Every September, local FFA members head down to Bakersfield to compete in the Kern County Fair. This is the culmination of many months of hard work and preparation. “We have planning meetings as early as February for fair projects,” said FFA advisor, Emily Keverline. “The majority of our members get their projects in May and June, but some students who own breeding projects or market beef care for and train animals year round.” Kern Valley FFA has had a long tradition of high numbers of participants at the fair and this year is no exception. During the 10 days of the Fair, 50 large animals (cattle, swine, sheep and goats) will be exhibit-

Graham Owner’s car club visiting Valley The California Golden State Graham Owner’s Club is coming to our valley and the Kern River Valley Historical Society is proud to be their host. So what is this club about and what connection does the Historical Society have with them? The KRV Museum has a 1925 Graham Brothers’ stake bed truck parked in our Museum. You’ve seen it in the Christmas Parades, the Whiskey Flat parades, and driven around Kernville, sometimes parked at Circle Park with signs on it. There are owners of some of these beautiful, old Graham vehicles from all over the world. They formed a car club called the Graham Owners International Club. Today there are more than 450 members worldwide. The club is divided into regions and states. The California Golden State Graham Owners is one of the largest groups with more than 60 members. They will be our guests from Sunday, Oct. 4 through Wednesday, Oct. 7 for their Fall State Meet and Banquet. For many of the group, this will be their first visit to our area. So let’s welcome them. If you see them drive by in one of their old Graham vehicles, wave at them. If you see them, walking around town, say hello. They are going to be here staying at our motels and RV parks, eating at our restaurants and visiting our sites. By the way, if you own an old Graham vehicle (car, truck, tractor or rototiller) and would like to learn more about this state-wide organization, call 760-379-1123.

Camp Crawdad Vintage Camper Gathering Vintage campers unite in conjunction with the “Kickin’ Back in Kernville” hot rod show. They will gather and camp at the Kernville Airport campground Oct. 9, 10 and 11. This is a gathering of vintage trailer folks who would like to camp, fish, explore, see the car show, enjoy music, food and the great outdoors and who would like to show off their trailers to the public on swap meet day, Sunday, Oct. 10. For more information call 661-203-5071.

The Tehachapi Apple Festival Returns The festival takes place in downtown Tehachapi, Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. David Brust, the event organizer, said, “This year, besides the pie baking contest, live music, apple pie eating contest and huge inflatable playground, we are adding more vendors and a petting zoo.” Some of the things that you can expect are more apple-related items, including apple cider, apple drinks, more farmers with apples -- each vendor with something “apple-y.” The event is free to the public and features some great live music, a fun pie eating contest, pie baking contest, a modern take on apple bobbing, apple drop and so much more. “Tehachapi Festivals was created to help local charities put on great events and promote the Tehachapi area to tourists and locals,” Brust said. In the case of The Apple Festival, non-profits including Boy Scout Troop 3, The Tehachapi Tourism Commission, Lions Club, Rotary Club of Tehachapi, Make-aWish of Central California and Kiwanis will all benefit from participation. Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist As I watched the lunar eclipse the other night, I was awed at the sight. Some longago-learned (and taught, since I used to be a science teacher) Schlensker astronomical principles were coming back to my mind. I was remembering that a lunar eclipse can only happen during the time of a full moon, since the eclipse is the earth’s shadow on the moon, so the sun, earth and moon have to be lined up with the earth in the middle. And that’s just when a full moon occurs. Of course, we don’t have an eclipse every full moon, because the alignment of the three celestial bodies is only close to collinear when there’s not an eclipse during a full moon. And then there’s the shape of the light and dark areas of the moon, which are distinctly different between the regular phases of the moon and a time of eclipse. During the regular phases the ends of the border between the light and dark areas of the moon’s face are along a nearly vertical line across the center of the moon. However, the shadow last night had a horizontal orientation, quite different from those of the regular moon phases. Men like Galileo, Copernicus,

and more ancient astronomers like Eratosthenes, figured out relative positions of the sun, moon and earth, by observing heavenly phenomena. Etatosthenes used earth-sun observations along with a comparatively miniscule surface measurement to calculate the circumference of the earth in the 2nd century before Christ. These were clever guys. And they were of a mind that because an all-wise God created an orderly universe and told his creatures to manage and “subdue” the earth (Genesis 1:28), men were encouraged to observe, calculate, postulate, theorize and test ideas in order to benefit mankind and maximize the enjoyment and benefit, which God built into His created system. I am thankful for the evidence all around us that a loving God, Who created everything for the benefit and enjoyment of His human creatures, is still willing that all the residents of this planet will acknowledge Him as their God. After all, He made the sacrificial gesture of becoming human, Himself, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, to make atonement for all the abuses, misuses, usurpations and desecrations of His creation. And He graciously invites every person on earth to turn to Him in trust for the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life with Him in His everlasting mansions. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

It’s a fun ride for the kids Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Tomorrowland” (PG) - What we once knew as “the part of Disney World that has Space Mountain” is now a feature-length futuristic adventure starring George Clooney. Casey (Brittany Robertson), a plucky, science-oriented teen, finds a pin that takes her to a world of futuristic fancy. She meets up with a former boy-genius (Clooney) in the hopes that they can find their way back to Tomorrowland, where things are shiny, science is awesome, and mankind lives in harmony with the planet. The film is really, really fixed on this idea that science and society in general were better and more hopeful some decades ago, and that we need that old-time optimism once again if we’re going to make it through the various social and environmental problems of today. If you can stomach the preaching, it’s a fun ride for the kids, and a lot less expensive than a trip to Space Mountain. “San Andreas” (PG-13) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson brings a helicopter to an earthquake fight in this mega-disaster thriller. Ray Gaines (Johnson) is a rescue guy who needs to patch things up with his exwife so they can save their daughter from a super earthquake that’s rearranging California. Not much else to see or hear over the roaring special effects. It’s a big, loud spectacle that does-

n’t bring much originality to the table. The real objective here is getting The Rock in a vehicle and watching it go. Some viewers may need to chug large quantities of soda or tea, as the boom and blunder is hard to appreciate without a raging sugarrush. It’s fun, but not worth the consequences. “Dope” (R) - Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is on his way to college from a rough neighborhood in California. He’s smart, funny and a proud geek who knows his hip-hop trivia. Just when he’s got his shot at being really cool, a series of events leaves Malcolm with a large amount of drugs and orders to sell it -- or else! This rare summer comedy was hailed across the film festivals for its originality, sharp wit, slick direction and hyper-awareness. With this one role, Moore has eyes on him for a followup performance. Pick this one up for a different perspective on what the kids are up to these days. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dave Says

Health Insurance Matters

Money and behavior

Medicare 2016 worries

Dave Ramsey Courier Columnist Dear Dave, Why do you say that personal finance is 80 percent behavior? I thought money was more about math and keeping track of things?

Ramsey

- Gerald Dear Gerald, Keeping your checkbook balanced and things like that are an important part of what I teach. However, behavior plays an even bigger role for several reasons. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide all day. That stuff’s easy. But until you learn to control your behavior, stick to a budget and spend less than you make, you’re always going to have problems with money. One of the keys to being a success in personal finance is realizing work comes before play. This is a behavior issue. Let’s say your car needs new brakes. You know this, and you know you have a limited amount of cash, but you still walk into a store and buy a big, fancy television instead. That is not mature behavior. As long as you behave that way, your money will always slide right out of your hands. And this means you’ll never have enough for important things like saving, investing and giving. -Dave Dear Dave, Do you recommend that people

continue tithing and giving while getting out of debt? - Sara Dear Sarah, If you’re tithing, that would refer to you being a Christian or of the Jewish faith. To the best of my knowledge, those are the only two religions where tithing is taught as a part of the faith. The word literally means “a tenth,” as in a tenth of your income. If you are an evangelical Christian, what does Scripture say? It says to take the tithe off the top before you do anything else. You keep doing it always, not from a legalistic perspective, but because it’s part of God’s instructions on the best way to live. It gives you a baseline for giving and generosity. Then, get yourself and your household cleaned up and in good financial shape before engaging in other acts of giving, which are called offerings. This is the normal process that Scripture outlines. But remember, God is crazy about you and loves you very much. When you give, it’s the act of being unselfish and putting others first. -Dave Dave Ramsey is America's trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times bestselling books. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Dave's latest project, EveryDollar, provides a free online budget tool. Volunteers needed to transport cancer patients An estimated 1.6 million California residents will learn that they have cancer this year. The American Cancer Society provides transportation to and from treatment facilities to help people with cancer receive the critical care they need; however, getting to their scheduled treatment may be a challenge. “One cancer patient requiring radiation therapy could need anywhere from 20 to 30 trips to treatment in six weeks,” said Donna Gavello, program manager. “A patient receiving chemotherapy might report for treatment weekly for up to a year. In many cases, a patient is driven to hospitals or clinics by relatives or friends, but even these patients must occasionally seek alternative transportation. That’s where the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program comes in. “The free program provides patients rides to and from their cancer treatment. To ensure that all patients have transportation when they need it, the Society is looking for volunteer drivers in the rural areas. “Road To Recovery volunteers arrange their own schedules, with some volunteering as little as one afternoon a month and others driving patients as often as twice a week.” For information about the Road To Recovery program and other Society programs and services, call 1-800-227-2345, or visit cancer.org.

Phone scam alert The Kern County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn Kern County residents of a possible phone scam. Recently, county residents have reported receiving telephone calls from callers identifying themselves as employees of Kern County. The callers are offering homeowners energy efficiency inspections of their homes. On one occasion, the caller asked a homeowner if they could come out to the persons home. The calls appear on caller ID as if they originate from a Kern County phone line, 661-836-8312; however Kern County does not have any such phone line. One of the calls received was a robocall from a business which identified itself as Sustainable Energy. A separate call originated from a person who called a county resident offering an energy inspection. Both calls came in from the same phone number. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind county residents to be guarded when receiving calls from unknown callers. Never provide an unknown caller personal information over the phone, and never allow a person you don’t know into your home. Report any suspicious calls or incidents you believe may involve fraudulent activity. To report suspicious or possibly fraudulent activity call the Sheriff’s Office at 661-861-3110.

Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist I am concerned for people I do not even know. The situation is this. Each year, typically in the late summer and early fall, Thal insurance agents who work in the Medicare arena must recertify with each insurance company they represent. Much of the curriculum is very repetitive, as all the companies are required by government regulation to cover the same basics. In addition to this, there is the actual product they plan to offer for the new year. That’s where my worry begins. While the companies need to train the agents in the products and more importantly, changes, it is against the law to discuss the benefits with the public until October 1. This week, my current clients are receiving letters from me requesting a list of their current medications. We will research this personalized list to determine if their current prescription drug plan will be the best for the coming year. What I have seen so far is that the monthly premium for plans will have a slight increase. The actual amounts are held secret until October. The scare is the benefits are changing. I am suspect that with the increase in the retail cost of prescriptions and the insurance companies trying to keep the monthly premium increase to a minimum, much of the cost will be

>>>

reflected as increases at the pharmacy counter. So far, I have seen several companies placing generic drugs into all the pricing tiers. So, they won’t all be so cheap anymore. Many of the plans have added a fifth pricing tier, and several plans have gone from a copay (you have a fixed dollar) to coinsurance (you pay a percentage) of the retail price. CMS, the government agency that runs Medicare has increased the deductible maximum to $350 before benefits are paid. There will still be some plans that waive the deductible. With the retail prices increasing on many drugs, there will be more out of pocket on the deductible plans, and of course, more people will hit the coverage gap (aka “Donut Hole”) sooner. While much of the certification training is done online, several of the companies have live trainings to augment the internet sessions. Here I get scared again. One company that had unlimited free transportation for their HMO clients will now limit the trips. I do have a trip for couples to help on those doctor visits to Bakersfield. Their drug benefit will also change, and I really feel for some folks who take insulin. What was low cost or free will now be a tier 4. Again, no prices available until October. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) Thal is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. He may be reached at 760-376-2100, harrythal@aol.com or harrythal. com.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You might feel that you need to get involved in a matter concerning a friend or relative. But while the issues appear to be

cut and dried, they might not be. Get more facts before you act. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) A suggestion about a policy change could create heated reactions. Keep your mind open and resist joining in with naysayers unless they can show a real basis for their position. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) While potential career changes warrant your interest, don’t ignore current job responsibilities. A personal relationship also can benefit from more of your attention. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Don’t guess at what the facts might be if you hope to make the best decision possible. The wise course is to ask direct questions and act on the answers you get. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Your efforts involving that pesky problem should soon show positive signs of being resolved. This would allow you to shift some of your focus in another direction. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) While you enjoy well-deserved praise for getting a difficult job done, there’s no time to relax. A new challenge looms. Expect more support from a once-strong critic. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) You might still have explaining to do about your decision, but support grows as you continue to make your case. You also might want to start making plans for the upcoming holidays.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $260,023.45. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. Fun on wheels The Blue Aljoa (top left), and Sister on the Fly 911 (bottom right) were just two of the vintage trailers at the Sisters on the Fly weekend camp out up river.

Sisters, Continued from page 1 glass of wine. That was too much fun to keep to themselves so the next trip they invited some girlfriends. Along the way they decided it would be much more fun to outfit some vintage trailers and drag them down the road with them. How good it is to fall into your own feather bed at the end of a long day of fishing and wake to the smell of coffee right outside your door in the morning!

The trailers take on personalities of their own, and that of their owners. They are proudly, and some fantastically, decorated with kitschy themes and love. Not all Sisters elect to have trailers. Some prefer tents, bed and breakfast suites, pickup truck beds, and any other place you can roll out a sleeping bag. It's really a sight to see them rolling down the highway. There are members all over the United States, some in Canada, and England, and even in Australia. Their members

range in age from 21 to 94, with most being in between. It has been their distinct pleasure to watch women catch their first fish, tow their trailer alone for the first time and back it into its campsite, cook their first Dutch oven meal, and paddle their first kayak. The group's mission is, "Offering empowerment and sisterhood through exceptional outdoor adventures." Like the swallows of San Juan Capistrano they will be returning next year.
