Hometown hero passes from Kernville Michael Batelaan Courier Remembrance
Arts, eats and entertainment will welcome you next weekend at the third annual Kernville Fall Festival. The Festival takes place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Oct. 23 to 25: Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Circle Park features a petting zoo and the gazebo main stage. Visit the vendors along frontage road, and as you enter Riverside Park you will find the pumpkin patch and farmers’ markets. Also at Riverside Park will be quick draw action with the KV Gun Club, Amazing Bounce and the food court. Throughout the weekend there will be wagon rides with pickup and drop-off locations throughout the Festival. This year will include Lawn Mower Races on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the McNally Rodeo Arena in Kernville. There will be food and a beer garden available. On October 6, George Randall 82 of Kernville passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer leaving a big hole in the heart and soul of Kernville the town he loved. Randall fell in love with Kernville nineteen years ago after a successful career in the steel business in Las Vegas. The Randall's built a home on the Kern River that they have enjoyed entertained and hosted countless gatherings for friends, family and community. Simply liking to be called George, Randall greeted everyone with a smile and a firm grip of a handshake. He gave an impression that it was also the way he conducted his business. He loved to help when and where he could, a behind the scenes kind of guy, not wanting the credit he definitely deserved. The impact Randall had is reflected in the projects and causes that

pulled at his heart. He was instrumental in improving Cottage Grove and Kern Valley Cemetery grounds. He had a new Kernville directional sign built at Sierra Way and Hwy 178. Where there was not a ball f i e l d Randall had one built in Kernville; the ball field that bears his name. Every year for Randall almost the last 15 years, George and Darlene would convert Circle Park in Kernville into a Christmas village, complete with Santa Claus, toys, music and gifts for underprivileged children. Each year a converted red Cadillac with a lighted sleigh and reindeer nick-named the ‘Santalac’ along with a line of antique cars parades through town to
collect those toys. George loved Kernville and took on community projects with the same tenacity and drive that made him successful, raising the bar when it came to the look, doing business and the visitor experience of Kernville. A term coined as the remodeling of Kernville; the Randalls having owned the Whispering Pines Lodge, Kernville Inn, Whiskey Flat Antiques, McDowall's Restaurant and Gift Shoppe (now That's Italian) and the former El Sombrero (the Kern River Brewing Company) buildings at one time. Randall exceeded in everything he did and left a positive imprint on the lives of everyone that he came in contact with including the Kern River Courier start up in 2004. When on the street Randall approached then
owner/publishers Dolly Ogawa and Allyn Amsk and asked to become the first and only lifetime subscriber. Puzzled by the request and not yet having a single subscriber, George made up and contributed that amount. In 2011 the TV show "Hometowns and Heroes" featured Kernville and the Randalls and they were recognized by the local community as leaders, contributors, and role models for the Kern Valley. On this show the Randalls spoke from their Kernville home, and Congressman Kevin McCarthy and then County Supervisor Jon McQuiston made appearances to join in a tribute to the commitment and goodwill that both gave to the community. A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Faith Community Church 20 W, Panorama Drive in Wofford Heights. For more about the life and family of George Randall, see page 4.

Corps to host public Dam Modifacation meetings The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District will host a series of informational meetings Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 19 to 21 to discuss the latest status of the Isabella Lake Dam Safety Modification Project. The meetings will provide a brief project update as well as open discussion on the upcoming relocation of U.S. Forest Service administrative and recreation facilities, including an interim visitor center, in order to construct necessary upgrades at Isabella Lake’s main and auxiliary dams. Discussion of a permanent USFS visitor center, including any proposal for it to be located at the Bob Powers’ Gateway Preserve will be the subject of separate public meetings and will not be addressed or discussed. The public meetings will be held: ■ Monday, Oct.19, at 6 to 7 p.m. at Bakersfield City Council Chambers, 1501 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield. ■ Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodrow Wallace Middle School 3240 Erskine Creek Road, Lake Isabella. ■ Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kernville Elementary School, 13350 Sierra Way, Kernville. A draft supplemental environmental assessment outlining proposed measures to offset impacts to recreation, including the relocation of the USFS Kern River Ranger District fire station and temporary relocation of the Lake Isabella Office, is scheduled to be released for public review in November. Historical Groundbreaking Ceremony The Kern River Valley Historical Society will be breaking ground on the construction of the new museum annex and everyone is invited. The ceremony will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. directly across the street from the museum. Bring your shovel and join other community members for this historic event. Everyone will simultaneously break ground and this most exciting project will officially begin. The Historical Society has been planning the development of the annex for well over a year. The plans are now complete with only some small changes to be made construction will begin. It is the intention of the Society to house the Ardis Walker Collection of books, artwork and artifacts in the new building.
Animal Services 5th annual Adoption Event Kern County Animal Services announces the start of their 5th annual “Howlin’ for Homes,” adoption event which runs from October 1 through 31. The event hopes to encourage the adoption of homeless and neglected animals from each of their three shelters. Kern County Animal Services’ shelter in Lake Isabella will be participating in the promotion. Adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations, a microchip, rabies vaccinations for qualifying pets and a one year dog license for residents living in unincorporated areas of Kern County. Fees are normally $85 for dogs 4 months of age and older; $75 for dogs less than 4 months of age; $50 for female cats and, $40 for male cats. Kern County Sheriff's Advisory:
Carl Woolwine Murder Investigation On Monday, Oct. 12, Sheriff detectives began investigating the missing person report of Carl Woolwine. Woolwine had been reported missing in the Kernville area and was last seen by family members on Saturday, Oct. 10. During the investigation, detectives developed information that Woolwine may have been murdered. As a result of the investigation, detectives were able to identify three suspects and developed probable cause to arrest all three. Bobbie Rhynes 43,was arrested at his home in Southlake for first degree murder. Both Joan Noble 34, and Thomas Ertz 28, of Bakersfield were arrested for first degree murder, accessory and conspiracy. The body of Woolwine was located on Tuesday, Oct. 13, buried in a shallow grave at the Shirley Meadows Ski Resort ve Automoti Completeervice & Repair in Alta Sierra displaying obvious signs S of trauma. October 4, 1933 ~ October 6, 2015 It is with great sadness that the family of George Randall announces that the Angels of Heaven came to take their beloved father and family patriarch home to the Heavenly Father Oct. 6, after a long battle against cancer. Born George Alfred Randall Oct. 4, 1933, to George Henry and Violet Ruth Alice Anderson Randall in Britton, S.D., George exceeded in everything he did and left a positive imprint on the lives of everyone who he came in contact with. In 1952, George joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea, working various duties during the Korean War. During his military service, George earned several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. Following his discharge from the Army in 1954, George enlisted in the Army Reserve Unit. George was proud to have served his Country. George married the love of his life, Darlene Carroll, Dec. 2, 1955. George and Darlene had two children, son, Douglass, born May 6, 1960, followed by the birth of their daughter, Brenda, Jan. 16, 1963. During the mid-1950s, George started his career as a steel worker with Bethlehem Steel Co. in Los Angeles. Over the years, he worked in various positions for Soule Steel, Allison Steel and Triangle Steel. In 1967, George met Ray Kendricks in Las Vegas, and the two men soon formed an alliance that would launch one of the largest construction empires in Las Vegas history with the formation of Steel Engineers Inc. Initially, the two partners struggled with up and down economies, but with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, Las Vegas soon became one of the greatest boom-towns of modern history and Steel Engineers Inc. was in the middle of it fabricating and placing rebar in a majority of the buildings and casinos along the famed Las Vegas Strip. Guided by George’s tenacity, attention to detail and his tremendous integrity, Steel Engineers Inc. soon became a resounding success and at one time, employed 1,000 workers. Steel Engineers Inc. placed the steel in such iconic buildings as the Thomas and Mack Center, MGM Grand, Caesar’s Palace, the Stratosphere, the Mirage and Sahara, as well as the Nevada Test Site. During his years in Las Vegas, George was committed to helping the Las Vegas community grow in many other ways. There were very few causes he said no to. Among them were such organizations as Southern Nevada Youth Athletic Association, Ducks Unlimited and Boys and Girls Club. In 1996, George decided to retire and sold his ownership position in Steel Engineers Inc. He and Darlene moved to Kernville, where they built a home along the majestic Kern River. For the past 19 years, they have enjoyed their home where they have entertained and hosted countless gatherings for friends and family. George loved Kernville and took on community projects with the same tenacity and drive as with his successful steel company. Whatever business or project George became involved with, whether it was the purchase of a motel, restaurant or development of a ball field, George had the “Midas Touch” for improving everything he became involved with. And the community of Kernville was the benefactor. Every year, George and Darlene would convert the small park in the heart of Kernville into a Christmas village, complete with Santa Claus, toys, music and gifts for underprivileged children. George is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Darlene, of Kernville; son, Douglass of Las Vegas; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Pat Beatty of Tehachapi; granddaughter, Jessica Randall of Wyoming; grandsons, Bronson McDowall of Tehachapi, and Duran McDowall of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and brother-in-law, Dean, and his wife, Mary Carroll of Palmdale. George will be sadly missed but remembered by people in both Las Vegas and Kernville as a generous, humble and kind-hearted man. Whether it was his family, friends or acquaintance, George was always there with a smile and an open wallet ready and willing to help. Our family wishes to express how much they loved him and how proud they are of his legacy. Services will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Faith Community Church in Wofford Heights. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Part 2: Last week you heard about how the people, whom God had created as the pinnacle of His creation, followed the devil and defied Him, rejecting His Schlensker leadership and disobeying Him. And this rebellion had made the people, with respect to God, 2 2 2 B 1 (too two to be one) - alienated, separated and alone. But you also heard how this God of mercy and grace immediately promised to remedy the situation on their behalf. (See Genesis 3.) How God executed His plan to keep His promise is a long story … several millennia. We'll try to make the long story somewhat shorter. Before too long (a couple of millennia after Creation) God instituted the Old Covenant (Testament) sacrificial system as a model of what He was going to do eventually (after another millennium and a half). In this sacrificial system perfect, innocent, year-old animals (who did not deserve to die) were slaughtered and sacrificed in order to appease the wrath of this holy God, Who has a zero-tolerance-level for sin, so He would not be required-on account of His righteousness and jealousy-to torch the whole lot of them because of their sinfulness, iniquity and uncleanness. Although these sacrifices only effected a temporary resolution of the people's problem with
sinfulness, since they had to repeated, they were a sneak preview of God's ultimate plan for the redemption of His fallen creatures. He was going to bring about a reunification, a restoration of relationship between Himself and His sinful creatures. (Hebrews 10:10) God was going to make atonement. That's a unique word; it's selfdefining. Its 3 parts, "at," "one," and "ment" spell out what it means: to reestablish unity, to remove barriers, to recover one-ness, to facilitate at-onement! As was modeled by the Old Testament sacrificial system, this atonement was achieved through the sacrifice of a perfect, sinless human being (since human sin demands human sacrifice), Who was "the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29). On the cross, Jesus destroyed all that separates us from God by taking all of that destructive, alienating stuff onto Himself and experiencing God-forsakenness (that is, hell itself) on our behalf, so that we, through faith in Him can experience re-unification with our Creator, restoration of our relationship with God, and experience once more some of the goodness, with which God created the cosmos in the first place. And "good" is, as we presented last week, to bring forth, support and enrich life. That's the new life believers in Jesus enjoy now and forever! My three-part series will conclude next week. Keyesville Gold: Then and Now Dr. Gregg Wilkerson, BLM geologist, will be the guest speaker Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center for the Kern Valley Historical Society. The Keyesville Mining District has recently been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The area was the site of both placer and lode (hard rock) mills. Remnants of those days still exist, including the Keyes 10-Stamp Mill, the Pearl Harbor Drive arrastra, the Pearl Harbor Drive hydraulic pit, and hundreds of smaller mines and prospects. The Bureau of Land Management is currently working on an Activity Plan that will lay out ground rules for future prospecting and development of these gold resources.
Interested in a valley skate park? The Offices of 1st District Supervisor Mick Gleason and Kern County Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a public meeting on Friday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lake Isabella Senior/Veterans Center on Lake Isabella Blvd., Room 1. All Kern River Valley residents interested in a skate park are invited to attend. Kern County Parks Director, Bob Lerude will be briefing the attendees on what the County has been able to accomplish for this effort to date. They will also be providing information on how the County can support this effort in the future. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Southpaw” (R) - Jake Gyllenhaal plays a boxer who must endure sparring round after round with almost every boxing-movie trope. Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) grew up an orphan, married the perfect woman, had a baby, became a champion and then lost everything. To save his daughter (Oona Laurence) from being a ward of the state, Billy has to get a new manager (Forrest Whitaker) and get back in the ring. Gyllenhaal and Whitaker have a fine dynamic, but nothing elevates the movie above the predictability hanging all over it. “Pixels” (PG-13) - Adam Sandler slouches his way through more haphazard hijinks in this big-budget nostalgic action-comedy. Sandler plays a schlubby guy still trying to get over a video-game tournament he lost in his childhood. He’s also friends with the president, who is played by Kevin James (keep suspending that disbelief, cause the aliens haven’t even landed yet). Shrugging Sandler must team up with others (Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan) to defeat an invading force of aliens that have taken the form of ’80s arcade game characters. It’s not just the noise and flashing lights that make arcade games so fun and memorable. A movie so deeply inspired by arcades might have gotten that lesson and written a script to prove it. Grownups may get tickles of

Simon and Robyn (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) are a lovely young couple who recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. A chance encounter puts them in touch with Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon’s high school -- “Gordo the weirdo” they called him. Soon, Gordo’s being very generous with gifts, even dropping by their house unannounced in the middle of the day. Seems nice ... but something is way off. Written and directed by Edgerton, this thriller hits the right notes without overplaying any of them. The tension in the marriage, and the tension over what Simon could be hiding, hang with you. Bodfish Bob Bodfish Bob’s Black Bean and Pumpkin Chili 2 T olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium yellow pepper, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 cans ( 15 oz each) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 can ( 15 oz.) solid-pack pumpkin 1 can ( 14 12/ oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained 3 cups chicken broth 1 1/2 cups cubed cooked turkey 2 tsp dried parsley flakes 2 tsp chili powder 1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano 1/2 tsp salt Cubed avocado and sliced green onion In a large skillet, heat oil over medium - high heat. Add onion, pepper and garlic. Cook and stir until tender. Transfer to 5-quart slow cooker; stir in remaining ingredients. Cook, covered on low 4 to 5 hours. Top with
Bodfish Bob’s Pumpkin Pancakes 2 cups biscuit mix 2 T brown sugar 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp allspice 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk 1/2 cups solid pack pumpkin 2 T vegetable oil 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla Combine biscuit mix, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice and milk. Mix well. Pour in the pumpkin. Mix in the oil, eggs and vanilla. Place oil in pan and cook until golden brown. Bodfish Bob’s Pumpkin Fudge 2 T butter 2 1/2 cups white sugar 2/3 cups evaporated milk 6 oz. white chocolate chips 7 oz. marshmallow cream 3/4 cup canned pumpkin 1 tsp each cinnamon and vanilla Prepare a 9 x 9-inch pan with foil. Heat milk and sugar over medium heat. Bring to a boil while stirring with a wooden spoon. Mix in pumpkin, cinnamon and bring to a boil again. Stir in marshmallow cream and butter. Bring to a rolling boil (until you can’t stir it down). Cook for 18 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, add the white chocolate and vanilla. Stir until creamy. Then pour it into the pan and allow to cool until hard.

Lightning results in Sierra fires Cindy Thill, USFS Courier Release The Sequoia National Forest and a large portion of the Southern Sierras experienced thunderstorm activity this past weekend. This activity ignited several fires across the Sequoia National Forest and National Monument. According to Forest Service Fire Management officials, lightning sparked two fires within the Kern River Ranger District. Both Kern County Fire and Forest Service Engines No. 42 and No. 3 responded. On Sunday, Oct. 4, the Alta Fire was reported by a resident in the area, at approximately 4 p.m. below the community of Alta Sierra, a few hundred
yards off Old State Road. Fire fighters were able to keep that fire to a 20x20foot area, which included two lightning struck snags (trees). The Summit Fire was also discovered on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 6:30 p.m., on Greenhorn Summit, a couple hundred yards from the top of the Unal Trail. The fire involved a 40-inch diameter tree with a 10 x 10-foot ground fire. Battalion Chief, Sanders said, “Both fires were limited in growth due to heavy precipitation earlier in the day and a quick response by local fire resources.” For further information, contact the Kernville Ranger Station at 760-3763781, or the Lake Isabella Ranger Station at 760-379-5646.

Kern River Courier Legal Notices Gerald Nobuo Fujii
July 11, 1943 to September 10, 2015 Gerald “Jerry” Nobuo Fujii was born in Rohwer Relocation Center, Arkansas, the only son of Harry Shigeru Fujii and Tomiko (Dobashi) Fujii. He lived in Arkansas for a short time but spent most of his early years in Los Angeles, CA. Jerry attended Occidental College, Notre Dame, and CSU Humboldt, where he completed degrees in physics and fisheries biology. He then taught at Chatsworth High School for 20 years. In L.A., Jerry and his first wife, Nancy, had two children, Erin and Jeff. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Nevada City, CA, where Jerry taught for nearly 20 years at Nevada Union High School. He inspired many students by emphasizing the elegance and fun of physics and science. He spent his free time fly fishing and skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, perhaps the real reason for moving to Northern California. Later in life, Jerry met Christy, a loving partner with whom he shared his passions for fish, food, wine and the outdoors. When he retired from teaching, he moved to Kernville to share a life with her and continue his adventures. In retirement, he happily contributed many volunteer hours to golden trout research and restoration. Fly fishing was Jerry’s defining lifelong passion. He ventured on extreme hikes and back country trips in search of good fishing. Friends who accompanied him usually returned with hair-raising tales of an adventure or “shortcut” that was routine for Jerry. He was fortunate to travel the world in pursuit of his favorite sport and there were few, if any, locations that he wanted to see that he did not experience. His fishing skill earned him the respect of many fishermen, though Jerry would probably call his own ability “adequate.” Jerry passed away during his second encounter with lymphoma. Prior to his passing, he eagerly anticipated teaching his grandchildren --Charlie, Sylvia, and Morgan -- about “a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.” (Norman Maclean) Donations in Jerry’s honor may be made to his favorite charity, The Carter Center. Watch hold-ups and gunfights, horse shoeing, horse doctoring and turn of the century saw mill demonstrations. There will be cowboy cooking, a Whiskey Flat saloon, Old West Mercantile Shoppe and more. Story tellers Mike Woodward, Dave “Laughing Horse” Robinson and Nathan Eddy will tell stories about miners, cowboys and outlaws. The encampments close at
7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Spooky time and campfire 6 to 7:30, Saturday night. The Fall Festival photo scavenger hunt is back! Participants can scavenge alone or as a team. Family fun contests will happen throughout the weekend like the pumpkin walk, pie eating, apple bobbing, pony dash, pumpkin relay and much more! Bring your decorated pumpkins to place around the gazebo for judging. This year we celebrate the second annual Lil’ Miss Corn Stalk Pageant open to our local girls ages 4 to 10. This pageant will take place on Sunday
starting at 11 a.m. The actors for the haunted maze include none other than our local high school drama club. There will be live music Friday and Saturday nights on the newly finished gazebo in Circle Park All the festival activities take place right in downtown Kernville’s Circle Park, Riverside Park and frontage roads with the Lawn Mower Races and Hunted Encampment in the area of the Kernville Rodeo grounds. Admission to the festival is free except special private food and vendor attractions.
