When an opportunity presents itself, you make lemonade. Mark Platt and his sister Karley Davis have been doing a lemonade stand to make money to take a trip to Europe with a program titled People to People. They are trying to see the world, one cup at a time. Platt traveled to Italy two years ago with the group spending 19 days and now would like to go to the Celtic countries of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales with his sister.

For 50 years, People to People Ambassador Programs has taken students-from 5th graders to college-on life-changing, educational adventures.
People to People take students to 40 countries and all seven continents. The nations of the world have never been more interconnected. Students can earn academic credit and gain an academic edge by turning their People to People adventure into high school or college credit. It is not an ordinary student trip, but a whole new way to

tion, mining, forest management, roads, residential construction, fire management and use of crop protection products. The yellow-billed cuckoo was once found in abundance in riparian forests of willow and cottonwood throughout the west, where it fed on insects. But a century and a half of damming, land development and water diversions have made riparian forests one of the West's most-endangered habitats, and the cuckoo has declined in numbers dramatically. Among the tracts of private property proposed for designation as Critical Habitat for the cuckoo are 2,862 acres on the south fork of the Kern River.

As I get older and long in the tooth, I've noticed that I find myself holding lots of negative thoughts. I don't like this and I don't like that and what are those politicians doing now, things like that. Then I got to thinking, life is full of good things, far more than the negative ones. But age seems to bring on attention to the negative. So I thought today I'd cancel those out and write a column about the good things that I have enjoyed over the years. Things I like to eat, things I like to do, and a host of other things that come to mind. The following are not in order they are just random thoughts about the good things I've encountered. Limited space allows me to only mention a few. I like things like feeling sand between my toes as I walk along the beach, fishing in the ocean, and catching surf perch. I like the fun of buying and driving a new car and hiking from Tehachapi to Mt. Whitney with hiking friends. I like the taste of apple pie and vanilla ice cream. I enjoy getting in the car and using a map to drive on the lesser traveled roads or taking my foot that walked in the Pacific Ocean across the United States and placing it in the Atlantic Ocean. I loved my years as a radar man in the Submarine Service. And I liked fishing in Lake Isabella from shore and catching as
many weeds as I did fish. I enjoy reading and listening to books on CD's. Here are some more: Digging worms. The smell of Pine trees while hiking in the Sierra's. Working on and spending time at our cabin in Greenhorn. Learning to Scuba Dive in a Fresno lake called Avacado. Racing outboards. Getting my shoes shined whenever I got a haircut (before tennis shoes). Writing this column. Being a guide at our local Museum. Making a ringer while playing horseshoes. Picking cherries in an orchard. Teaching my son, two daughters, five grand-children and one great grand-daughter how to fish (there are still four more to go). Using power tools that fit the job. Riding a Honda Gold Wing with my wife as passenger. Flying radio controlled aircraft. Sitting on my front porch and enjoying the view of Lake Isabella. Using my computer and going into Google, the world at my fingertips. Being with friends. Toastmasters. Rotary and Lions Club. Meeting my wife for the first time. Marriage and watching our kids grow. Sports, graduations and college. As I wrote this I realized that the good times far exceeded any bad times that might have come along. I would challenge those of you who read this to the end to take some time and think about 'your' good times and the pleasure that comes from remembering them. National Parks lift fire restrictions
Courier
Alexis Brooks, National Park Service Courier Release
The weather is starting to cool off and crappie are starting to move into the shallows. As usual, the bass are following. Above is a picture of a seven pound male caught from the French Gulch Marina. The crappie are running from 1/2 to 3/4 pound and the bass are running up to 7 lbs. Trout are running deep and not many are being caught. Bluegill are too small to keep. But, if you go for them, remember to hook the mealworm one time only in the center. They will move more slowly and attract the fish. If you like catfish, use kosher hot dogs. I know you think I am kidding, "I'm not."Remember to check out your Fish and Wildlife book for limits. Good luck.
Effective Friday, October 3, 2014, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks are lifting fire restrictions inside the parks. Recent rain and shorter and cooler days have reduced fire danger. Wood and charcoal fires are now permitted within designated fire rings in all Foothills Campgrounds of Sequoia National Park. Campfires are also now permitted in Wilderness areas below 6,000 feet in elevation. Year-round fire restrictions may still apply to specific sites in the wilderness. Charcoal grills may also now be used in the Hospital Rock and Ash Mountain Picnic Areas, and smoking is permitted below 6,000 feet. Even with restrictions lifted, visitors must still follow the parks' yearround regulations concerning fire. In
the Wilderness: ■ Keep campfires small, in a safe area, and away from overhanging limbs. ■ Use existing campfire rings -do not build new rings in the wilderness. ■ Extinguish fires at least ½ hour before leaving camp; add water and stir the ashes. ■ If you are backpacking, you are responsible for knowing the fire regulations where you travel. Check with the wilderness office about your destination. Fires are prohibited in some areas of the Wilderness due to scarcity of wood and resource concerns. Additionally, all visitors must: ■ Use the designated campfire ring in all campgrounds. o Gather only dead and down wood; do not cut limbs from trees. ■ Extinguish cigarettes and properly dispose of the filter.
■ Fishing reports and planting schedules are updated directly from area reporting sport fishermen, sporting goods stores, local marinas and CDFW Hatchery staff. ■ All fish plants are subject to change depending on road, water, weather and operational conditions. ■ Conditions permitting, the waters listed to be restocked with catchablesize fish from CDFW hatchery schedules. ■ More specific dates and locations are not reported to avoid focusing excess fishing activity immediately after a plant.

Audiences feel the love of music Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Begin Again” (R) -- This is one of those enchanting movies where the music almost eclipses the entire story. Greta (Keira Knightley) is a songwriter and sometimessinger who's hit a low point, breathing her feelings into a microphone in a stale little lounge in New York City. Her voice has a deep effect on Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced music producer who's hit an even lower low. Dan convinces Greta to take a chance and produce a record with him, shunning studios and making music in the streets. This is the follow-up feature from John Carney, the director of the wildly successful, low-budget musicians-in-love movie "Once." Carney -- a musician himself -- knows how to make audiences feel that love of music. Funny thing is, he got better dramatic performances in "Once," when his actors were musicians instead of movie stars.. “Deliver Us from Evil” (R) -Sick of exorcism movies yet? How about a crime-solving exorcist who works for the NYPD?! Fortunately, there's a 2001 memoir by a real-life cop detailing his "experiences" fighting the supernatural. Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) has great cop-intuition, a smart-mouth partner (Joel McHale) and a bone to pick with the Man Upstairs. He meets up with a toocool-for-Sunday-school renegade priest (Edgar Ramirez) who helps

Sarchie realize that he should be doing the Lord's work. Despite combining the crime drama and supernatural thriller genres, the action feels by-the-numbers. The most the movie has to offer is a climactic exorcism and a lot of sudden noises to try to fry your nerves. What's missing is the right psychological trickery to make all of that spookiness into real nightmare fuel.. “Life of Crime” (R) -- Frank Dawson (Tim Robbins) has a lot of money, a gorgeous wife (Jennifer Aniston) and a team of bumbling career-criminals plotting to kidnap her for a huge ransom. The masterminds didn't realize one important detail: Frank is an amoral slob who can save a lot of money if his wife disappears, since he wants to get rid of her and go full-time with his enthusiastic mistress in South Beach. It's an uncomfortable realization for the kidnappers and the wife, really. This crime-comedy unfolds into a full-on confusing caper. The chuckles are worth the rental fee.

Antique hat pins on display at museum The Kern Valley Museum is delighted to have Darlene Wolowiec's beautiful collection of antique hat pins on display. Darlene started collecting the original ladies accessory more than 40 years ago. What started as a love for something both useful and beautiful has become a stunning collection of yesteryear's memories. Darlene's prize collection will be at the museum through October 31st. Take a step back in time and marvel at this wonderful collection. The Museum is located next to the Post Office in Kernville and is open Thursday through Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is always free and now you can "like" us on Facebook at Kern Valley Museum. For more information contact the "all volunteer staff" at 760-376-6683.

App Helps Cerro Coso students succeed Inspired by its strategic goal to increase student success, Cerro Coso Community College launched a free mobile application that gives students the information, tips and tricks they need to succeed. GradGuru guides and motivates students to take action and engage in behaviors that have been proven to lead to higher and faster completion rates. The free app helps students keep track of campus-specific deadlines, better understand the milestones they need to hit; learn what behaviors lead to academic success; tap existing student support and financial aid resources; and share these lessons with one another. Students are busy with work and family. And navigating community college can be complicated, especially for the 40 percent of students who are the first in their families to go to college. GradGuru will fill a big part of the information gap, making it easier for students to keep track of deadlines, learn tips and tricks to stay in school, and finish faster.

It is easier to get forgiveness than permission.
ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Caution dominates the Sheep's monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week's end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it's what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It's not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You'll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you'd expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you're so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It's a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it.
