier Columnist
Many people on Medicare are having trouble paying for their prescription drugs. With the growing costs of prescriptions, many people have entered or will soon enter the "donut hole," which is a gap in coverage where a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D) will no longer pay. People who are on Medicare and have limited income and means may find a little known benefit called Medicare "Extra Help." This is designed for those people who are not poor enough to qualify for Medi-Cal, but do have financial problems. Some people with limited income and resources also are eligible for
extra help to pay for the costsmonthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments-related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. The extra help could be worth up to $3,600 per year. Many people qualify for these big savings and don't even know it. To help Social Security deterHarry Thal mine if you are eligible for the extra help, you will need to file an Application for Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs (SSA-1020). Most of the questions on the application deal
with income and resource. They do not ask for documentation initially to support the information you provide, but they will match your information with data available from other federal agencies. To qualify for extra help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs, your annual income must be limited to $15,600 for an individual ($21,000 for a married couple living together). They also want to know about other assets. To get the extra help, your total resources must be limited to $11,990 for an individual ($23,970 for a married couple living together). Resources include the value of the things you own. Some examples are: Real estate (other than your primary residence); Bank accounts, including checking, savings and certificates of deposit;
Stocks; Bonds, including U.S. Savings Bonds; Mutual funds; Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs); or Cash at home or anywhere else. If you qualify, you will find that your premiums on your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan will be reduced to as little as $0 per month, your co-pays at the pharmacy will be as little as $2.10 and there will not be a donut hole for you. protected the structures by firing around them. Crews have made good progress containing the spot fire on the southeast flank. The fire continues to progress east towards Kelso Creek. Firefighters continue their work securing Erskine Creek Road and continue to provide structure protection along Piute Mountain Road, Rocky Point, Valley View and Erskine Creek. “Evacuations: Brown Meadow, French Meadow and Camp Nick Williams have been evacuated. The following areas continue to be under recommended evacuation: Valley View off of Saddle Spring Road, Red Mountain Estates, Claraville, Rocky Point and Liebel Ranch. A precautionary evacuation has been issued for Thompson Canyon. An Evacuation Center has been opened by the Red Cross at the Lake Isabella Veterans Building/Senior Center, 6405 Lake Isabella Blvd. Members of the community with respiratory problems may go to the evacuation center. Individuals who require additional time to evacuate due to disabilities or animals are urged to consider beginning the evacuation process early. Recommended evacuations are the highest level issued.” So far, there have been no structures burned, although six outbuildings and one abandoned cabin have been damaged. The fire was five percent contained by Wednesday morning. There were 998 personnel assigned to the fire. The cause is still under investigation. The county has established a 2-1-1 call center for the general public to gain information about the Piute Fire, evacuation notices, and evacuation centers. The public can call 2-1-1 from anywhere in Kern County. Phone lines will be staffed 24 hours a day with staff from 2-1-1 and volunteers from the Kern County Chapter of the Red Cross. California Joe’s Country Living
Butterfly watchers here California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
I thought a monarch was a king. But there’s a monarch in my garden. Flits around like a king. Come to think of it, the last time we were in Las Vegas we took two visits I really enjoyed. One was to the desert preserve to see all the plants and trees. The other visit was to California Joe the Bellagio where we went inside the atrium and watched all the butterflies swarming about. The North American Butterfly Association was here this past week, 191 strong! Put on programs and did all sorts of field trips. One of them was held right across the street from the Kernville golf course along the side of the road where I used to jog. They headquartered at the Kernville Elementary School. Took their evening meal at the Family Life Center in Wofford Heights. Showed videos and gave lectures there. Members came from all over the country-New Jersey,North Carolina, Shreveport, La. (they drove here in their station wagon). I asked them why they came all this way to see butterflies.
They said it's fun and all you need is a pair of binoculars and maybe a camera (the old days of chasing the little critters with a net is long over). Besides, the little boogers don't start flitting about until 9 or 10 in the morning. You don't have to get up early. Not like bass fishing at all. The man to ask about all that is Bob Barnes, who left the Kern River Preserve and moved to Ridgecrest. He still coordinates these programs, assisted by Allison Sheehey, who’s taken over his job as Outreach Director at the Preserve. Fun to see them both again doing their thing in a valley just chuck full of butterflies, it seems. Anyway, I been thinking I've got to put out new red plastic hummer jars so the little birdies will come looking for their nectar. And now I need to factor in butterflies as well, it seems. Maybe my job should be butterfly disturber. Seems every morning when I'm out watering I inadvertently spray the little wingers and they don't like it much. Can't say as I blame ‘em. How would you like to get up out of a wet bed every morning? Especially if you're a king! California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob into meat and tomato mixture. Add spices. Stir well and let simmer for about 30 to 40 minutes. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Mix the meat and sauce with the noodles. Serve with dinner rolls or brown and serve rolls. NOTE: Makes a large amount. Can be adjusted to any size. Bodfish Bob's Candied Jalapeno Peppers 1 gallon. Sliced jalapeno peppers * 5 pounds bag of sugar 1 tablespoon alum
Bodfish Bob Kern River Courier Columnist
Bodfish Bob's Bacon Spaghetti 1 lb bacon 1 large onion 4 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce (save cans*) 1 tablespoon garlic powder (more or less to taste) 2 teaspoons onion powder (more or less to taste) 2 teaspoons oregano (more or less to taste) 2 teaspoons sweet basil (more or less to taste) 1 (2 lb) package spaghetti noodles
Cut bacon and onion into small pieces. Cook in pot or large pan till lightly browned and the onions are tender. Drain grease. Add tomato sauce. *Fill 2 of the 4 cans with water and stir. Transfer water between cans and pour
Drain peppers into a large stainless steel pan. Add the sugar to the pepper juice and heat it just enough to let the sugar melt. Remove from the heat and let it cool. Once the juice and sugar mixture has cooled, pour it over the peppers and stir in the alum. Lightly cover with a loose lid. Let stand on the counter 4 or 5 days. Stir every day. When peppers take on a translucent or clear color they are ready. If you want to can them, bring to a boil and put in prepared hot jars and seal. Turn jar upside down for 5 minutes then right side up . Let cool before storing. *Gallon cans of sliced pickled jalapeno peppers from Wal-Mart work perfectly. A new resolution authored by Assemblymember Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield) has passed the state legislature that will designate a portion of State Highway Route 178 from the mouth of Kern Canyon eastbound to its intersection with Kernville Road as “Kern County Deputy Sheriff William ‘Joe’ Hudnall, Jr., Memorial Highway.” Approval by the State Senate was the last step in the legislative process and signs will be placed along the highway by the Department of Transportation to indicate the designation, once there are private funds available to cover the costs of the signs. Hudnall was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 14, 2006, while transporting a prisoner from his duty assignment in Kernville to Bakersfield. His patrol unit was struck head-on by a vehicle operated by a driver who was under the influence of a controlled substance while on Highway 178 in the Kern Canyon.

It’s just wearisome Clarence Semonious Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship
About 80% of the people who drive do so in a safe manner. Well, most of the time. In fact, traffic enforcement is a balance between those who voluntarily obey the laws and those who need the added incentive of enforcement citations. This week marks the inauguration of yet another law intended to make driving a safe experience. The bane of the annual, New Year ritual of reading the list of new laws that come into effect being extended into July caused some amuseSemonious ment because this Sunday, in many Lutheran churches, there will be a prayer that begins, "Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, Your mercy attends us all our days. Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world…." I am sure that hands-free cell phones was not the reason. But if the prayer fits… The wearisome changes of this world are at the same time similar to all, and unique to various groups. I doesn't take one long to know that the idea of what is wearisome in on the mind of this writer. "'Meaningless! Meaningless!' says the Teacher. 'Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.' What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?" Ecclesiastes 1:2-3. The Teacher, as this writer called himself, searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is
the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil." Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. Between the all the commandments and the many admonitions to be righteous are jewels, precious nuggets of strength and support that demonstrate that God has already answered Sunday's prayer. One of those jewels is peace: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7. Another is a condensed version of the commandments Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40. The wearisome changes of this world are within the promises of God and will because "we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28. Even the freedoms we celebrate, and for which we remember those whose sacrifice we honor, came because of God's blessings.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don't be Sheepish about asking questions and demanding answers. You not only gain needed information, but also respect for your steadfast search for the truth. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A money problem that shows up early in the week is expeditiously resolved by savvy Bovines who know how to turn a momentary financial lapse into a monetary gain. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It's a good time to shed negative energy-draining forces and develop a positive approach to handling current, as well as upcoming, personal and/or professional situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your urge to do your best on a current task is commendable. But don't let it become all-consuming. Spend some spiritually restorative time with those who love you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas to take your bows for your recent achievements and then go off to enjoy some fun times with your prides and joys. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A negative response to a well-intentioned suggestion could communicate a sense of distrust you might later find hard to refute. Think carefully before reacting. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your loving attention comforts a family member who is feel-

But those who know you will support your penchant for never settling for less than the truth. So stay with it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A pesky situation from the past recurs, albeit in an altered form. Deal with it promptly before it can go from merely irksome to decidedly troublesome. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don't wait too long to submit your proposals after giving them a last look-over. If necessary, you should be able to defend any portion called into question. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A bid to use your workplace dispute-settling skills in another situation is tempting. But be careful: You might not have all the facts you'll need if you agree to do it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That sense of self-doubt is so untypical of you, you should have no qualms in shaking it off. Remind yourself of all you've done and can do, and then do it again. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to charm others without sacrificing sincerity is what makes people want to follow your leadership.

Going Native
Yerba Mansa is not a city Marya Miller Kern River Courier Columnist
As you drive east on Highway 178 this time of year, past the flooded pastures in Weldon, you will notice white flowers of the Yerba Mansa plant growing among the grasses of some pastures and along the drainage ditches next to the road. These 12 to Marya Miller 18 inch tall flowers are cone-shaped with creamy white petal-like bracts surrounding the base of the cone. Anemopsis californica is a hollowstemmed herb with dark green leaves on long stalks reaching two feet in height and with creeping roots that help the plant spread to find moisture. In the late fall season the flowers die back and the leaves of the plant begin to turn a rich, deep red. Eventually the leaves dry completely and the aboveground part of the plant disappears.
We planted yerba mansa next to our pond because it is quite attractive in spring, summer and fall and because it has a wonderful spicy, woodsy odor that is fresh and healing. And in fact it was and still is often used medicinally. The early Spanish settlers learned to use it from the Native Americans for a variety of ailments and injuries. The root has a spicy smell and a peppery taste and was used as a blood purifier, for rheumatism, and to reduce swellings. The powdered root was used on sores. It is said that in more modern times ranch wives made a paste of the leaves (in a blender) that is said to be very effective in treating cuts and wounds in livestock and man. Yerba mansa is the only California native plant that is in the Lizardtail family. An especially good place to see this interesting plant is at the Kern River Preserve near the door to the visitor's center. “Going Native” discusses the ways native plants can make your garden. If you have questions for Marya Miller about plants in the Kern Valley area, e-mail her at maryamil@msn.com.

country that gathers water originating as precipitation and contributes it to a particular stream channel or system of channels, to a lake, reservoir, or other body of water". In short, water runs into a drainage basin and is collected and dispersed by surface topographic features. The Kern River drainage basin is a closed system of streams, lakes, ponds, etc. with the North and South Forks being the only exits from the system. This is dictated by the topography around and within the basin. An excellent example is the Continental Divide of North America. ALL rivers east of the divide flow eastward, and those west flow westward.
